this is the BEST video on instructions for grape trellis. Thank u so much..bc for a female with no handyman skills I can understand your instructions 100%..
Pete, we have been wanting grape vines for a long time . We put 4X4 in the ground to use for the post but you have made me rethink this whole thing. Your a hard working man. I think you could work circles around any young man half your age. Thank you; I have learned so much from your videos.
Thank you, I really appreciate it. If you all ready put the post in, you could just make sure to treat the post's often with a good Thompson water seal. But the problem is in where the post sits in the concrete like a cup holding water.
Grape vines are cool. If the right grape variety is chosen they can keep producing tasty grapes and the leaves are good for cooking too. When I was young and we had grape vines on mesh along the back veranda, all the grapes grown at lower levels were eaten by our dogs. I think you have so dogs so you’ll have to watch for this. We worked out the dogs ate the grapes as little tufts of dog hair was caught on the grape vines around where the grapes had been. Good job on the trellis. I’ve never see wire twisted with a drill like you do.
Just love your vids. I just started gardening during our coronavirus down in time in my back yard Fort Worth, Tx. Your family is living my future dream. I really want to have chickens but probably my hoa and neighbors will want to do harm to me. Lol. Keep your vids coming. Thank you
Thanks for the video. Decided to go metal over wood. Used nine gauge. Doubled up on the end side supports and pulled together with ties. Twisting with a drill simply didn’t work on this gauge.
Excellent instructions. I'm going to be doing the same thing really soon and I will be using practically the same thing you did. Thank you for the video.
“Inherited” an old backyard grapevine and am learning so much about revitalizing this little old arbor. Your video was instructional, crystal clear and right to the point. I learned a-lot. Might stick to wood posts but learned much....Thanks!
Do you think that this would be able to handle 6 plants if I put a fence post in between each? Or could it possibly hold more than that? I’m wanting to plant 6-8 Concord.
working with concrete is so fun. except you have to get all the separate materials together at one place at one time. and the water don't forget the water! Trailer, truck guy at gravel yard Ken. . do it yourself. What a great country we live in!
Just put my trellis posts up this weekend. WAS also going to do 4 arm niffin but decided on Umbrella Kniffin instead. Excited to see how it turns out! I'm planning on 3 Concord and 3 Reliance.
@@petebeasttexashomesteading You probably have already come up with a fertilizer plan, but I would like to suggest you check out blood meal and azomite as amendments. Awesome additions :)
Mark your post hole digger with blue painters tape at the depth you want your holes so you dont need to get your tape measure for every hole. Just dig down to the tape mark.
Always good videos... Over the course of my life gardening I've found that plants don't care if the fertilizers are Organic or not.All they know is NPK. I always amend my soils over the winter with compost and minerals....
Good job Pete, interesting method using the drill to twist the two wires together, I have never seen that done before. Good luck with the grapes, is the end plan to make wine with them?
I bought 4 burpy grape plants from our nursery and it looks like only 1 survived thru last winter. This is now the next season it's July now and the one plant is growing and its growing good from what I can tell.so my question is will this plant produce grapes on its own or does it need to be with another plant to pollinate? I'm going to trellis it like your video shows for now but am I just growing a grape that won't produce any grapes or will it pollinate some how? Any suggestions would be helpful. I believe my grape vine the only one that's growing is a concord grape
I have five concords growing on another grape trellis also. Most grape plants are self pollinating and don't need another plant to produce grapes. But will produce better if you had another plant near by.
Did you mention the wire gauge you chose to use? I've been wanting to put in a small vineyard for years. Your video may finally push me to it this year. The only thing I will do different is using a longer anchor, (40"), and having it HDG, (hot dipped galvanized). I am thinking of 5 years down the road when the wire has to support 1200 pounds of grapes! Thanks for posting this great video. I love your presentation's thoroughness and pace. Keep up the good work and be safe, be well.
Next time put some antiseize on that tensioning rod's threads. To protect them from rust, and to be able to turn or reuse them any time in the future. Good job.
The amount of stretching that goes on with the 80 ft. wire is much greater than the guide wire, so I would think you should have put the wire ratchet on the long wire and the turnbuckle on the guide wire.
Pete! Thank you so much for taking the time to make the video and other instructional videos. I just completed my grape trellis project following your approach and instructions. I wish I could post a picture of my finished grape trellis. I am actually following your corner brace post video and will be having 60 x 10 ft posts delivered tomorrow. I will be applying the pine tar to the posts. Question: do you think if I add concrete to each of the dug holes with posts in place will be overkill? Will adding concrete to each hole just complicate things especially if I have to replace posts in the future? I’d appreciate your opinion. Again, many thanks for these videos!!! Marlon
Thank you, I really wouldn't add the concrete to the posts, it will only hold water and help rot the posts. If you brace them as I did in the video, they're not going anywhere.
No fruit yet, they got beat up pretty bad in winter of 2021 with a freak cold spell and then too much rain that spring. We had some small fruit starting but didn't make it. I think next spring we'll have some fruit to eat.
Isn't it true though, that if the seeds you plant from the grape you're eating are a hybrid, there's no knowing if the vines you grow from them will be true copies of the parent plant?
20:00 that tie down auger would’ve been better install at a 45 away from the post. It would use the soil against the rod as well as the auger portion to hold it down. Your grape trellis looks like it’ll last a really long time. 👍🏼
The trellis is great, I ended up planting Mourvedre grape vines. This is their second year. Out of five vines, I lost two which I'm now in the process of rooting new plants from cuttings to replace the two that died.
For European varieties a native rootstock is usually used in the South/Southeast because most European vines die from endemic grape diseases. That is part of why the West Coast wine industry is so far ahead. Something to consider if more die. All the best, B
Shouldn’t you plant the first vine 8-10 feet from the end post? Won’t you only be able to run 2 vines off, instead of 4? (Plus wouldn’t it be easier to access the tension if the plant isn’t so close?) Never have grown grapes myself. My Gran had hers on a cattle panel when I was a little girl, which was fine for a while, but hard to prune.
two questions: How did they fare against the sub-zero weather last month? and do you think these plants will be okay against the Pierce's disease we have here in the south against non-native grapes? BTW, I'm also in east Texas between Gilmer and Longview.
Your fence posts are in backwards. the clip goes above the knob on the post to hold it up. Other than that, good job. Thats how my great grandpa showed me how to make a grape trellis.
Yes, I ordered the grape seeds from Malta and they are round black grapes. Planting from seed will not always get the same exact grape as from the original plant but it should be close to the original plant.
i dont know how many post you are putting down you get a 6 inch augar with a shaft it fit a larelect drill wi aportable generator you put the down in a hurry easy on your back i have one it works like a champ im 86 i extended my vine this spring i used 4x4x8 treated down 24 in 2 wires 1 at 4 1 at 6 24 ft apart wrks great in 3 yer they go post to post
Thanks, I purchased them from an ebay seller named maltaseeds27, they were the black round grapes. Here's the link to his store front. www.ebay.com/str/maltaseeds27
I'd love to see your grapes now. I know the feeling of getting tired of replacing trees.

