This performance was from the 2005 Helsinki concert (End of an Era DVD), original lead singer Tarja Turunen's last Nightwish show, she was backstage changing outfits. . After the show, the guys gave her an open letter dismissing her from the band after 9 years and 5 albums. She has gone on to a long and successful solo career.
David Gilmore HAS heard this, and he loved it.
This was song #8 in an 18 song set. Marko is his name. He kills it. He only sang lead in a few songs with Nightwish during his tenure (2001-2021). He sang lead in a band called Tarot before joining Nightwish. Marko sung several covers over the years while she was changing, he also did Megadeth Symphony of Destruction
To hear Tarja(the most operatic of the 3 female leads), and Marko killing it again, try The Siren, or their cover of Phantom of the Opera , from this same show.
To hear Tarot , try Wing of Darkness or Tides.

Marko is the Finnish Metal God! His band Tarot was one of the first, possibly the first, bands who brought metal to Finland (back then without a beard in full 80s glam getup, very cute!). Nowadays Finland is the most metal country in the world and a big part of this musical culture is thanks to him. He is pretty much the most respected musician around and is always either first or last to sing in every collaborative metal project from Finland out of respect. From helping out Hevisaurus, who play metal for kids, to being the undisputed king of the Tuska festival anniversary song. Check out his solo stuff too, he absolutely ruled when I saw him on Thursday last week :D
He is also absolutely hilarious but unfortunately you do not see that side of him in Nightwish. Additionally his vocal abilities extend far beyond what he does in Nightwish, even if he has done a ton of different things there too. It's totally worth investigating everything he is involved in, he blossoms much more in other projects.

Marko Hietala (pron: HEE-ah-Tallah) is a classically trained guitarist, bassist, songwriter and incredible vocalist both solo and in harmony.
Yes, the guys from PF are fans of this performance!!
The band would often (in early days) play a cover/tribute during the time when Tarja was changing costumes. This show was in their home country, In Helsinki...it was the last show w Tarja, as she was fired directly after this concert. Thus, the band played w a special intensity...not knowing if Nightwish would continue. I recommend the entire concert!
Sadly, Marko left the band a couple yrs back for health reasons...but he had an earlier solo band, Tarot that was fantastic...check out song, Tides, live Undead Indeed...a chilling vocal performance! He's done many collaborations contributing vocals, including all male super singers, The Northern Kings. And do check out his latest solo project Pyre of the Black Heart, with its 3 singles, Stones, Voice of My Father, and Dead God's Son (both in English and Finnish!). Marko is the very definition of a Rock Star! We miss him so much w Nightwish, but luckily, he's kept busy!
And, greetings from the California desert, Nightwish Army for life!

When You take in the fact that this was the last concert on the world tour and also the night when they let Tarja go after the concert. The feelings were tens in the band even if Tarja didn't know anything. And another fact is that the drummer Jukka who suffers from insomnia had a huge migraine that evening but managed to play the entire concert anyway.

I love this version of High Hopes, and I saw the original played by PF on the Division Bell Tour. The Big Bell PF used in the stage show was impressive, but Tuomas does well simulating the sound, Marco has so much more angst and emotion in his singing, and Empuu's version of the Guitar parts is right on point.
I have found that early concerts tended to have the band play one of a variety of songs they like from other bands during the mid show costume change for the lead singer.
More recently, I think Nightwish plays a Nightwish written Celtic styled instrumental ( Last of the Wilds ) for the mid concert singer's break/costume change.

I'd say Roger Waters has very little to say about this as it was written after he left PF but Gilmour loved it

Roger Waters probably doesn’t think all that much about this song, neither this tribute, nor the original. He never was very complimentary of David Gilmour’s lyrics, and has always been bitter they continued the band without him. The Nightwish guys are fans of Pink Floyd, so they did this tribute. During the Tarja years, they nearly always did a cover song during their shows, to allow her to change. This was one of the most often used and probably the best in my opinion. This was from her last show in 2005. Hence ‘End of an Era’. It was a stand-alone show in Helsinki, not a festival.

You should check out The Islander live at Tampere. It`s a Marko song with Floor doing his back vocals. It has a very Pink Floyd-ish vibe. Also, While Your Lips are Still Red for a slower song, amazingly sang by Marko (and Floor as back vocalist again).. this band is out of this world.

The drummer, Jukka, played in that very animated style but had to retire in about 2014, due to insomnia…. Just about the exact same time, a drummer named Pau was emerging in the same playing style, playing with her two sisters - The Warning has now become possibly the best rock band playing today….

About your Dream Theater comment, they covered DSOTM in it's entirety live and they recorded it. Highly recommended to check it out. Dream Theater has quite a bit of covers, they've covered Queen, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Zebra, Led Zeppelin, and many others.
