i recently got back into reading middle grade by reading a bunch of LGBT themed books. I wanted to capture that feeling of a kid being accepted and learning who they are when i didnt have that as a kid bc i hadnt figured myself out yet. its funny bc my range of reading anymore goes from MG to adult, its YA that has bored me with its lack of diversity in themes and overall story content. people who drag middle grade also dont put into perspective that some people are also second language learners and that "simple" language is great to get them into the wonders of reading in another language. lets be honest books marketed for adult language learners are nnot the most diverse in terms of theme or interesting
I got back into reading middle grade as a means of knowing the territory as a middle grade teacher with a focus on literacy, and what struck me about it was like... there's a level of sophistication to all those books that you can really _only_ grasp as an adult, and especially an adult with an understanding of creative writing. The subtle, wry comedy of How to Train Your Dragon's prose, the eclectic and wildly creative small-scale worldbuilding of Wishtree, the disarmingly funny and honest POV narration of The Watsons Go to Birmingham's child protagonist... kids might absorb some of this stuff, but the full impact necessarily needs more brain matter and life experience. I'm not able to teach anymore, but I still think it's important as an adult to know that territory, because we're all responsible for bringing up the generations that come after us, even if we're not parents or teachers- to say nothing of the personal value these books can bring to the individual. This is the first video of yours Recommended tossed my way, I'll be interested to check out more! I'd like to get back into reading consistently and middle grade is reliably manageable LOL
What a wonderful video! I'm revisiting middle grade and excited to stumble upon new instant classics. As an adult and a mother it is so nice to step into the magic again! Thank you for your insight!! 💕
I know this is an older video but it popped up and I honestly think middle grade may be my go to after a harder reading book like my dark Vanessa etc as I think it’s more magical xx
huh that's pretty interesting. tbh I didn't get what MG even mean, since english is not my first language and also in middle grade I've read Jack London and James Fenimore Cooper with some hard sci-fi
Nowadays what we call "readability" is big, meaning that books should be easy to read. The sweet spot is around twelve year old vocabulary level and I think this is why middle grade is going through a renaissance right now. We don't want big, flowery, super impressive vocab in books. We want something simple, voicy and that will move us. Middle grade has always been doing that. That's why it's great.
I’m so happy to have stumbled upon your channel! I’ve been wanting to get into middle grade books for so long but was worried that being 24 made me too old. Watching your videos immediately changed my mind and I have since spent what is probably far too much time looking at middle grade books in my local Waterstones (and spending too much money on them!). Thank you for making this video!
So happy I came across this video. I am a fervent tracker of my reading data and noticed middle grade books I’ve read tend to track higher averages in my ratings. There’s something special about being able to read a book easily enough for the emotion to keep up with the reading, if that makes any sense. Only two books I’ve read this year have made me tear up and both were middle grade. The Thing about Jellyfish and the Julian Chapter from the Wonder Stories. Thank you for this video!
CS Lewis said “When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” and I think that pretty well says it!
I'm a little late but I really want to comment, so I'm doin' it. I absolutely agree with everything you're saying here, it's the way I see life too. We should always keep a part of childhood in us, the wonder, the whimsy, the feeling that anything is possible (whilst still being realistic but that goes without saying). The world is harsh, so we might a well enjoy beautiful and magical stories. I'm a big defender of the fact that people should read whatever they want and that literature aimed at younger people is not inferior (I even did a school project on that !). "The language is easier to read but that doesn't mean that the words on a page don't mean as much" ABSOLUTELY, yes, 100%.
That was such a great talk... I've been following you channel for a few months now and I feel your comments so much. I live in South America and here the sole love of reading is a misconcieved notion, let alone reading "children's books". Thanks for your words, such an inspiration for helping others reach the true meaning of diving in the world of books! Cheers form overseas !
