Totally unique song! Those vocals totally had me hooked on the first listen
The song copied to many riffs and screams from songs I heard before. I can't quite pinpoint all of them, but there is nothing unique about this song. It's still catchy though. No hate....
It's the clever catchiness that MAKES this song. As for "copying too many riffs"= Bull-shit, I've been around a while & these guys earned their place on Rock n' Roll's awesome Lists!
Sounds familiar to me
Sounds like the band Sweet
My wife hated this song when it came out. We are divorced now. Thank you The Darkness!!!!!!!
I guess you and her didn't believe in a thing called love.
I love a story with a happy ending. 👍
It was the song my wife and I walked out to at our wedding.
We are divorced now too.
@@pataker7875 B's don't get this bad ass song!
This was my first dance song.
Justin is hilarious. Back when they were big he said that people were accusing him of wearing a wig. And his response was: "If I did I would have picked a better one than this."
remember the song bald?
😂
He has a awesome youtube channel too. Lots of stories to tell, really nice fella.
This was the song Bill and Ted were really looking for.
Fuck. So true
Truth!
I used to play this song and sing along with it all the time while driving my Toyota pickup, windows down, full blast, the summer of 2004. On one occasion, I drove to the bank to deposit my paycheck but, after arriving there, I stayed in the truck because this song was still playing, I was still singing it, and I just HAD to finish the song! As I was singing at the top of my lungs, I looked over to the car parked beside me and I saw two girls with a guy in that car. The girls looked on puzzled and then they started to giggle, but the guy ran out of the car and he air-guitared and head-banged the rest of the song in front of my truck, at the bank's entrance, as I continued to burn my lungs out and blister my throat hitting those high notes until we finished the song! Then we just acknowledged each other with a slight nod and moved on with our regular lives, never to see each other again.....
No doubt we got privately ridiculed by some that afternoon at the bank, but I still don't care, because that warm summer afternoon, for just less than a minute's worth of time, two complete strangers joined their rock-and-roll superpowers to save that parking lot from the depths of dullness and we elevated it to the heights of the Darkness.......
Rock and roll brother. I can picture it in my mind now.
That story is as rock n roll as it gets!!! Brilliant, mate!!
Brilliant story.
Rock and roll!!!!
As I read this , it played out in my head . Awesome story .
That Darkness was a giant breath of fresh air after the non-rock of the late 90s. It was like the hangover had finally lifted.
Yeah and it all Started with Monster Magnet in 98 with their album Powertrip then buckcherry in 99 and then The Darkness in 2002 we all saw a 70s rock throwback thing going and nowadays we are seeing it again with Ghost, Lucifer, Orchid and Greta Van Fleet
Dudes, i totally agree. After G'n'R dropping the ball when Metallica frontman James Hetfield stepped into a pyro, and Axl got uppity, and lost the people, giving rise to pop and hip hop.
So True!!!
steel panther
Another band to check out from that period that started to bring back rock was New American Shame from 1999. Check out the tracks “Under It All,” and “American Shame.” Both seriously rock.
This band are still legendary. Justin has a very humourous youtube channel himself, analysing new music - worth a look!
Currently binging it
I've been watching it for a few weeks now, very entertaining
Your absolutely right! Have become a fan of his since finding his channel.
Justin Hawkins rides again....again.
Permission to Land is one of the best debut albums in my opinion, endless catchy riffs and hooks, and equally catchy tongue in cheek lyrics.
"The way she moves moves me to write bad poetry" My favorite line of all time
I still listen to the CD in my car on road trips and sing as loud az as I can!
The Darkness definitely deserve more love.
Their song Open Fire is one of my all time favorites. It kicks so much ass you can't help but hit the replay button over and over.
The album 'The Last of Our Kind' is probably their second-best album, after their first.
That whole album is awesome. i know they were classified as a 'novelty' band because of the crazy outfits and wacky videos, but the songwriting and musicianship was as good as any modern hard rock band you can name.
They are SO UNDERRATED! Truly a great album!
They're still putting out great music. 'Last Of Our Kind' in 2015 is one of the best rock albums of the decade and (the oddly prophetically titled) 'Easter Is Cancelled' from 2019 is almost as incredible.
@@braytonwright6011 last of our kind is a great album! Hot cakes is great as well!
The Wart is always growing on me LOL's
@@waxman9550 😆
They aren't underrated though.
