I'm 37 and I'm a 3rd year. I thought I was old. But I fit right in. I look young and stay in shape. It's only late if you want it to.

I am 50 and I will be starting my second year of medical school in August. I made it through the first year but it was an ABSOLUTE grind! If you are over 40 and considering a career as a physician, weigh the pros and cons. Is it worth it? In my opinion, it is but there is a sacrifice and a lot of HARD work involved.

    • @andre1987eph

Embrace the grind buddy and do NOT under any circumstance drop out. I dropped out in 1994. You never get over it.
Also hopefully you're attend a state school with lower tuition. The issue is the student loans.

Thank you doctor. This is thr first time I came across you videos and I'm so glad that I did. I've wanted to be a doctor since childhood. I'm now 47 and still want to pursue my dream, but felt discouraged due to my age. Greatly appreciate your positive words and encouragement!!

@C B what makes it harder financially in your 30s vs your 20s? Wouldn't they all be earning back the money eventually anyway?

This was helpful. It is also helpful to hear all the comments from others who are also starting on their dream later in life. I am a 40 year old combat medic veteran who is starting back to school.
My first attempt at my academic career reflects the difficulties I was experiencing at that time, housing insecurity and undiagnosed ADHD and PTSD. As my grades for this attempt were over 2 decades ago, how heavily will potential med schools weigh them? Is there anything I can do to have them weighed less?

I'm wanting to take classes and be eligible for medical school at 45 or 46. My concern is that I did FP that I would have financial burden all the time practicing as being in my 50s as a starting Doctor..

  • @andre1987eph

I washed out of a top med school in 90s because of immaturity when I was 26. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE QUIT MED SCHOOL.
Im all for a mature 49 year old going to med school. That can give him a good 10 to 15 years to practice medicine.
The issue is the student loans however.

Probably bad advice. The desire to be a physician should be balanced against a person's financial and other personal circumstances. For some older people, the decision may be a good one. For many others, pursuing medical school would be unwise given their age and personal circumstances. In my opinion, wisdom should guide this decision.