Thank you so much Katy! There really is so much joy to find in them and they make me feel safe and comforted too, couldn't have said it better myself ❤️
Loved this video so much! I want to make an effort to read and buy middle grade more often, especially as it does hold so much more wonder than books aimed at older audiences - it’s something I miss! ❤️
My reason for reading middle grade: It's so imaginative and creative. I feel like many authors DO NOT take the risk that middle grade book's do. One of my favorite middle grade books (Fablehaven) has a boy who gets EATEN BY A FROG that was a statue and then BURPED OUT in a bubble. Like... wut. 😂 It's so ridiculous and you just gotta believe it and go with it. One thing I'm getting more into is middle grade contemporary. There is SO MUCH going on right now in middle grade contemporary. There are a lot of own voices authors bringing up social issues so delicately for younger readers to educate them, but not shove it down their throat OR take away their ignorance too much because they're still kids and they shouldn't have to know about certain things that are so dark. The contemporary writers are expanding to more readers to connect with them. I know we're always talking about diversity and inclusiveness and I feel like middle grade is taking it by storm. 💕
Haha okay I need to read Fablehaven now haha that sounds delightful. And 100% agree with middle grade contemporary! There's so many I want to read now because so many great own voices books are out, and ones that deal with real issues, and I want to read them all! I have some on my TBR now that I can't wait to get to! 💕
@@GavinReadsItAll I recommend The Only Black Girls in Town by Brandy Colbert and Stand Up, Yumi Chung by Jessica Kim. I have loved those so far this year.
I am mostly a romance reader, I like House of Earth and Blood that is the only sarah j mass book i like, I tried reading the keeper of the lost cities and i did not like it at all. i like serpent and dove as well
Yeah I think romance is a more YA and Adult genre and not really a suitable middle grade genre, so it would be hard to find you something that is a middle grade romance.
what book do you think i should read in middle grade? I read mostly romance. I like house of earth and blood it is the only sarah j mass book i like. I also like serpent and dove. I tried to read keeper of the lost cites and did not like it I DNF it half way
There isn't really romance in middle grade so I'm not too sure what you would enjoy if that's what you like to read, but I'll see if there's something similar or suitable for ya
I'm Dyslexic and Dyspraxic because of that I used to struggle to read/write quite a bit (teacher's in primary school weren't much help). My mam used to read me middle grade from as far back as I can remember and then just before I started secondary school I used a lot of middle grade books to teach myself to read and honestly I still love it. Most of the time now I read a good bit of YA fantasy and contemporary or manga, but I still go back and read middle grade whenever I feel the urge to.
I’m so glad I found your channel about a year ago. I have been loving middle grade and might not have gone back to my favorites or new favorites without you.
"Our Cellphones can do everything, but they're bad at letting us talk to each other." ~Rainbow Rowell "Walking Distance to the Riverwalk" ~AloysiaAndAvery,😍InITTogether🌞
This is the video I didn't know I needed, thank you!! I fell out of MG for a while and the backlog has grown to an intimidating size, to the point where it's hard to find a way back in, you know?
I recently started getting back into MG (mostly due to your videos😁). I read Malamander last month and adored it. I'm also rereading a childhood favorite, Deltora Quest. It took me awhile to be able to search my library for MG because everything in the US is listed under either "juvenile fiction" or "juvenile literature." Unfortunately, my local libraries are a bit behind as far as e-copies of these books. But they just added A Pinch of Magic and you know I put a hold on that as fast as I could. 😆
Thank you for making this video. I have been struggling and beating myself up because I haven't been able to read as much as I think I should have. This encouraged me to go through my shelf of middle grades that I can never bring myself to get rid of even though I haven't read them in years. Going to reread some of my old favorites and not care if it's not knocking down my physical TBR or if I should be reading something more "my age". I needed this Gavin. Thank you
Probably starting with Letters from Camp by Kate Klise, Love From Your Friend Hannah by Mindy Skolsky and restarting and maybe finally finishing The Series of Unfortunate Events
Agree so much and I love reading MG bookds😍 Have you ever read the serie Children of the Lamp by P.B. Kerr Gavin? I would highly recommend it and it is a gem that is so much overlooked. I don't know any who have read it.
With the current state of the World, especially due to the corona virus, I need an escape. Middle grade is the perfect escape! I am so happy to be participating in Believathon again. It is exactly what I need to recharge. Thank you so much for all the fabulous middle grade recommendations.