When I first heard the song on radio I smiled and laughed thinking back to my youth of 70’s and 80’s. When I saw the video I was even happier think back to the glory days of MTV. It’s not only a great song, but a love letter to the artists and fans who made and grew up listening to classic rock.
Exactly, well said
The Darkness really grew on me..
First band in that time period that brought guitar solos back to mainstream rock while everyone else thought they were not needed.
I tell everybody that brings them up - that they brought back a lot of things. hard to believe guitar solos were considered "gay" back then
they never left
KILLER guitar solos.
I FRIGGIN LOVE The Darkness!!
When I first heard this song in 2003 thought, "How long has this song been out?"
When I found that it was new I was blown away and encouraged.
Hard Rock is not dead. This band proves it.
Good rock bands that are true to the genre are few and far between ... and worth looking for.
Jewels they are ... jewels.
Exactly same here 😅❤ just literally found it again now and belted it out in a quiet (whisper) ballad to myself in my room 3x before coming to this video.
- I believe in a thing called love 💕 can live in my head rent free
Damn, 2 years late to THIS!? The Darkness we're a breath of fresh air mixed with stale cigarettes, one-piece Spanx and pure talent! Justin's voice was and STILL IS out of this world!
This song blew me away the second I heard it. Went home, plugged in the Les Paul, and didn’t put it down until I could play it. Its the ultimate “driving tune”, windows down, volume up and singing loud and proud!
Justin, describing the function of a well-constructed bridge:
"Find things that rub the spikes off the porcupine. The porcupine of silliness becomes a much more coiffured rodent. It can get up any drainpipe you like." That man is brilliant!
Man. I remember when this song came out back in 2003. I honestly thought there might be a glam rock renaissance back then. Too bad.
The Darkness has it all, I love that band, Justin Hawkins is brilliant
I love the Professor's interviewing style: ask a question and then get out of the way and let them keep talking if they're interesting. Brilliant. Justin Hawkins now has his own RUclips channel and he's reverted back to his classic rock star look. The teeth look amazing now, as well.
The guitar intro and solo from Love is Only a Feeling is, IMHO, two of the best guitar solos of all time. They aren't complicated, but whenever I hear them, my mind is immediately happy.
I hadn't even heard the song yet but was at Best Buy and saw the album cover and just bought it on a whim. Was totally blown away by the entire album front to back.
Best live band I’ve ever seen. Let the snark begin, but I stand by it.
me too, they are fantastic live.
Wonderful live show!
catch marty stuart and the fabulous superlatives live.
I haven't seen them live, but everyone I know that has seen them, they all say the same. .
Crazy good love band
Very underrated guitarists, catchy as hell song.
They're both great players 👍🤘
They were both voted best guitarist of 2019 by musicradar. Underrated guitarists they are not.
Man I am embarrassed to say that I just discovered The Darkness! I’m at a loss as to how they never grabbed my attention, because I am completely enamored with them now! Justin Hawkins’ RUclips channel is a gold mine, and he is an amazing front man as well as a great writer and guitarist. Heart Explodes is my new favorite song, and I can’t get it out of my head.
Similar. I wasn’t in the best place back when it came out and never looked into the band. But that song is so good that even though I only heard it the one time, I would randomly start singing it over the past 19 years. Found the JHRA RUclips channel earlier this year and have been listening to The Darkness just about every day since. Every single album is ridiculously good!!
That album, Permission to Land… is one of the best albums in the last 25 years. Period. Absolute bangers top to bottom. I hadn’t listened to it or thought about my ex girlfriend, the person I first discovered that album with…in over 20 years. That summer was one of the best years of my young life and permission to land was the soundtrack to it 🙏
dan and justin are two of the best musicians in rock, I love the darkness
I ADORE The Darkness. Great band & great chaps.
Rufus "Tiger" Taylor, son of Roger Taylor of Queen is now in their drummer. They've gotten even better. Check out their cover of Radiohead's Street spirit (Fade out)
Does he live inside their drummer? Like a tapeworm?
Their Radiohead Street Spirit cover is amazing!
@@mysterymccarthy6851 watch the live show on RUclips from 2019. Rufus plays drums and adds his flavor but they do "while my guitar gently weeps" in the middle. Insane.
that sounds uncomfortable
Barbarian, Japanese Prisoner of Love, Buccaneers of Hispaniola, Mighty Wings, Solid Gold, Easter is Cancelled, Barbarian, Barbarian, so many epic rock tracks.
