  • Wishfully Busy Shikigami
    Ran's a bit more complex to play as compared to what's come before her, but ultimately she's a very strong character. Her aura's similar to Sanae, but with pros and cons. It's fairly large and is focused around her, and it comes out instantly this time to boot, however it's cross shaped, so there's blind spots in your diagonals.
    Her shots are condensed, but a straightforward normal shot, and her charge shot is basically the same shots, but a touch stronger. Her Level 2 is essentially more of the same as well, but stronger, since it does the same thing, but from four shikigami options instead of two. But this effect also temporarily changes your main shot to four options as well, including affecting your Level 1 charge. Meaning while this is active, Ran's Level 1 charge shots are now incredibly powerful, and quick to fire again and again.
    Lastly, she has a unique mechanic where if you press the focus button, she leaves her options in place so you can deal damage there, and go dodge elsewhere. Personally, I didn't find much use for it though, and you won't see much of it here. It felt more like a detriment in practice, whereas I got more mileage keeping them on me and just dealing as much damage as I could, as quick as possible.

    Interesting note: with regards to the "trap". That's likely the reason that the story normally plays "Memento of an Avaricious Beast" against Yuuma here, not merely the patch. Ran meeting Yuuma had nothing to do with Zanmu's plan, so the music reflects that.

    The music patch is like easily the most smart thing you could do for your sanity. Trust me. Reimu's theme especially is fine in small doses but this game turned this theme into one of vitriol

    I approve of the patch - the early-stage tracks aren't bad, but there are a lot of other good ones and it's a shame not to hear them here.
    Yukari the kind of person who you'll say "I don't understand" and she'll reply "don't worry, you don't have to." I swear she lives for the smug satisfaction of knowing more than other people.

    Ran as an investigator for once (even if it's just to report to Yukari) is really interesting, and I low how her past is tied back to the Animal Realm with her interactions with Yuuma. (And the callback to the Satori manga with Orin is fantastic)
    Also lmao Yukari basically going "There is no (turf) war in Gen So Kyo".

    Seriously, the two songs you mentioned are my exact two favorite remixes so far of Chiyari’s theme! Which are definitely not stuck in my head again now…
    (Stack reference aside, it feels good to hear Sanae’s theme - it’s great that that patch exists, and it honestly more enjoyable this way when watching your videos.)

    Everybody say "thank you, Toby Fox". It's so funny how that video of his literally came out like a week before this game's full release. ZUN was probably like "does he know" lmao
    Anyway, Ran is one of my favorite characters to play, and not just because I have a bias for fox women and find (most of) them attractive or something.
    Good damage, interesting utility (I actually think her focus is good on Chiyari's nonspell lol), halfway decent scope. Also I love the fact that we got some little backstory on her here.
    Oh, I'm so glad to see the music patch. As you said, not only do Reimu and Marisa's themes get really repetitive, but also there's like... 4 themes you never hear AT ALL in Story Mode, and you have to go into VS Mode to unlock them for the Music Room.
    8:43 Oh this portrait is absolutely adorable.
    Orin... I swear, she's like the Dark Meta Knight of Touhou. Always awful when you face her as a boss in this series, and, getting ahead of myself here, absolutely atrocious when actually playing as her...
    On Normal, she's not too bad, actually. But on Lunatic, her EX attack spirits also _start shooting..._ Why??? I think they can do that on Normal too, but only if she raises the level of her Extra Attacks enough, which is rare for the AI to do.
    18:12 Chiyari's clear achievement says "Could that T-shirt be from that well-known brand in Hell?". So yes, it's a whole-ass brand owned by Hecatia...
    If Orin is Dark Meta Knight, then Chiyari is like Brawl Meta Knight. Hell, even worse. No one has a problem with banning her (and Reimu) from tournaments of this game, while at least Meta Knight bans in Brawl tournaments were kinda controversial. The thing in common with both, though, is that if you don't ban them, the entire meta (lol) becomes viability based on who can deal with them the best, since they just warp it around themselves. And at that point, why not have _everyone_ play as Chiyari and see who gets the kill first...
    She is the absolute most broken character in the entire game, even Reimu loses to her. Farming Level 3s into Level 2s just make it pretty much impossible for the opponent to win. Level 3 summons a bunch of spirits around the player, and Level 2 chaining ensures they stay up by resetting their timer, while also spawning two more.
    ...and would y'all believe me she isn't even the most broken character in a PvP shooter? But that's a story for another time... even if the game I'm alluding to has the AI be dumb as bricks...

    I'm so glad you decided to use the music patch. It gets really tiring hearing Reimu's theme over and over again.
    Anyways, Ran is a pretty good shot and deals pretty good damage. Her scope is also pretty convenient for Chiyari.
    Speaking of Chiyari, she's definitely a menace. Her purple fireballs get very annoying, especially on higher difficulties. This is especially true if she decides to use her level 2 after her level 3, which will enlarge all the fireballs on your screen to their max size. The current strat for Chiyari on higher difficulties is to slow down her fireballs with your scope, which Ran does well at. Let's just say, some shots don't have this privilege like a certain cat.
    Yuuma as a final boss is pretty chill relative the other possible final bosses in this game. Her additional final boss spells aren't too bad to deal with, and her Ex attacks aren't too bad to dodge. Also, other people have mentioned this, but Yuuma is the only the final boss in this game to have her theme play instead of Zanmu's theme, probably because she was already a final boss. Another fun fact is that Yuuma is one of only 2 final bosses to have the arena fought in not be Zanmu's corner of Hell, and you'll see the other one in the next video.

