Making an enclosure for my Laser engraver

  • I got this 2500mW Laser engraver from gearbest .com. To protect it from the dust in the shop and manage the fume extraction I build an enclosure for it. Its made from 12mm thick plywood and 3mm acrylic. I salvaged a fan, switch and some wires from an old PC Power supply. For the fume filtering, I use some active carbon filter that I got from my home center.

    I think it can be usefull to make smth to switch off laser when door of enclosure is opened.
    Reed switch or smth like this.

      @@QueueTeePies There is a point, with some youtubers reporting that this Gearbest junk turns on the laser unexpectedly. Plus, I wouldn't even trust it enough to included large acrylic windows. Instead, I'd stick an old cell phone in the box and stream video out. No windows, unless they're made from correctly-rated uv laser filter material. ...and I wouldn't trust the included glasses for a sunny day, let alone an el cheapo China Direct laser engraver.

    in order to engrave acrylic, you can simply put sharpie or a dark marker or paint on the acrylic for it to absorb the heat. This means that rather than refracting the laser, it will absorb it and you will be able to engrave. Just find a solution to dissolve or wipe away that paint/marker when you are done.

    Great video, but why would you want to filter the fan? First of all it creates more work for the fan and significantly reduces your airflow, and secondly, why filter it? You want to remove everything you can and what can that filter actually stop??, besides your air flow? It's only smoke and fumes you are removing and trying to stop those with a filter will just make a stinky filter.

    • @Ollaris

    • @Ollaris
      @Ollaris  3 года назад

      It’s NOT for protecting your eyes! It’s there to keep the fumes in and give the machine a more “finished “ look. You should always wear special Laser safe glasses when operating a laser of any kind.

    Just to share what I have learned from my Eleksmaker Pro A3 2.5Watt unit. The clear acrylic that you put on the cover will not protect your eyes from the 445nm diode laser. You need an amber colored acrylic made specifically for this wavelength. Another thing, this low power laser cannot engrave clear acrylic at all. This wavelength goes right through it and does not burn it. Also, this low-power diode laser cannot cut white paper, it reflects off it and won't burn it either. Please protect your eyes by using the correct color acrylic and some good eyeglasses made specifically for the 445nm wavelength.

      I'm glad someone else mentioned using laser viewing glass! My idea behind an enclosure was so I *wouldn't have* to wear laser goggles!
      But the quality and precision in the build is *excellent*. How long did it take to make, Sebastian? And is it a rivet gun you used with glue to attach the sides?
      If you use the charcoal filter to filter the fumes back into clean air, why then do you also need the pipe to the extraction fan at the top of your workshop? Or am I overestimating the effectiveness of the charcoal filtration?

      Those types of laser proof acrylic panels would cost more then the laser engraver itself so I gone with the cheaper route. I used a nail gun and wood glue to fasten it together. Since then I removed the charcoal filter. It wasn’t working that well, probably to small of a surface area to catch all the particles. I would recommend an exhaust pipe even with a better filtering system.

      @@Ollaris The charcoal didn't work? Hmm. So it'd be best just to have an extraction pipe going directly through the wall, then, I guess.
      Have plenty of pipe and timber walls I can make holes in w/o needing a core drill.
      I also have two pieces of laser viewing glass, so if I adapt some of the fantastic construction ideas in your video, I may be able to get away w/ not needing goggles at all...👍

      You don't need an officially laser proof rated panel. Our lasers are blue, so red blocks them. I got some deep red transparent acrylic on ebay for a few quid that does the job beautifully.
      Basically if I can cut it with the laser(even though it has to take about ten passes going really slow), that proves it is opaque to the laser, and the distance it is from the focus point means any light coming near will be unfocussed, so while not guaranteed harmless, certainly reduced to a reasonably safe level. Good enough for stray reflections. And at least as good as the cheap ebay safety glasses.

    Saudações Ollari's; tenho duas perguntas:
    1) Com essa máquina, vc pode cortar alguma coisa?
    2) Esse Laser pode ser substituído por um Laser de 30W ou 40W para cortar algum material de 5mm, como Compensado, Acrílico, etc.? Obrigado

    Olá tudo bem ? Voce saberia me responder se esta maquina na versão 5500 conseguiria contar papel, tipo papelão so que mais fino?

    • @Ollaris
      @Ollaris  6 лет назад

      Yes it can cut paper in one pass, in cardboard it depends on the thickness, but with multiple passes, it can cut to thicker material too.

    You inspired me to make one similar to this. I added green acetate transparent film (for OHPs) to the windows so I can keep an eye on the engraving while doing other jobs.

    Danke für das Video. 7:48 das Kabel sieht aber gruselig aus, ist das so eines wenn man es aufschneidet so einen Eisenbahndraht mit 0,1 mm findet ?, aber für 10 A drauf steht ? Das könnte irgendwann anfangen zu brennen - vielleicht doch mal durch eines von Conra_d tauschen

    Sehr gute Idee und saubere Ausführung. Nur ein Problem: Der Laser ist in der Tat sehr gefährlich. Eine rote oder orange Acrylglasscheibe wäre da erheblich besser vor allem sicherer für die Augen. Ein Laserwarnschild auf dem Gehäuse ist ebensfalls ratsam.