This video is so compelling! Some of the language in children's books is beautiful and Literary.... As a teachers it's so nice to work through some of it with children and see it in their writing. You're so right, nobody is too old for MG- Good books do not speak down to the reader and can be enjoyed by everyone! It's been really nice going on a journey in the last year at work as myself and the staff have read and fallen in love with some fantastic stories!
I loved what you said about people still loving Disney and family films! It makes so much sense. Since I saw Katherine Rundell at a talk for her ‘Why you should read children’s books..’ book it completely inspired me! I have a few middle grades on my shelves but I really want to get into it more! I feel like childrens/middle grade/young adult sometimes does something that adult books don’t always capture. “ There are good book which are only for adults but there are no good books which are only for children”
I absolutely love middle grade books. I’m an elder and rediscovered middle grade with the Harry potter books . I then discovered book tube about a year and a half ago. I learned about middle grade March and devoured many mg books. I was sad that there were very few mentions of mg books then I found you. Oh happy day. I am an artist and like a moth to a flame have been drawn to the covers of mg books. Last year I read 287 books. (About a quarter we’re mg books) I have been enamored with the sensitivity of the story telling and how emotionally connective they can be. I was stunned by sweep and the girl that drank the moon and pet (might be YA) I couldn’t agree more with you that mg books are for everyone. Adults can learn so much about kids and what they are feeling. I hope more adults will take a chance and dive in. I’m up to book 105 so far this year (not all mg; I read a lot of different things) and now am loving believathon. Thank you for all you do. Keep it coming. You are one of my favorite btubers.
I was already a middlegrade reader but only a handful of books a year. Since following your channel it's turned into a couple a month, though, and I'm loving all your recommendations, Gavin! I especially loved Frostheart and The House with Chicken Legs.
It's just as you say - not liking middle grade literature is fine. Discounting it as unimportant and less intellectually stimulating, on the other hand, is too far on the elitist spectrum for me. Hell, I didn't like middle grade literature when I was in their target age group, but whatever experience came with the years thereafter has let me look at middle grade lit from a different perspective. As a linguist and a translator by trade, I follow the trends in language changes. As a literary major, I observe with a more critical eye the messages that a younger person than me might obtain from a book. As a family member, I fuel my niece and nephew's passion for reading and for developing their creativity and personalities. Finally, as an individual, I tune in to my younger self. I firmly believe that if you do not carry even a small bit of the child you were within yourself, if turn your back on mirth and nostalgia, then you will never be satisfied with your life at any age.
I have quite a lot of recommendation videos, but I also have a video coming on Thursday. It's 'If You Love This Movie, You'll Love This Middle Grade' that might help, so if you love one of the movies I mention you might want to pick up the middle grade I think would suit it
YES all the middle grade love, I'm so here for this! that Mufasa quote in the description made me cry. thank you for making this video, so many people need to remember this :)
"I will defend middle grade until I idea" hahahaha We never grow up completely I agree with that! Reading 1 adult is reading 1 book point. not 2 middle grades... People. Don't underestimate middle grades ever! I feel like they teach us more than we think... loved this video so much!!
I love the heartfelt way you talk about middle grade and how important it clearly is to you. I love this genre and it’s so great that it has a champion like you!
I love books for all ages and I go through periods of wanting to read YA or Middle Grade or Adult for the most part. I do find that I have less patience for certain Middle Grade tropes than I do for certain Adult tropes so when I run across too much of a certain trope I have a tendency to take a break from that genre/age group until I find more of said genre/age group that really grabs my attention again.
Smailholm was a 3 star read for me. I loved the lore and world building but I found there were several drawn out moments of internal monologue that made it difficult for me to want to read further. As an adult reader the early chapters of current story vs “other” (no spoilers) were a bit jarring/confusing but I understood that format leads to things being revealed later on. If you’re a younger reader and that’s your initial introduction to that style, this book could be frustrating in the earlier chapters. This felt like an adult look at childlike wonder with awesome unique magical creatures with several responsibilities both appropriate to the historical setting and reflective of full lives that made it feel like some editing could have led to this either better fitting the age group or a different one.
