    Don't forget to weigh the old batteries so when you add the new batteries you know how much weight you need to add or subtract to keep the original buoyancy as close to factory spec as possible.

    "Good Enough" are dangerous words when it comes to subs, rockets, and airplanes. Just do it right first and then test it. The more you fiddle with it half heartedly, the more of a chance it gets broken and you become more complacent. Just remember a failure could mean the lives of anyone on this thing. None of us want to see any of you guys hurt or worse.

      Exactly what I was thinking. I know he is eager to get it in the water but like the sub expert he brought it to after he bought it said, he really needs to tear the whole thing down and confirm everything is in good condition. Decades of sitting can dry out and rot many things and even a small amount of moisture can corrode and rust.

    From what I understand Lithium iron phosphate battery's are the most stable and safe around saltwater conditions. I have been following another RUclipsr who is completely restoring a 100 year old sailing yacht the "Tally ho" and in one of his last videos he was talking about them to use as a massive battery bank to power his boat. And they are very heavy battery's also so they might be a good option to keep the weight similar.it might be worth looking into. Also you should definitely weigh the old batteries and whatever new ones you decide to use so you know how much ballast weight to add or remove to keep the overall weight the same.

  • @charlesurrea1451
    @charlesurrea1451 2 года назад +92

    In the future, remember to take the lead out before you have to move.
    Once you learn to calculate ballast per load out, you get used to arranging shot bags for balance .
    Your rig is set up with a constant vent in the cab. You will have to valve that if you want to keep a bubble for talking.
    2 Liters of air lifts 1 Kilo weight.
    Do not include the weight of the passengers or gear that isn't stationary.

    Electrical engineer here! I would suggest using as similar lead-acid batteries as you can to the old ones. Most likely they were much better sealed than even marine lead-acid to prevent water ingress in case the case seal failed, and lead-acid tends to play a bit nicer with water in case of total failure than lithium will. However, lead-acid tech as not improved much since '97, so you likely won't get much improvement on power, if any at all. Additionally, lead-acid batteries are really easily recyclable, so you honestly might be able to refurbish the old ones at a specialty shop. Although it might cost more then new batteries. That being said, I'm sure there are ways to use lithium batteries underwater if you want increased performance. Finally, I would make sure you check the bearings on the motors. After sitting for a while the bearings might be flat on one side.

Also I know they make one big 24 volt battery that might work. Keep in mind the more min amps you have the longer the running time. Hope that helps. Hey Jordan, take this for whatever it offers but there’s a RUclips channel called ”stymer “ with 3 videos that I believe to be exactly the same as your submarine. The videos don’t really explain much as it was for a commercial I assume, but loving what you’re doing keep up the fantastically entertaining videos and we hope to see that sub cruising underwater soon!

    Cool dude. You just need a little training to manage risks with batteries. Voltage is not the problem here. Short-circuit current consequences, yes. Also, using Lead-Acid batteries, be carefull of the hydrogen accumulation in your confined hull.

    • @918Kustomz
      @918Kustomz 2 года назад

      You can get sealed lead acids. Or agm

    • @fredericmoreau5170
      @fredericmoreau5170 2 года назад

      @@918Kustomz yep, but even gel or solid sealed lead batteries must have valves. The chemistry is chemistry. You charge, you have hydrogen. Pressure must remain safe !

    seal and put valves in to make ballast tanks to remove lead ingots. add extra compressed tanks also. add sonar ( fish finder should do) Change over to lithium battery packs. Add spot light. Add CO2 scrubber and emergency buoyancy kit. Tilting trailer will help also.

    Please use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Batteries, those are among the safest within lithium batteries. They will power this submarine all day long!

    Great to see the motors are still running. Dont go to far the first time underwater as the first one I used ceased after 15mins of running due to it not being underwater for a long time.

    I am an older woman and I recall these things being sold as kits back in the 80s. There should be some assembly manuals floating around somewhere. Finding one may not exactly be easy but if you can locate one it may be helpful.

    Congratulations!! Your excitement is infectious and I love watching it. You should offset the weight of the old batteries with new ones and cool upgrades. The weight difference should give you a lot of wiggle room!! I am so happy the internal electronics are good to go! Frickin epic.

    As far as the 24V battery goes, retrofit that compartment with a hinge attached from the base to plexi glass on top (make sure all through holes drilled for the hinge are sealed with some sort of a gasket) then seal the plexi glass top with a gasket as well (like an o-ring). Also make sure that the seal can withstand the pressure experienced in the sub to the max depth it can reach.

    whatever colour you wrap it in make sure it's bright and contrasts the water. if you have a failure you want to be as visible as possible. I know the guy that helped design these subs and have contacts for other sub builders up here in Canada if you're interested.

    As for the batteries, they can catch on fire quicker in salt water then fresh, and the whole cabin will almost flash burn from the oxygen.

    If there was a way to seal the hatch for getting in and then have a bilge pump below a shallow decking floor you could have a dryish sub. Might be tricky with the air pressure inside the sub once air sealed but I’m sure you could regulate the air pressure with air tanks. Air pressure on the inside is going to be a learning process.

  • @mikeiniowa7779
    @mikeiniowa7779 2 года назад

    Very cool, but just because they work in the dry does not mean all you electrical systems are still sealed and will work under water. I probably would reseal the controls panel and motor lead access or check it good (must be control relays somewhere also). I have worked with an electrician on a fountain pump in a building (we replaced the pump that sprayed up water) and junction box was under water, we had to drain pool and redo. The electrician had some epoxy that was made to seal the box (we opened box and resealed it, so it must come apart). Weight is probably going to be hardest part, if you do not match your old battery weight it may have issue with bouyancy, but you don't need same weight batteries, just add ballast. Also if you work a lot with Batteries wool clothes will not dissolve by battery acid.

    One dude built a 100km e bike by building his own li battery using 1060 cells, an off the shelf bms, and a pelican case sealed with silicone caulk. Maybe that would work well along side all the mods you'll be including. Just keep most of the weight below the deck to avoid throwing off your ballast.
