Some great tips from both guys! Finding where your clients hangout and building relationships has worked for me, even though the payoff could be months or years later. You could say the real pay off is the relationship its self.

this is literally me right now. After getting my first clients, I'm literally just figuring it out as I go along, smartly of course. Also, thank you so much Chris and to all your guests. I was able to charge double in my projects just for months.

it's very old video but it answered my two main questions, 1st how to get first client and that's what I'm doing right now so i feel good that i'm on right path and in last some seconds I dint expect it but thru that comment i got my second answer which pushed me to do whatever I'm doing rn instead of worrying about not having a mentor. thank you futur team & chris.

Once again Chris provides viewers great information to help build careers regardless of the field. Build relationships before the ask is something that many people still have not comprehend. I agree about the faux flattery that turns into hidden intentions. Also, Chris brought up the “Escape from Alcatraz” analogy when transitioning from working for someone to opening your own shop. It takes proper planning, learning everything (not just your job), and transitioning with class (aka not burning bridges). The key thing is to soak up everything about the industry, clients, and business aspects, and your profession. Too many people just do their job and wonder why they are not marketable or launch a failed business. As Marcus Garvey said, “Do what is required of you and remain a slave. Do more than is required and become free.” Overall, common sense advice Chris-style.

I clearly did not have a back up plan when I resigned from my full-time, it was due to covid complications so it was unexpected. I am now trying something for myself but wish I could of prepped for this sooner.

I'm a lucky designer that had my first clients come to me - but when I review this 'luck', the bulk of it was choosing to put my work out there and declare my role and what I do (so to designers out there, leave your portfolio in obvious places and cross your fingers like LinkedIn, it's never a bad idea 😂). To be honest, I believe I am an amateur, and can't throw in things like value-based pricing when I have not gone through more than a year's worth of projects yet. However I will work up my confidence and prices with each individual project. Slowly, but surely!

Don't forget that passion comes from experiences and growth comes from change, which come from experiences different from past ones. Therefore, someone with little experience is most likely extremely limiting their possible reach when staying in the narrow box of current passion. Take whatever you can, every new project possibly something you haven't done before. That was our criterion, running a creative agency for 10 years. As soon as it started to stagnate, it was time to move on. Keep growing!
Yeah, this should be top comment. Honestly, my only passion is paying clients that need work from my skillset. No need to pre-dispose myself to loving or hating work beforehand.

@@getaheadm Well it's daily uncertainty if you constantly grow. But design is creating the future, so uncertainty is something that comes with creating the unknown. It's not for everyone, but for some, it's only way to live :D

Hey Chris, can you talk about deadlines in relation to value based pricing and how you go about negotiating that? Unless there's already a video on it, I remember Jonathan Stark talked about it briefly but a more in depth I guess is what I'm asking for
If the outcome is what you promise, deadlines work against this. ask the client if the deadline is more important than the goal. then build a working time table but know that you may need to work on it longer than expected.

I've been freelancing and recently, me and my collegues decided to start a studio and we've been making conceptual projects to build up our portfolio and showcase our strengths.
Lately, there are some client inquiries asking us for sample works we did from the past that's in the same industry as theirs. And the dilemma is that I don't know whether to answer them 'No' since the studio is new, but if we're gonna base it in our individual work experiences, i also worked fulltime in different creative studios and agencies before, and we actually have some sample works to show based in their industry but i don't know if I want to, because i am not sure if that's legal and i don't want them to hire the studio we worked on in the past and get them instead of us.
So, should we just say "No" and tell them the studio is still new but we can totally do it", or show them our past works from different studios and tell them that "this specific project is not under our studio but here's what we are capable of"? It's stressing me out because it feels like they're looking for a proof which is understandable but how should i approach it in a nice, safe and right way without violating any rules. Haha, hopefully someone answer this, and thank you in advance.
Thought I’d hop in here an add my own experience with this. I would create “mock” case studies. It doesn’t have to be in the exact same industry as your clients, but your case studies should reflect your range of skills and services your studio can offer your clients. How will your clients benefit from your studios services? My personal favourite is create a before and after upgrade.
Started doing graphics full time recently, it started as a hobby now i want to do it as a career