This meant so much. Thank you. I have loved middle grade fantasy since I was a little girl. It gives me so much joy. I've been on so many exciting rides between the pages of so many wonderful books. They inspired me to become a middle grade author. When it comes to reading and writing, middle grade is definitely my happy place.
I'm 30 and I'm going back to try middle grade because as a kid I missed out. I'm dyslexic and I've tried really hard since 6th form to get better at reading because I struggled through school. So as a kid I used to look at the cool middle grade in the library and think wow that looks so fun, but I'd never pick up the books because when I read, the story wouldn't go into my head and so I'd forget the words I'd just read straight away. Which sucked because I've always loved stories so much growing up. So from year 12 in 6th form I used the kindle read along robot voice and a Nintendo DS game called my word coach to develop my brain into understanding words better and it actually helped so much! Since then I've been to uni and studied psychology for my degree (and a hella lot of reading) and gotten even more help with my dyslexia and now I use a green reading ruler or overlay so the words sink into my brain better and if I'm tired I use the same kindle read along with the screen turned green too. And I'm happy to say I'm good at reading now, I read slower than other people but at least I retain the information I read. So now I've come across your channel Gavin I'm 100% up for having the fun I should of as a kid 😊 nowadays I love fantasy the most, especially political fantasy but is that a subgenre of middle grade? I'm up for any recommendations 😁 thanks 😊
"Don't miss out on what could be the greatest story you've ever read, just because it seems like it might be too young for you." Brilliant, Gavin...Brilliant!
Idk why this video made me so emotional but it did! It’s such a sweet message Gavin and I completely agree. There is such a special place in my heart that only middle grade can touch and I think that people underestimate what we can learn from children and by extension children’s literature. I’ve been rediscovering middle grade again in the last year and it is just so special! Thank you for all of the recommendations and for being a champion for middle grade!
this is beautifully put, thanks gavin :D another thing: middle grade has illustrations to a larger extent than books for older audiences, and theres so much beautiful artwork to see there!
I’m 28 and I just rediscovered middle grade last year by watching you and Lexi and honestly I have fallen in love will middle grade all over again from when I was a kid. I love adult,ya,and middle grade. Amazing insight gav! Thanks.
I’ve been watching booktube videos since the very beginning and that’s what got me into reading. I hadn’t really read books for fun since I was a kid. I own so many books now and over the years there’s never really been recommendations for middle grade other than Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. This is how I found Percy Jackson books and I love them and since I found your channel I’ve fallen back in love with middle grade. I never really knew where to start or what would be good so having all the recommendations is amazing. Thank you Gav 😊
I have been so looking forward to this video!! As someone who is all about middle grade, this brings me so much joy. *waves vaguely around at the world outside* I think a dose of mg is what we all need right now. 📚❤️
I’ve mostly been lurk watching your channel for a wee while, your passion and love for MG made me want to start reading it and I’m so happy I did otherwise I never would have experienced Nevermoor, which is one of my fav books of 2020 so far! You really are a bright star in this community, I love to see people talking about the books that make them happy and hopeful. 💛
I seriously think this is my favorite sit down video so far. I love middle grade books! And even though I didn't start really enjoying reading until college (I'm 27 now😳) I am beyond grateful for the Harry Potter series for bringing so much joy into my life. I have a two year old son and his little brother on the way in early July and I want to always be able to share books and my love of reading with them, especially middle grade. It would make my heart so happy to encourage them to be life long readers. Gavin, thank you so much for this video and thanks so much for Believeathon. I'm furiously happy to be reading a middle grade books these next two weeks! Sending love from Georgia in the US.
That quote from Katherine Rundell gave me chills. I'm so bloody excited for the Believathon! Last year I believe I only read 1 or 2 middle grade books so I'm so excited to finally read some more this year!
This hit me in the feels 🙈 I recently got back into middle grade and I’m loving it so much, I’ve discovered to many thanks to you and Lexi ♥️ Tysm for all you do. xoxo
I read North Child a couple of months ago and absolutely loved it! Other than the new purchases I've made, I was actually surprised at what middle grade I already owned. I'm always up for escaping the real world and middle grade does it perfectly.