When I first heard the song, I loved the scorching riff and it took me awhile to like the falsetto singing, and then the song grew on me rather rapidly and this is a great song to crank up.
One of the worlds most underrated rock bands
The Hawkins brothers have some of the best straight ahead rock and roll guitar tone out there. Great band!
I worked at Tower Records when The Darkness appeared. It was total Bowie Glam at full blast. Glam and the flash of Hair Metal kicked up to eleven.
"I Believe in a Thing called Love" is hooks galore, a unique vocal, and two tons of fun. When I first heard this song, my comment was, "These guy could have opened for Def Leppard in 1987."
In 1988, I was 16 and had a Def Leppard "in the round" poster on my bedroom wall.
totally hooked when i first heard this. the riffs, the over the top falsetto pulled me right in.
The first time I heard this I thought "YES!! Rock ain't dead."
It's like take Spinal Tap as a starting point, add afterburners, then press PLAY.
BRILLIANT!
I remember that being a song that when it came out, someone would always throw it on at a party, and people would go crazy - scream-singing, dancing around. It was the best. Good times
Hearing the song was just pure joy. So fun, so f-ing unique. The video was mesmerizing, slightly cringy but absolutely perfect. This song could drop 30 years from now & go straight to #1. Great interview!
I had a radio show at Providence College in 2004 and picked these guys out of the add bin. Played Friday night, loved it, went back and played the whole damn album! Growing on Me, Love on the Rocks, Love is Only a Feeling, Black Shuck, this album has so many hits. Became my favorite band of all time, ive seen them so many times amazing live band!
I was a grad student at PC at that time and loved that song! And I was in my 50's! Rock on. I'm 65 now and still love it!
Two incredible guitar players! It was so refreshing to hear a rock song and not detuned chugging. I love how these guys are so serious about never taking themselves too serious.
I really loved(and still love) this song. This song really did bring back the retro vibe before we knew what it was. And it's a lense into the 80s that time. I still sing the chorus out loud in my house though my wife looks at me like I'm making it all up lol
This song instantly puts a smile on my face. When I’ve seen them live and they put on such an amazing show and sound incredible. Permission to land is one of my favourite albums
They are local to me, I've seen them live a few times and that song is killer. I own all their albums on vinyl and have a 7" single signed by Justin from his other short lived band HOTLEG
I have been eternally unsuccessful in finding a copy of One Way Ticket on wax 😩
Yew's a flatlander, eh? Me tew! Keep yews a troshin', buh... and keep yews a rockin'! Dem Darkness bors still hent got the respeck dey and dare moogits are roitly dew!
@@peppermintspacecapsule9898 HaHa! You talk exactly like my Dad does, he's from Lowestoft too! 😂
Don’t forget The Stone Gods mate, Dan’s offshoot band when Justin left for a while. They were epic.
@@blackhuffer6831 I think you’ll find it’s pronounced “Lew-Stuff” my mate.
Have caught The Darkness 5 times over here in Scotland. They are a great live band and I've been lucky enough to meet them twice, friendly and very funny.
I've really enjoyed their last 3 albums of their renaissance. Classic rock 😁🤟
Absolutely fantastic live show, if you haven't seen them yet and even if you don't know them well you will 100% enjoy it!
Permission to Land is one of my favourite albums of the millennium.
'Love on the Rocks' is one of the best live show closers I've ever seen.
Love them! Can’t believe it’s 20 years since release. Sounds better than ever ❤
Great song! Greater band!! And they’re still delivering outstanding rock and roll.
I love their metal remake of Radiohead's Street Spirit. Check out the live version here on YT. I think they finally recorded a studio version on their latest album but the live version slays.
I have to admit that I never listened to Radiohead until Justin talked about their record The Bends.
And you’re right, that live version on here is damn good.
I love them, I never miss them when they tour, I even managed to get my wife into their music. Such an underrated band. Anyone that is into music and loves going to watch bands live need to make sure they see The Darkness doing what they do best.
I will never forget the first time I heard this song, I was 12 & my first musical influences were Aerosmith, Queen, Meat Loaf & getting to understand their influences I really appreciate it. Also love Justin’s RUclips channel.
