  • On February 18th, 1876 Mrs. Wordsworth sat down and wrote a letter to her daughter, which was later published in The Sailors’ Magazine and Seaman’s Friend, it included the following statements: “I was sick the whole way, and if the sickness stopped, I had nausea. I could not eat, I loathed everything; and when we got to the line, ‘low fever’ set in. In short, I thought I should never reach New Zealand, though Captain McDonald showed great skill in medicine and was exceedingly kind and attentive. On one occasion, curiously enough, he jokingly threatened that if I did not get better soon, he would land me on the “Twelve Apostles”, little thinking then, poor man, how soon his words were to come true.”

A start of the voyage with a drunken mutiny that required the passengers to put down should have been we are returning to Port now, and that was after the let's take candles past gunpowder....

We are in complete agreement, especially when by the captain's own admission they had nearly blown up the ship. They found burnt candle ends next to gun powder barrels.

Two things RUclips have taught me:
Don't jump on the first life boat.
Don't continue past 2pm if summiting Everest

That's weird: I'm sitting just down the road from Dundee. Serendipity.

Had the ship not wrecked I wonder what level of discounted fare a passenger would receive for having to help put down a mutiny and handle the sails.

Good grief! Where did they recruit this crew? The local penitentiary? Makes me wonder how many of those civilian sailing ships were crewed by drunken sods.

I found it interesting the one guy even back then knew that the first lifeboat launched wasn’t necessarily the best to be on. Seems to be the case in most ship wrecks.

I am very curious if Charles Wordsworth had just read a lot about shipwrecks and reached his own conclusion about the first lifeboat, or if it was a more widely held opinion. It's the first time I have ever seen it called out in an account.
As for the crew, I suspect that they were very lucky that the wreck and subsequent events meant that all past deeds were forgiven.