How to Train Your Gavin No, thank YOU ❤️❤️❤️ I got back to reading middle grade because of you, and it has made the current situation so much better! It’s impossible to NOT smile throughout all of your videos! So THANK YOUUUUUU❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for this video!! Sometimes I get scared to read middle grade because I feel like I would be judged by others! But I shouldn’t let that stop me! I love family friendly books! ❤️
the language can be easier but i have while reading middle grade words that i have never come across even in adult books so i had to look it up in a dictionary. i love the fact that middle grade can really take you on a journey no matter what type of book it is and at the end of every journey you learn something that makes you a better person and this will stay with you. i agree with middle grade making the reader young at heart heck i'm 50 in june but inside i'm wayyyyy younger and i intend to stay that way as i get older.
What a lovely message :) I don't really read middle grade much but that's just my preference. Middle grade books are awesome too! :)) AND THE BOOK COVERS ARE THE BEST!!! :D
Harry Potter was big for me as a kid, and I still love it. I mean, it did almost get me expelled from private school as a kid haha Middle Grade is amazing, and just because I'm an adult doesn't mean I can't read it! I do read a lot of middle grade out loud with my 7 years old and it is the best feeling... I also read some of them just myself and that's great too! I read a mix of Middle Grade, YA and Adult and they all have beauty and I hate when people look down because the book is "aimed at a younger age"
I just found your video from Twitter, and I really needed to hear some of the things you said. I just started Keeper of the Lost Cities series and have fallen in love with it, its my first time picking up a middle grade.
Amen!! I always reread the same middle grade series because I love them so much, but I really need to branch out to some newer series - I have Keeper of the Lost Cities on my TBR so might have to go to that next time I'm feeling a middle grade series!
Great video Gavin. Sums up middle grade perfectly. I wasn’t into it until my daughter hit 11 and found herself in the tween reading stage. Ever her take on middle grade was wrong “it’s too baby mum”. She was still looking at the 6 year old stuff though. We’ve discover lots of great books and authors since. “A Pinch of Magic” was an eye opener for her in terms of the types of books that are in the middle grade section. She doesn’t have to grow up before her time. Me on the other hand - I refuse to grow up.
Such a nice video! I still love for example Wardstone Chrinicles and I consider one of the best book series i've ever read (despire the last few books in the series), it really got me more into fantasy
Middle grade books are the foundation for all books, you don’t jump straight in to adult books or contemporary etc and people forget that they used to read these. If it wasn’t for Gavin and Believathon round 1 I would never have reignited my passion for books at all
The books have a thoroughly heart felt plot, or they are full of adventure/mystery/thriller, just because they are middle grade doesn’t mean they can’t follow the same themes as adult books they do but are just age related in language on context/content. I have come across some absolute beauties of books picking up middle grade and my collection of those are bigger than my adult contemporary and fantasy put together. When you have a really crappy day too, picking up a middle grade can be just the tonic to pick you up
How to Train Your Gavin I adore my middle grades....Orphans of the tide on my hit list as one of my many extra reads so I can’t wait to see what this huge shock bit is you were on about 🤗🤗
I enjoy reading middle grade on occasion (as you know!), but I've found I'm a little more critical insofar as there are books I read that I recognize I probably would have enjoyed if I were much younger, but as an adult they don't work for me. But then I come across a book like the Girl Who Swallowed the Moon and I realize, aha, that's why I still read them!
I love to read a couple of middle grade books a month to break down my reading, sometimes books are too serious like I was reading Kafka and after that I was like nop! Going back to Percy Jackson 😆 some of my fave middle grade: A Series of Unfortunate Events, Percy Jackson, Other Words for Home, Narnia & Harry Potter 😍
i've really been wanting to get back into middle grade since all my YA and adult reads this year have been 1-2 stars ... now time to binge some recommendation videos 😂
Oh Gavin if I could love this video a thousand times I would ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I have always loved middle grade and I am old enough to be your mum (and then some) lol .... Harry Potter is my all time favourite series and I was an adult when this came out, I re read the series ever time a new book came out. I will always be a kid at heart until I die and I love your recommendations and championing these books 💙 xox
I think that sometimes a middle grade book/series can be worth more than a YA or adult book. I first started reading Harry Potter when I was 25 and I still love those books as much now at 39 as I did then.
