It's called perspective!!! The fact that there are not a tonne of black women authors means that the story is told with a different slant, not necessarily the plot but the carefully chosen and explored themes.
So yes, it matters that she is a black woman. Yes, that's not necessarily what makes her a good writer, but introduces a take on things that we don't get from the traditional fantasy POV.
You don't need to ignore our blackness to recognise us as being okay at some things, so when someone says "good to read a perspective from a black woman", it's valid. Just by the way, you dont need to know or even respect such a view/feeling, especially if you can't relate, but it would be tragically ironic if you didn't since one of the core themes of the trilogy DEALS WITH EXACTLY THIS!!!
I wouldn‘t describe Jemisin in this books as „okay at some things“, because I know Jemisin is amazing at this. I heard about Jemisin in an article which was about „there are not many women writing fantasy, Black people are also ignored, hey look, this is N.K. Jemisin who writes fantasy“. But the thing which is fascinating me about this trilogy rather includes how it deals with oppression, how it uses both racism and anti-queerness as the narrative of the oppression, how it let‘s the characters be powerful and devastated at the same time, how the characters past really is a part of them in a meaningful way, what it says about history and, definitly not last, the great worldbuilding.
And do you think there was a need for it? I say no

I just started the Fifth Season today. I’m 100 pages in and absolutely loving it.

I am reading fantasy for 30 years and I must say that Broken Earth is one of my favorite book series.

I've just read your 1st book of the Broken Earth trilogy. Gave it 5 * it was magnificent. So I bought the other 2. Your 1st book was edited in Portugal, and your publisher is the best Portuguese publisher, they don't publish fantasy, only classics like Dickens, Tolstoy, Brontê and so on. So I bought it. Congrats I loved it.
Just finished The Stone Sky and the emptiness of the series is gonna be hard to fill

I love N.K. Jemisin! She just inspires me so much. I can't wait to read the last installment in the broken earth trilogy, I'm currently re-reading the first two in preparation. I also bought the Hundred Thousand Kingdom series and am eager to read that as well.

I'm on the third book now, really enjoying it. A little annoying that the map at the front of the book and the glossary at the back is just re-used from the first book but never updated with new content in the second and third books. I hope that's an oversight that's dealt with in later editions, it's a minor annoyance in an otherwise seminal trilogy.

My daughter offered me your trilogy for my birthday; I just finished The Fifth Season and starting the Obelix Gate. As an artist myself the “visual” is a never ending interpretation... I wish however that I could better describe the Tora as an image. Perhaps since it is an energy rather than a 3D element, is the reason why? Time to open up my pineal gland, 😉 Maybe you can help me with that since I could not find “Tora” in the Appendix. Love to see your work on the big screen one day; it certainly follows what the “Powers-at-be” have planned! Merci 🙂

Her comment about authors losing some enthusiasm during the hard work of writing helps explain why some books and very many films which start very strong finish very weakly. ...and especially TV series.
That's not necessarily the case. Normally when authors and screen writers lose enthusiasm they give up, especially if they lack the self-taught discipline needed to be a writer. There's many writers who have published beloved books who lost enthusiasm half way through and the book or script never dipped in quality, because they have the self-discipline to keep the quality consistent. They understand that the one job of a writer is to entertain the reader/audience. That is the the only real job of a writer, nothing else. It's a shame we don't get many new writers like that now.
I am ashamed to admit I never heard of her until today when I read she won the Hugo for the third time in a row. Wow! That's remarkable to say the least! I am gonna try and read the first book in her trilogy and see if I like her stuff.
there is literally no better novel writer in the genre at the moment.

I can't relate at all though; I loved it from the first page.
We don't need "more female" or "more black" anything, we need people to be supportive and stop telling others they can't do things because of their gender or race. Neither of those have any bearing on most things you can do, including storytelling. The only relevance of her race and gender is the experiences she's had, as a result of racism and sexism, and being made to feel less than.
It's nice to read books by authors you might be able to relate to through similar life experiences.

Promoting an internet bully, nice. NK Jemisin punches down at people on social media and has no remorse. Her writing is mediocre at best, too.
2nd person is intolerable. 5th Season is BBB (boring beyond belief). I bought this book based on the Hugo win and it was incredibly disappointing. This is what happens when awards are given based on politics instead of merit.
Good thing no-one cares about your opinion.
Love the book. It is perfect. She is a great writer. . But why always talking about the fact that she is a woman and black? Keeps dragging after a while. Is it typical American? Who cares. She is a person like another..
It's important because it's what makes her perspective fresh in the genre. It is not the focus, but the book explores themes of how oppressed people internalise social messaging about themselves. So yes, it matters.
It would probably matter less if the author did not explore these themes in a way that makes it obvious that she is pulling from her experiences as a black woman. If you miss that, you do miss at least some of the beauty behind the themes she chooses to explore.
It may even be relevant to you in many other contexts, including if you are LGBTIQA+ or poor or any other thing that society chooses to tear up about you.
I loved the books before I even knew anything else about the author. I had no clue she was black... loving the books was the whole reason I decided to look her up. I don't agree with this ridiculous idea that there are oh-so-many parallels with the real world, but the dumb "politics" behind it aren't going to stop me from rereading these amazing books over and over.

@@joachimoyalegan6573 Absolutely. It's currently my favorite series. Every little detail in it is there for a reason, and connects to the overall plot, right down to the narration style.
It has a variety of lovable, INTERESTING characters who aren't your generic do-gooders, combined with some A+ world building, and very quotable lines. I'd definitely recommend it.
She has written an entire explanation for this. It is very important which is why it is so often mentioned.
But DID you wash your hands? All the greatest authors hate the fact that they are authors. Do you hate that you're an author or do you hate something else about yourself?