He was right. I put in wooden posts and the bent and rotteted after 5 years. Redoing it like this video shows.
Thanks Pete!!! I always like watching your channel because you have such practical solutions to common problems.

Well done video and description. Thanks...I will be constructing something similar but with fewer plants.
Awesome job Pete, my wife will love this idea!

I just ordered 13 galvanized terminal posts so I can do what you did here.
Thanks Pete. Great Video. I am going to use your ideas to build a Vertical Shoot Positioning next spring for my vines.
Awesome 👍
Job done well .... it will help me in my venture , thanks for sharing .....
Awesome thank you 👍
I like the metal posts bc they will probably last longer.
Hello Pete. Your trellis looks great...waiting to see how well the vines grow. Good Luck!!

Thanks for your time
Thanks for the video. Decided to go metal over wood. Used nine gauge. Doubled up on the end side supports and pulled together with ties. Twisting with a drill simply didn’t work on this gauge.
Yeah that 9 gauge wire is pretty thick.
Learned a great deal. Thanks Pete, we're putting ours up this spring in Ill-I-noise. 💛🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇

We have not have much luck with growing grapes from seeds. We’ll try the cold stratification next time. Love your trellis!

I like the design, it seems like the cheapest method without sacrificing strength or durability.

Thank you, we're going to use the grapes for eating, jam, jelly and juice. My drinking days are over.🤪
Why didn’t you put first plant 10’ away from end post so it could run 10’ to end post and 10’ to t- post? Just wondering..
Pete how would you do it on a hill and keep the wires level?

I used a 12 gauge galvanized wire and the 40'' anchor is a good idea especially if you get a lot of rain or have soft soil.
Next time put some antiseize on that tensioning rod's threads. To protect them from rust, and to be able to turn or reuse them any time in the future. Good job.

What type of ground covering have you lain down throughout your garden/ orchard?
I use lots of woven weed fabric cloth in between my raised beds and where my water melons grow. I use mulched wood chips around my trees.
Any update on these grapevines this years?? Any fruits produced from any of them yet?

Yep, I'm growing them in another area of the property.
How is the trellis holding up and how are the grapes?

Could you pin the link for those pots? They look better than my dixie cups! Are they the McConkey Square Nursery Pots, case of 60, for $18?
Yes, I purchased some just a few weeks back. They're great.

They almost died so I pulled them out and put in some bare root grafted grape vines. I'll be replanting the old grape vines in another area.