Honestly I only stopped reading middelgrade because I almost didnt read books for 2 years. I read like 6 to 12 middelgrades a week when I was younger. Before I watched Jade and you I missed the part of me represented in booktube. I read YA and adult as well but middelgrade is just the best escapism for me. Honestly your videos remind me that I just can talk about middelgrade on my socials cause middelgrade is for everyone.
I love middle grade . It's been a while but what got be back into middle grade and never looked back ... I forget the author but Olives Ocean , than it was Rick Roradin[sp] [idk why I feel HP is young adult though] L.R. Laffers Theodosia Throckmorton series. But when I was a kid I mosly read Horror Like R.L Stine, Louis Duncan[I think shes young adult, but read her in 6-8th grade] and the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark [which mosly was in elementary school for me but kept reading them anyway in Middle School]
@@GavinReadsItAll I haven't re read them in my 30s but as a kid in the 90s just ate it up. And I watched the TV show. [And Are you afraid of the dark] I loved both. Later I liked r l stine's Fear Street
My partner and I are trying to figure out where your accent is from. Can you please enlighten the non initiated lol....cause I have no idea. He thinks your Irish but I don't know haha
"The language is easier to read but that doesn't mean that the words on a page don't mean as much"
amen
Words are powerful in every form ❤️
I loved this. I totally agree that just because the language is “easier” doesn’t mean it’s not as meaningful!
Thank you so much 💙
This was such a heartfelt message, and holds so much truth 🖤
The people need to hear it 💙
Middle grade is my favorite too!
i recently got back into reading middle grade by reading a bunch of LGBT themed books. THANK YOU! People don’t need to approve of my reading taste but it’s so nice to see another adult who likes middle grade.

Thank you so much for your comment and I love that you already enjoy middle grade so much! They also seem to be my higher-rated books too.
CS Lewis said “When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” and I think that pretty well says it!
Oh I love that quote so much, I've never heard that one before, thanks for sharing!
I loved this so much!
Aw thanks so much!

Aw yes what a fantastic comment, so glad you agree too. Definitely stay realistic, but keep hold of that childlike wonder.
I adore this 💕💕
Thank you 💕
That was such a great talk... I've been following you channel for a few months now and I feel your comments so much. I live in South America and here the sole love of reading is a misconcieved notion, let alone reading "children's books". Thanks for your words, such an inspiration for helping others reach the true meaning of diving in the world of books! Cheers form overseas !
Aww thank you so much for watching and your kind comment! Cheers to you!
I loved this video so much Gavin
Thank you so much Katy! There really is so much joy to find in them and they make me feel safe and comforted too, couldn't have said it better myself ❤️
Loved this video so much! I want to make an effort to read and buy middle grade more often, especially as it does hold so much more wonder than books aimed at older audiences - it’s something I miss! ❤️
Aw yeah that would be awesome, if you want some magic and whimsy back in your life, then middle grade is the one ❤️
How to Train Your Gavin for sure!!
This made me tear up a little. Beautifully said! I am starting to read more middle grades thanks to you and Jade ❤
Aw thank you, and I'm so happy to hear that!
I rediscovered middle grade last month and i am so in love. No matter the topics, even when heavy, they just feel like such a warm blanket!
Yay I am so happy you re-discovered it! I love the comparison to a warm blanket, I'll be using that to describe middle grade from now on 💕
I am mostly a romance reader, I like House of Earth and Blood that is the only sarah j mass book i like, I tried reading the keeper of the lost cities and i did not like it at all. i like serpent and dove as well
I also like Hunger Games books
I also have read twilight series that i love
I love that middle grade can really help, it's so heartwarming and such a learning tool 💕
I’m so glad I found your channel about a year ago. I have been loving middle grade and might not have gone back to my favorites or new favorites without you.