"GUITAR!" is both the funniest and the most awesome yelps in rock history.
I first saw a
RUclips video last night and couldn't figure out if these guys were any good. As it turned out I binge watched all their songs and videos for a couple of hours . I love these guys!
I remember my first time hearing it. I was in the work truck and that opening riff had me hooked. Took me ages to realise that it was a new song and not something from the archives somewhere that I just hadn't heard before. Totally unique. Totally Brilliant
This song is literally what made me pick up and learn the guitar damn near 20 years ago. I quite literally owe my livelihood to this song and band.
I wish I could go back in time and listen to that song for the first time again. Truly one of the greatest rock songs of this century.
Extremely big compliment when the Band says they like your cover of their songs
Loved this song from first listen. When they toured for the Hot Cakes album I was able to catch them in Seattle. They are definitely a band that can back it up live, and Justin was being carried through the crowd, riding on a security guard’s shoulders while shredding on the guitar. He was carried right by me, close enough to touch him and get a good pic up close.
Hell of a concert!
The Darkness: If AC/DC and Queen had a love child
?
@@paulmcdonough1093 he means the sound is a combination of the two bands.
Anyone who hasn't seen The Darkness live is not living.
@@ChrisSztybel
Haha yes
I remember when the song first came out someone described them as "like gay AC/DC, or straight Queen"
I first heard this song and immediately fell in love with it. It harkened back to my heyday in the late 70’s and 80’s. Awesome!
I heard this song and loved the video. I bought the CD thinking that the rest of it would be jokey, but Permission to Land became one of my all time favorite albums.
Definitely one of the best rock songs of the decade and century (so far). So catchy. I was hooked on first listen. 🔥🎸
A great band with great song writing, hooks, musicianship, and a lot of fun. Harkens back to Slade, the rockier songs of Queen, and the killer riffs of AC DC.
I was 13 when this song came out like he was saying it was a dismal time for music. The darkness shook the definition of normal for everyone with this song, and it was super memorable for me! and my friends during that time where nothing seemed interesting, this song caught our attention.
I really like Justin. His channel is a lot of fun and he seems like a genuine guy
I remember those times...this song was an oasis in the desert...gave my ears a tickle they had been craving for awhile. Love the Darkness!
This song is my go to 'Restore my will to live' tune. I've listened to it ALOT in 2020..
Aaaaaah the Hawkins brothers.. sigh ❤ ^wistful frothing^
When this came out I was like what am I listening to? it had so many elements to it that there was no way that it should have worked and yet here it is. I love the song and have recently rediscovered it and even found Justin's RUclips Channel which was an awesome surprise and yes it is on so many lists. The one I found it on was the top 10 hardest songs to sing. The Darkness is one of the best awe inspiring and jaw droppingly amazing bands out there. I have liked them ever since. And seeing Justin on his channel is even more awesome. He is funny and down to earth and just an all round pleasure to listen to. Thanks for having them on and telling the story of how I believe in a thing called love came to be.
The first time I heard this track I was driving my van and had to pull over to listen. I sat in a layby thinking whow! rock is back at last. The Darkness have been one of my favourite bands ever since!
It was great to hear unabashedly rock & roll music again with great power chords ! Like Bang A Gong - Get It On. Fun music for fun people.
exactly! it really stood out.
Permission To Land was such a fresh breath of Rock N Roll air when it landed here!! A True Rock Masterpiece!
PLAY LOUD! 🎸🤘🏼💥
Plays like a Greatest Hits album. So many solid tracks.
I was in middle school and every morning that song would come on mtv as I was getting ready to head out. But my grandson loved it
I was in 3rd grade when this song came out, my dad showed me the music video. This song will always have a place rent rlfree in my head forever!
Love that you’re covering early aughts rock. I remember how The Darkness’ song and Jet’s singles “Are you gonna be my girl” and “Cold hard b!tch” pumped life into rock in 2004.
The song was huge and still popular but I think the band is very underappreciated. All their releases are worth checking out even the live-album is quite good. They do have some standard songs that could be from just about any rock band but I would say 70 % are very memorable, fun and rocking. The new albums doesn't seem to reach beyond their core fanbase which is a shame. The latest album "Easter Is Cancelled" is highly recommended!
