    I saw a video from India I think where they took two regular high pressure hand pumps and had a huge flywheel that was driven by a jackshaft and then an electric motor. So elegant and effective I must say I've been gathering parts to make my own. Thanks for the video

    Both pistons seem to make compression on the same time , shouldn’t they be 180 offset ?…
    So if 1 piston is compressing the other one is open or at suction ?….
    Or can it be in this sett up because the difference in piston diameter ?.
    Is there more information to be found somewhere on the how and why ?….
    Thanks again for a great diy project 😀

    Does the counterbalance serve any purpose? The motion of the pistons is driven by an electric motor… why the counterbalance? You might find thermal grease (on the cooling rings) would improve heat dissipation… but really, the detail on the cylinders is brilliant!

    • @5tr41ghtGuy
      @5tr41ghtGuy 3 года назад

      If you look carefully you may notice that Paul is feeding the high pressure compressor from his low pressure compressor (~7 bar). Also, the rods/pistons of the high pressure compressor are different diameters, suggesting that the high pressure compressor itself has 2 stages - altogether that makes 3 stages.
      If you wanted bigger pistons delivering 300 bar pressure, you'd need a *very* powerful motor! Remembering from physics class:
      force = pressure * area
      and suppose you want a 50 mm diameter piston on the final stage:
      pressure = 300 bar
      diameter = 50 millimeter
      radius = diameter /2 = 0.025 m
      area = PI * radius ^ 2 = 0.0019635 m^2
      force = pressure * area = 58904.9 N (13,242 lbf or 6.6 tons)
      and that only accounts for the final stage - Yikes!
      As Nikola Tesla once said of Thomas Edison, "His [Thomas Edison] method was inefficient in the extreme, for an immense ground had to be covered to get anything at all unless blind chance intervened and, at first, I was almost a sorry witness of his doings, knowing that just a little theory and calculation would have saved him 90 per cent of the labor."

      @@tylerdurdencotw I'm not sure Paul understood your question, so as a mechanical engineer I'll note that compressing air makes it hotter according to the ideal gas law:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ideal_gas_law
      Solving for temperature, you get
      T= (PV)/(nR)
      I suspect heat due to friction is negligible compared to heat from compressing the air.

      This unit will allow you to have 10times that pressure, I don't know why he built one but I can tell you how useful it can be to many, people with off-road vehicles have to deflate and inflate back and forth their tires a 3000-4500psi air tank allow them to do this during the whole trip. Another use for hobbies like, Air rifles PCP to 2000-4650psi, Paintball hpa makers, some airsoft guns and for the lowest end using between 200-800psi water rockets.
      You could use it for scuba diving, but you will need to have a very nice system of filters to ensure the air is clean and safe to your health.
      I personally would like to have one for my PCP rifles.
