  • Cnc lathe using parting tool to remove stock. Video shows turning tool and parting tool having a race and it is pretty close .
A little history of these lathes
Manufactured by Hercus in South Australia, these lathes were sold to many educational facilities and to countries all over the world. They were sold in the USA under the name of Rockford Pro 2000. An industrial version of the PC200 is the Novim, which comes with an industrial enclosure for coolant capture.
The lathes began as a “Computurn” model which used electronics by a company called ANCA. These lathes were stand alone cnc lathes, a small version of what might be found in industry.
These were replaced by lathes which had a Hercus control system and used an interface card in a desktop PC to connect with, and control the lathe.
These lathes used the same castings but their appearance was much changed as they no longer contained all the controls for the lathe. These were now all in the PC, apart from a small Pendant which offered some controls when in Manual mode.
Early PC200 models used a CAD/CAM software that ran in DOS on a PC that had an ISA slot (long discontinued on new PCs) and had analogue electronics. The 8 tool turret option on these lathe was operated by a small motor and gearbox and used shot pins to lock the tool in position.
As PC operating systems were upgraded, Hercus released Windows CAD/CAM software. These machines still ran analogue electronics. The last version of the machine used digital electronics and used 32 bit Windows based CAD/CAM. Both these machines used a turret with a motor and worm and worm wheel drive. Options for all these lathes included a Leader air chuck with no through hole, an air operated collet chuck, a 8 position tool turret, a tailstock, a QC tool post and a coolant pump.

Ha! Well, I just went back to your last video and watched it again, just to spite youtube! Thanks for your content, it's always interesting.

love all your videos. the thumbnail and the title are all the algo wants to look at anymore.

Thank you, really don’t care what yt looks at but if I don’t get put in front of folks they will not see it. I just can’t be bothered making videos no one gets to see. Far too much effort goes into it.

Great one Nigel I for one missed the narration

Thanks Colin, I will be looking at putting less work into my videos. Less editing and if I do a narration, just ramble on and not try to be so correct. It is just so difficult to think of what you want to say, while saying the previous bit!

I love all your videos Nigel. The narration helps me as my eyes struggle sometimes with the colors on the screen so not having to read is handy. Either way you choose to upload content is appreciated for the time and effort it must take ;) Thank you, Stephen.

Hi Stephen perhaps I just try too hard to get it right. I am not a natural when it comes to narration, perhaps I should just ramble on and do it in fewer takes. Visually, I use white text with a purple outline for my captions and it seems to me, to work well on any colour background. Is there a better colour combination do you think? Nigel

Subtitles are okay with me, I also very much enjoy your narration. It's a shame RUclips is messing you about, I don't understand how the algorithms work! My video's are all subtitled, mainly because I've heard my voice! 😂😂

Hi, it took a lot of persuasion by a friend to convince me to add narration to my videos. I had also heard my own voice and wondered who was talking! LOL. A number of the folks who watch, seem to appreciate the narration. It is not something that can easily be done at the time of machining as the machines make too much noise. I just need to find a way to make narration less onerous. I am going to try just talking without striving to get it "right" as much as I do. May include a lot of Umms and Ahhs, will just have to see how it goes. Thanks for your comment, oh and as for the Algorithm, we are not supposed to understand it. LOL

Subtitles are fine I think. I don't use narration in my videos because I suck at it and I'd rather be doing or showing something useful 😂

Thank you. Just no room left on yt it seems. A month ago, I put up a short on my other channel, it has had 3 views!
I too suck at narration which is why I have to do so many takes to string it together. I am unable to say one thing while I am thinking about the next thing to say. I think I will try to be less critical and just keep talking and see what happens. Views I am getting lately just don’t justify the effort I have been putting in.

I'm slowly growing the need for at least a small manual lathe but I'm not sure if I am ready to get myself into a new topic yet...

    Hello Nigel,
RUclips seems to have some crazy logic and quite inconsistent on how it treats videos (well in my experience). Now I just make stuff that I want.
    Take care.

Hi Paul, I agree about yt. I think I will adopt the same attitude. Still make videos, but do a bit less editing and narration.

It's bad that we cannot ever figure out what works for RUclips and what doesn't without finding out after the fact.

We are not supposed to know how YT works. LOL But losing the audio is just weird.

RUclips sure has some funny things going on these days , I'm not really sure why they are making things difficult for the smaller guys .

My last 2 videos rank 8 and 10 out of my last 10 uploads. Not very encouraging. I may end up doing little editing etc and and just consider an upload to be my own record of what I did.

Maybe the problem is that CAD is boring? I have zero interest in CAD/CAM. But I really enjoy machining /cnc but not programming.
See what your highest veiw videos are and keep doing ones like that. If you are only interested in viewing numbers.

Hi Thanks for your comment. The real problem was RUclips just not showing the thumbnail to enough folks. I will be changing the way I produce videos. I need to be able to produce them more easily, they take too much effort at the moment