    As detailed in the video, the most efficient strategy with Ran is to use a C2, then get as many C1s out as possible while all four options are active for some truly ridiculous damage.
    Ran ends up being one of the easier shots (LNN and otherwise) across the entire roster; despite having almost no defensive utility, she fights Yuuma instead of Zanmu in Stage 6, which is a far easier boss, and even her fight against Chiyari in Stage 5 is mitigated by her scope being fairly strong against the spirits.
    Speaking of which...
    Chiyari is some of the dumbest design I've ever seen in a Touhou game. If you've seen any footage of her gameplay you'll know exactly why; her C3 chained with a C2 is ridiculously difficult to deal with for way too little cost, making her the strongest PvP character. As if that's not bad enough, it's plenty easy for the stupid CPU to accidentally trigger that exact same combo thanks to the automatic C3s being sent through the phase system.
    There is one trick you can do to try to make the fight more manageable - reducing the spirit count as actively as possible, which may involve intentionally not scoping the spirits so they disappear faster, as well as trying not to trigger C3 phases when she has near max gauge, which is when the CPU prefers to charge up to send an attack (which ends up usually being a C2).

    Like, the big reveal that Ran was once among the beasts causing havoc and was friends with Yuuma.
    Also, we can now clearly see that Yuuma has a spork and not a spoon.

    Still is hard to believe that Toby fox just said one day "Zun, if you can, someday make Ran playable..." and ZUN straight up went "why wait? ;)"
    And to top it off gave Ran a big lore expansion AND a good-ass remix of charming domination just at the time when PCB was on it's 20th anniversary i think.

      I guess. Honestly, I wasn't entirely against it, since playing alternate tracks for bosses is nothing new (the way it worked in the latter fighters came to mind at first). They are fitting songs for early bosses.
      However, the ultimate thing that made me decide on using the patch is that the way it works normally, for about a third of the cast you'd _never_ hear their actual theme in story mode, only in VS mode. Since the only time character themes play are for the latter bosses, and there's a non-zero amount of characters who are never fought near the end of the game.

    3:01 I guess one reason why ZUN decided to have the early BGMs be the same all the time was that most characters used stage themes unfit for battles, admittedly.

      Well, keep in mind these _are_ still the themes used for them in VS mode. These _are_ the themes ZUN decided are best fit for battles.
      Keep in mind, this is a phantasmagoria game, and it's the same thing ZUN did in PoFV. Hard and _really_ intense boss themes don't really fit a game like this, so even back then you had cases like ZUN choosing Youmu's stage theme over her boss theme, or remixing Cirno's theme to be less intense and more lighthearted, or designing a completely new theme for Sakuya to get away from the "hard and driving" themes from EoSD.
      Ironically enough, the inverse is what's true. The choice to play "The World Is Made in an Adorable Way" for the early boss fights all the time seems to come from wanting something lighthearted at all times for the easier, early game fights.

      ​@@lunatic0verlord10 I think that's more to do with how Sanae ended up in the story in general. Cause she, along with about a third of the cast just kinda fall off the main plot after their route. Sanae for example I can count on one hand how many more times she's gonna appear in the remainder of this game (and one of them was just the Sanae vs Tsukasa fight we saw earlier, just from Tsukasa's PoV)
      Edit* Also, it's not a universal rule. Boss theme's would get overwritten as well. Mamizou for example gets "Futatsuiwa from Sado" as well as Aunn getting "A Pair of Divine Beasts". Both of which would get replaced by one of the three "default themes" when fighting them normally (without the patch, I'd fight Mamizou to the tune of Magic Beast Scramble or The Oni on the Perpetual Mountain depending on the route. Heck, you've already seen that happen prior)

      I mean, RAN, who spent most of the SERIES as just "Yukari's assistant who hardly leaves her side" has just had a major role in the plot, with even a BIG reveal regarding her and her past.
      Sucks to be Sanae, I guess.

      Zanmu's theme overwrites the character's themes as a final boss, even with the patch. When you fight Yachie, Saki, or Reimu as the final boss, Zanmu's theme will play. Makes sense in the case of Reimu, since you play as Zanmu and that is what they did in PoFV.
      However, Yuuma in Ran's route is the sole exception: even in the non-patched vanilla game, Memento of the Avaricious Beast plays for the final fight against her. I guess Yuuma gets "final boss from a previous Touhou game" privileges.

      Yeah, the patch doesn't change that, probably because of how the bgm changes are coded; the Yachie and Saki final boss fights have 2 bgm changes (pre-battle theme - character theme - Zanmu theme) and I guess it's too difficult to alter a coded bgm change
      As for the Suika battles, her theme probably just didn't fit that well for a final encounter lol

    14:24 If I remember correctly, the third battle theme was originally fixed to be Suika's theme, right?
    So wouldn't this mean that, without the BGM patch, you'd just hear Suika's theme twice in a row?

      I'm not sure how Suika's them works exactly in this game. Cause it is described as "Suika Ibuki's and the end-game stages' theme.". However unlike Reimu and Maria's theme, that one's much less rigid.
      Like, I didn't have the patch going for my Reimu, Marisa or Sanae route. But in each case, Suika's theme didn't play for Stage 4 on either of them, Saki & Yachie's proper theme played (since the whole rule is, Boss 1 Reimu - Boss 2 Reimu - Boss 3 Marisa)
      Looking through, it seems like Suika's theme plays for Boss 4, but only for any of the non-newcomer/animal realm leaders.
      So for example, in Aunn & Nazrin's scenario they fight Mamizou & for Seiran she fights Tsukasa as the Stage 4 boss. In those cases "The Oni on the Perpetual Mountain" would play
      However Rin fights Chiyari and Tsukasa fights Saki, and in both those cases their proper theme song plays.