I remember getting ready for work one morning on an early Monday morning in 03. We had the TV on and by chance, this song/video was playing. It was like nothing I'd seen or heard. It was just amazing. It was fun, energetic, catchy, and all of the above. Unfortunately, my life was so busy at the time, they kind of faded away... for nearly 2 decades. :(
Enter: 2022 and Justin Hawkins Rides Again shows up as a recommendation to watch. I'm like "Hey, that guy looks familiar!" "It's the guy from that band!" I was hooked. Justin is simply hilarious, witty, and talented and his love for music shows. After that, my love for their music was not only rekindled, it was set ablaze.
2022 has been a difficult year for our family but The Darkness has helped to shine a light on it. Cheers!
It was the Marshall cab mountain behind the guitar solo. When I saw that, as a guitarist who had grown up on a diet of flashy guitar solos, I nearly fell to the floor in laughter... they nailed it!
It's funny how you were talking about hearing a song that you dont expect to hear for the first time. I remember I was in high school, watching MTV when they still played some music videos late at night and this song came on and instantly blew me away.
This album (permission to land) was the soundtrack to my first year at uni - carefree, silly and just really great tunes and playing. Saw them live a few years ago and they are unbelievable. If you get the chance, go and see them and they will deliver!
I saw the Darkness when they were the opening act for Def Leppard back in 2003. It was right before I Believe became a big hit. I remember getting into Brixton Academy and wondering who the hell these guys were. Their stage act involved Justin wearing his cat suit under his trousers and changing into it mid-set.
My most vivid memory of that night, though, was when Justin got on a roadie’s shoulders and got carried through the crowd while playing the guitar solo to Love on the Rocks (With No Ice). He got from one side of the pit to the other, accepted a cigarette from someone in the crowd, smoked it, got up on stage, and finished the song. I was blown away.
I listened to this song on repeat for the weeks leading up to my wedding (4 years ago.) It's eccentric and rock n roll vibes just brings the giddy joy and love right back to my heart and soul whenever I hear it.
Love them. Very tongue in cheek but a real good band. Love is only a feeling is my favourite track of theirs. It’s such a good song with a mega riff and some lovely vocals and a great bit of soloing too.
Hot Cakes is one of the best albums by any band, period.
I remember when I saw the video for the first time that I caught myself smiling because it reminded me of growing up during the 80's
Man oh man. When my workmates and I first discovered that video on the web, we would play it on repeat in the office with the speakers blaring. Good times
I was working at Circuit City and they played this video on contestant rotation
Also...you should interview Rick Beato
"Friday Night" also a great and catchy song from The Darkness
Hey you... Do you remember me...?
True artists.. Whole package..If you’re not a fan you are seriously missing out!!
Love the Darkness. The voice isn't for everyone but their music is phenomenal. They aren't a 1 hit wonder, they have 6 albums out now and still tour. One of my favorite bands.
We need a interview with Interpol, the strokes or queens of the stone age, we love this channel 😎😎
yessss
This album is a “ go to “ for an emotional roller coaster ride that leaves you questioning the way you view your own reality ..
Thank You for Spotlighting The Darkness & this brilliant song.Tonight they played in My country New Zealand ..but I couldn't get there..I'm so gutted. They have many great songs one called 'Bavarian' is My current favorite.
Can't believe it's been 19 years since "Permission To Land" was released. The first time I heard The Darkness I was hooked.
LOVE THE DARKNESS!!!!!
I remember hearing this for the first time. I couldn’t believe this was a new song. I saw them live soon after, and it was fantastic! I sing tenor and falsetto, and it was nice to have a song like that on the radio to sing along with.
I saw them on their Permission to Land tour in Missouri! By far the LOUDEST concert I have ever been too!😆
@@greengoog22 I saw them on that tour, also. It was VERY loud.

I've been looking for this song for years cause I loved it when it first came out. It was awesome to hear rock n roll again after all the grunge that was playing. I'm so glad to find this band again!!!
Love this band! Justin is a super talented musician.
Love is Only a Feeling..............their best song
Givin' Up
Such a great song!!!
I had to laugh when they put "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" right before "Love Is Only A Feeling". Things must have gone sour quick! They definitely have a great sense of humor. Love Is Only A Feeling really is a legit good song, you are correct.

I am so happy this channel exists. It throws me back when music had depth and soul and your voice will soon become iconic like many others that came before you.
I love that The Darkness don't take their music/lyrics too seriously. I think that's important in Rock and Roll.
