      it definitely looks that way from this, and notice djokovic tried to do it in the clip vs de minaur in the united match and blew it out you could tell as soon as he hit it its not in his repetoire like it is/was for Federer/Nadal. Nadal seems to really get the punch into this out of any as he's put on the muscle in his later years.

      to be honest he gets great angles into his shots with his body movement and as long as he stays fit with his weight later into his years I dont see why he cant make the case this season.

      @@frenchflair7699 True and false at the same time. Nadal already has a degenerative condition called Muller Weiss Syndrome in his left foot which puts additional strain on his foot and knee and hips.. True his playing style is brutal but so is Novak's but he has been injured far less...

    scary how good this guy is when he isn't hindered with injury... glad to see him move so well and he seems to have the confidence as well. incredible considering such a long break. if he prevents injury he's a serious contender again i reckon

      we will only see how strong he really is when he plays against the top ten players and especially against Alcaraz and Djokovic. You can't say anything about Nadal's actual form against a weak opponent.

      @@supernemesis5244 of course you can, the way he moves, his shot choices, reaction after winning/losing points all factor in. Of course you can't be certain but the fact that he seems to be moving without pain or problems, he seems to play consistent and his mindset is good. You can't predict how he will fare against Alcaraz or Djokovic but you can definitely see how his form is. The fact that you can only judge him after playing the best players in the world seem to indicate that you still expect him to be nr3 anyway. After a year of absence, that's amazing standards

    So often in the last few years Nadal and Djokovic exchange seasons. Nadal was good in 17, then Novak in 18, then Nadal in 19, then both of them were 50-50 in 20, Djokovic in 21, Nadal in 22, Djokovic in 23. You know what is happening this year already.

    What is amazing about Nadal is that he doesn't go for fine margins: he hits the ball well within the court and way over the net. It's just his relentless consistency + inventive angles that wear people down.

      Unfortunately That's also his problem on hardcourt against Djokovic. Nadal plays the ball too short and against Djokovic on hardcourt that is a death sentence.

    Whats amazes me is that he is playing without doubts, building the points fast and aggressively, like he was all the year on tour... And his backhand and serve look very good too. He is amazing.

    I am an avid Novak fan, but I have to admire and recognise Nadal as the comeback King. None can rival him in that realm, more so especially coming after such a long lay off - not even Novak. To get into his groove seamlessly is unparalleled. My hats off to him.

    The running forehand wrist-shot at 0:44 shows such great defence when he was caught out of position. It gets so deep to the backhand corner and hangs in the air long enough for Nadal to recover.

    @3:18 The disguise - Carlos can still learn a thing or two from Nadal in terms of disguise and placement, the ability to disguise shots, distribute the game and place the ball. It is great to see Rafa play again healthy. Both his forehand and backhand motions can be adjusted with a shortened or extra long stride last second to change direction.

Nice backhand volley at 2:35 Nice get on a drop shot and he places a perfect backhand pass at 3:27... And another great backhand winner on match point at 3:56.

      Nah, that's not the case, but his shot selection is getting better each year, while movement is declining. However, his anticipation is along with Novak the best of all time so movement won't really be a problem even at 37. He knows where the ball is going. Nadal if healthy will have an amazing 2024.

      He's hitting the ball harder but not moving that well and that will affect him when playing against bigger offensive players, hopefully he gets better 🙏

      @@AlmstfamI agree, he’s moving OK though. I think what’s most important is that he closes rallies out and doesn’t get caught into a game of rallying. He has big shots, needs to paint lines and conserve energy. It is incredibly HOT here in Australia at the moment, the humidity is insane, long 5 setters in a big tournament will definitely have an impact.

    I love the way Rafa keeps coming back each time. He really makes sure he is at 100 %. That proves he has a lot of respect for his body, his mind, his team and his fans.

He is already in third round. And he will still get seriously tested if he manages to reach far enough to play Dimitrov and Rune.

    As a neutral fan, I've got to say Rafa is incredible. I don't think people realize how rare it is to be away from the game for 12 months and to just roll in and win his opening matches pretty comfortably, even against players ranked outside the top 50. He's probably not ready to beat top 5 players yet, but if he stays healthy, he'll be the favourite for all the events during the clay court swing

    He has the talent so when he is fit, he is a contender for the big titles with of course Novak and also Alcaraz and Medvedev and Sinner. Nadal is on an adrenalin rush, being finally back and being fit again.

    Rafa is getting matches and he is playing at a high level. Lets see he how he fares against top 30 players and his consistency day in-day out, specially with longer matches under his belt. If he can get some consistency there, stay injury free during prolonged periods of time + work on his return (specially his forehand return), he will be again top 10 or top 5 at the end of the year + have many chances at 1000 masters and GS titles ;)