Aww I'm so glad you found my channel too, thank you for everything!

This is the video I didn't know I needed, thank you!! I fell out of MG for a while and the backlog has grown to an intimidating size, to the point where it's hard to find a way back in, you know?
No, thank YOU! And I totally understand that, I constantly feel like I'm playing catch up with everything.
I recently started getting back into MG (mostly due to your videos😁). I read Malamander last month and adored it. I'm also rereading a childhood favorite, Deltora Quest.
It took me awhile to be able to search my library for MG because everything in the US is listed under either "juvenile fiction" or "juvenile literature."
Unfortunately, my local libraries are a bit behind as far as e-copies of these books. But they just added A Pinch of Magic and you know I put a hold on that as fast as I could. 😆
Ahhh yes A Pinch of Magic, get that one on hold haha. Aw I'm glad I could help you get back into MG!
Aw I'm so glad I could encourage you, and re-reading old favourites can be the best medicine we need.
Agree so much and I love reading MG bookds😍 Have you ever read the serie Children of the Lamp by P.B. Kerr Gavin? I would highly recommend it and it is a gem that is so much overlooked. I don't know any who have read it.
I haven't, I'll check them out!
@@GavinReadsItAll fantastic! I hope the interest you and you read them one day!🤞😍
With the current state of the World, especially due to the corona virus, I need an escape. Middle grade is the perfect escape! I am so happy to be participating in Believathon again. It is exactly what I need to recharge. Thank you so much for all the fabulous middle grade recommendations.
I'm so happy you're participating in Believathon too, I hope it provides the escape and magic you need right now!
Agreed completely, and thanks so much for watching Nicola!
There are good book which are only for adults but there are no good books which are only for children”
I WISH I'd seen a Katherine Rundell talk! She just seems so inspiring in person. I love that quote!
How to Train Your Gavin I didn’t know much about middle grade before it! My friend suggested to go and I’m so glad I did 💕
I absolutely love middle grade books.
Aw thank you so much and I love your comment! You read so many books, wow that's incredible!
Absolutely agree with everything you’ve said. You’re actually making me tear up 😭💕
Aww thank you for your kind words, hugs! 💕
Love this video, thank you 😊
Thank you for watching 😊

@@GavinReadsItAll THEN DONT BE HEARTWARMING GOSH hahaha
I was already a middlegrade reader but only a handful of books a year. Since following your channel it's turned into a couple a month, though, and I'm loving all your recommendations, Gavin! I especially loved Frostheart and The House with Chicken Legs.
Aww yay those are 2 of my all-time favourites (as you know haha)
Aw I love that you keep your niece and nephew reading! I do the exact same!! Agree with everything you said and glad you liked the video.
Tbh I think you're well on your way to take over the world with middlegrade
Hehehe
I would love to read middle grade, but not sure of where to start
I have quite a lot of recommendation videos, but I also have a video coming on Thursday. It's 'If You Love This Movie, You'll Love This Middle Grade' that might help, so if you love one of the movies I mention you might want to pick up the middle grade I think would suit it
Thank you
YES all the middle grade love, I'm so here for this!
that Mufasa quote in the description made me cry.
thank you for making this video, so many people need to remember this :)
Any Disney quote gets me in the feels too
"I will defend middle grade until I idea" hahahaha
We never grow up completely I agree with that!
Reading 1 adult is reading 1 book point. not 2 middle grades... People.
Don't underestimate middle grades ever! I feel like they teach us more than we think...
loved this video so much!!
Aw exactly Sasha and I'm so happy you think the same
Well people who cant read middle grades are not trustworthy.
I mean I didn't want to say it 😉
I love the heartfelt way you talk about middle grade and how important it clearly is to you. I love this genre and it’s so great that it has a champion like you!
Aw thanks Victoria! I probably talk about it a bit too much haha
Currently reading Furthermore for Believathon and Asian Readathon:) Just finished Smailholm and about to finally pick up Bunnicula!
