    The fact that Bob Hoskins didn’t win the Oscar that year and that Jeff Goldblum wasn’t even nominated for his performance in “The Fly” shows that you should never take the Best Actor award seriously.

      No. It shouldn't.
      Bob should've won but they had to give it to Newman, for fucking up and not giving him one in 1961.
      Plus, Pacino not winning for godfather 2 cements this award not be taken seriously.

    Watching this movie or in this case scene I can honestly say when you love or care for somebody you can’t see the mind games they are playing with you. I’ve always said fake lovers are the best actors. My first love did something similar. She and her HighSchool sweetheart had broke up after 7 years. He was done with her but she wasn’t over him but she used me to get back at him. In other words she felt he would get jealous if he saw us together. We would pass him sometimes on the street in our cars and every single time she would start dancing to get his attention. I didn’t know it then but she was still in love with him. When she finally realized he wasn’t coming back she started taking it out on me and doing all kinds of things to send me on my way and eventually I did after 3 years. I really loved her and it was hard to breakaway from her which is why the relationship went on longer than it should have.

    I hope you watched the whole film.I don't think the looks of the male lead or awesomeness of the female character matter in this case, it is simply about her leading him on, using him and then ultimately hurting him when he is not needed anymore.

      @Jake Green It was nominated and Bob had won several awards, so the film wasn't being nominated, it was his performance, which transcends the material. It's a lot more nuanced than simply this or that. The Academy gave it to Newman as a sympathy vote. The Academy, then as now, is full of old crusties hanging on for dear life. The fact that Bob didn't win shows the limited and PG rated tastes of people not keeping up with the times, but have immense voting power.

      Because Americans have trouble with any accents from the U.K. that aren't the sort that Cathy Tyson uses here.
      American distributors wanted to dub over Hoskins' voice for either this film or "The Long Good Friday."
      They worried that Americans would have trouble with his accent. And it would affect the box office take.
      The Australian actors in "Mad Max" (a.k.a The Road Warrior in the U.S.) were dubbed over by American actors because U.S. audiences would have found it hard to understand broad Aussie accents. That was around 1980 or so.

      But there's a bit missing at the end where George's daughter shows up and they go somewhere together. That's the happy ending, the love that George finds in his repaired relationship with his daughter.
      "The Crying Game" ends with a similar type of situation, with the main character Fergus telling a story (about himself and his situation) just like George.
      There's a similar shooting by Dil, the "tall, thin, black woman" just like the shooting in this film. Only it's Fergus who goes to prison. There isn't exactly a happy ending, but in C.G. we see that there is a kind of love that is acknowledged by Dil and Fergus (even though he's not gay and had rejected Dil when he found out that "she" is a "he."

      @@stephenhogg6154 That's an interesting interpretation, but it's a realistic film and both actors have been communicating elevated emotion, and elevated emotion makes people unsure what's going on. Pointing a gun at him isn't just possibly shooting him (which I really don't think he would make her feel she "needed" to or she thinks he would), it's telling him to back off about whatever he might do next, he can fight and he briefly got physical with her earlier in the movie: he might get physical with her again just out of frustration with her morals again, and she has zero interest in his shit however much she has fucked up.
      "What, hurt you too" on a straightforward level means be serious, I'm not going to kill you, and it's ironic, she sure was willing to hurt him.

    • @pikkon899
      @pikkon899 Год назад +3

      She only used him to get to her lover. She didn't care about him at all and he found out during this scene, which is why he cried and hit her. She pulls the gun on him twice regardless of what she said. She knew that he loved her and used that to keep him around until this very scene. She showed some remorse at the end but it was too late. This is a story about manipulation. Many things that she said turned out to be lies.
