Music videos and most things back then were filmed in much higher quality it's just that alot people still had slow internet and crt monitors so there was really no need to upload higher quality video on youtube back then.

They switched to digital way too early for music videos, and the cameras while good enough to look almost as good as a film camera on pre-HD screens captured footage that looks horrible on a modern screen. With film you can always go back and grab the original film and get more data out of it and display more of that data than you could in the past to make something that looks good on a modern screen.