There are a lot of tropes in middle grade, you're so right. Also what did you think of Smailholm? It's on my TBR.
Aw I love that reading middle grade has inspired you to write your own! That's so magical.
I love everything about this!!
Thank you!
I'm up for any recommendations 😁 thanks 😊
ricecakepower Aw what an inspiring story! I haven’t come across any political fantasies in middle grade but if I do I will let you know 💙
@@GavinReadsItAll thanks 😊 and it's exactly why I should share my story (and get into middle grade 😁) and no worries thanks 😊

Aw thank you for tuning in and listening to my recommendations, I appreciate it ❤️
I like having Middle Grade books on my reading list to help getting out of reading slumps. It helps me get back to why I love reading.
Aw I love that reason ♥️
this is beautifully put, thanks gavin :D
another thing: middle grade has illustrations to a larger extent than books for older audiences, and theres so much beautiful artwork to see there!
That's so true, I love illustrations so much!

Awww Lexi will love to hear that Jessica! Thank YOU so much for watching and listening to us ❤️
I’ve been watching booktube videos since the very beginning and that’s what got me into reading.
Aw thank you!! I'm glad you enjoy my recommendations, that means a lot! ❤️

Aw thank you so much and I appreciate you watching my videos! Means a lot ♥️

I read North Child a couple of months ago and absolutely loved it! Other than the new purchases I've made, I was actually surprised at what middle grade I already owned. I'm always up for escaping the real world and middle grade does it perfectly.
It really does do it perfectly, doesn't it? It has a magic that can't be recaptured by any other age category

How to Train Your Gavin Nevermoor and Keeper of the lost cities
the language can be easier but i have while reading middle grade words that i have never come across even in adult books so i had to look it up in a dictionary. i love the fact that middle grade can really take you on a journey no matter what type of book it is and at the end of every journey you learn something that makes you a better person and this will stay with you. i agree with middle grade making the reader young at heart heck i'm 50 in june but inside i'm wayyyyy younger and i intend to stay that way as i get older.

What a lovely message :) I don't really read middle grade much but that's just my preference. Middle grade books are awesome too! :)) AND THE BOOK COVERS ARE THE BEST!!! :D
AuburnAfterglow omg middle grades have the best covers, it is known 💙
Harry Potter was big for me as a kid, and I still love it. I mean, it did almost get me expelled from private school as a kid haha
Middle Grade is amazing, and just because I'm an adult doesn't mean I can't read it! I do read a lot of middle grade out loud with my 7 years old and it is the best feeling... I also read some of them just myself and that's great too! I read a mix of Middle Grade, YA and Adult and they all have beauty and I hate when people look down because the book is "aimed at a younger age"
Reading with kids is the best, I do that sometimes with my niece and nephews.

Ebba agreed 100% ❤️
Great video Gavin. Sums up middle grade perfectly. I wasn’t into it until my daughter hit 11 and found herself in the tween reading stage. Ever her take on middle grade was wrong “it’s too baby mum”. She was still looking at the 6 year old stuff though. We’ve discover lots of great books and authors since. “A Pinch of Magic” was an eye opener for her in terms of the types of books that are in the middle grade section. She doesn’t have to grow up before her time. Me on the other hand - I refuse to grow up.
Stella A Blake yesss refuse to grow up, we will forever be young at heart! ✨
Such a nice video! I still love for example Wardstone Chrinicles and I consider one of the best book series i've ever read (despire the last few books in the series), it really got me more into fantasy
Aw nice! Yeah a lot of what we read as kids informs our reading tastes in later years.
So beautifully said :) thanks for bringing MG books back for me

I’ve started this round reading 13 Treasures by Michelle Harrison and damn me it’s great, I absolutely love it and I’ve got my escape back 🤗🤗

There's always one or two gems to discover and I'm glad you still give them a chance :)

I think that sometimes a middle grade book/series can be worth more than a YA or adult book. I first started reading Harry Potter when I was 25 and I still love those books as much now at 39 as I did then.
That's so true!
Yesss I love this!! Totally agree, it is for everyone and so great to talk about them 💜
