After working for over a decade at Sea I can tell you with absolute certainty that majority of the people working onboard ships hate coming to ports in Indian. Do you know why?
    1) Poor Infrastructure of ports.
    2) Rediculous amount of unnecessary paperwork.
    3) Poor and arrogant attitude of all beaurocrats who harasse people on the ships for money.
    4) in some ports people steal from the ships further damaging the name of Indians.

The easiest and perhaps the cheapest way would be to build a land bridge to Sri Lanka. Colombo is already the best port in South Asia and Trinco on East Coast, the largest potential capacity. A land bridge will have the added benefit of locking in Sri Lanka with the Indian economy and, thereby, Indian security.

What is not being said is that very large container ships will never go to ports like Mundra even if there is enough depth. This is because container hub shipping is very time critical because ships have to arrive and load and unload on time to exchange containers. Therefore very large container ships will not divert away from the main shipping lanes because that will cause delays. This is why Mundra and other ports outside South West India and Nicobar will never succeed as transhipment hubs. They are OK for bulk cargo and general cargo however as these do not run to tight schedules because exchange of cargo does not take place for that kind of cargo and those are effectively point to point rather than spoke and hub.

Please make arrangements to provide "green methanol " at vizhinjam port (Kerala) for mother ships .

Firstly understand few things, India is exporter or importer, thus the cargo that is coming to India is mainly imported by India. Singapore, Jebel Ali, Port Klang, Colombo are mainports where big vessels berth, only for them to discharge their cargo so that other vessels enroute can take it. Singapore at the Eastern mouth of Malacca strait is where much of the containers are discharged, for transshipment to other destinations like China, Thailand, vietnam etc. Each shipping line has different "home" port, for example Maersk lines, all cargo that is going to Europe will be sent via Jebel Ali, All Maersklines vessels will dock at Colombo for transshipment to the east.

To be a transshipment hub, the Indian port need countries to send their shipment there and collect their cargo too.
So far Singapore, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka ports serve this purpose.
Which country would send their containers/cargo to India for onward shipment?
In that respect, I think Gwadar Port, Pakistan is better for transshipment purposes. Through the BRI, they could serve Iran, and Central Asia and Western China. They need to get over the geo-political hurdle first.
You will see goods from these countries going out to the world, and the world's goods going to them from Gwadar.
India should stop their silly posturing towards China, for the sake of the United States of America.

The issue between India and China is not on behalf of USA. It's based on territorial issues. Normally, it should have been solved via peaceful way. But the 1962 attack of China was very unexpected, unprovoked and India will never trust China again. Also it's the character of China to bully most of it's neibours. They don't like other countries gaining power and wanted to remain as the sole political and military power of the Asian region. They see India as a threat in that regard.

    • @aleenaprasannan2146
      @aleenaprasannan2146 6 месяцев назад +2

Any country's ship navigating Indian Ocean will dock in as many ports on the way that has the depth capacity...because cost efficiency and fuel. Commercial shipping isn't just between initial country and the final port. Shipping cost increase with less number of ports and thus in between shipments that share the cost. More ports in between the trip means they have more options to refuel, can probably use the weight they save from carrying extra fuel for more cargo and thus more cost sharing.
On a different note, many countries are now putting pressure on shipping industry to reduce its environmental impact. So more items shipped in one route has low environmental impact in a similar way as public transport does.
Edit: BTW, you seem to think that the world ends at China and that East Asia has some totally idiotic reason to transport everything through China to Pakistan to ship from there? Have you not seen the number of ships that cross Indian ocean to East Asia? You think they are bonkers to eliminate that economic option and then add on a humongous transshipment cost to move it all the way across Pakistan and China? Are you nuts?
India cutting down its on expenses from transshipment cost has nothing to do with China.
Not everything India does is about China. If you are from China, you might want to start thinking that not everything in the world is about China.

Shipping cost goes down with less ports to call.
The huge super carriers reduces the costs of shipping.
They prefer to dump their load and pick up another load at one port and shuttle back to another major port.
There are countries like Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and Taiwan besides China that import and export a substantial amount,
Medium sized ship shuttle between these countries and Singapore and Malaysia.
These two countries are transshipment hub in South East Asia.
Their attractiveness is from the turn around time of ships calling at their ports.
Singapore boasts of mega ships coming in the morning and sailing off in the evening, every thing done. Loading and Discharging operations, bunkering and ship stores..
Google and find out how many containers the Port of Singapore handle *in a day.*
Thousands of dollars are ticking away the moment the ship is docked.
That's where the Singapore, Malaysia, and China operated Sri Lanka ports ace in, as fast turn around of ships reduces the time the ship spent in port..
China can also import and export from and to the world through Gwardar Port, in case the US blockade the South China Sea or the Malacca Straits.

Could someone explain to me the logic behind building a megaport in Andaman Nicobar. Where will all the containers go once they offload at the port? Similarly, how will they be transported to the port? By ship from some port on the mainland? If so, why shouldn't the megaship that is offloading or onloading at the island go to the port on the mainland?

    • @rustteze
      @rustteze 8 месяцев назад

It won't work. The main reason is for providing a bunker (fuel) stop. But bunker stops also handle all kinds of maintenance, for which Singapore is Haven. For the transshipment part, they may aim for Bangladesh, Myanmar etc and india only, as it's right on the main east west route. Anyway that port won't be very big... If it already has natural depths, it can very well work for a small quantity annually.

Transshipment means moving containers from ship to (another) ship. For example, if a container is supposed to go from London to Bangkok but there are no regularly scheduled ships between those 2 points, a ship that is going from London to Sydney could drop off the container in Colombo on the way and then another ship going from Dubai to Bangkok would pick it up from Colombo on the way and take it to it's final destination.
There is no need for the container to go into the hinterland of Colombo, they just stay on the dock for a few days between ships.
The same logic could also apply to other places such as Nicobar. Nicobar has the great advantage that it's at the mouth of the Malacca Strait which is one of the most heavily trafficked shipping lane in the world so has a LOT of ships going near it every day, making it easy to tap into some of the traffic.
Of course, why said ships would stop at Nicobar rather than Colombo or Tanjung Pelepas or Singapore that are all nearby is an open question, but 🤷‍♂.

Both these combined meant a scheduled stop in India added to the total time taken by a phenomenal amount. Ships can not wait that long. I wonder how much India has improved in this respect. I think India could have hired Hambanthota as its offshore port from SriLanka, and handled transshipment from smaller ships from India to larger ships of global companies. What would the point be ? China setup a massive export sea system but today it's economy is in crises & S & P has put out a report that India will be Asia's economic driver , am sure plans are in place for a few megaports but it depends on the relationship with Sri Lanka because any alternative that India offers cuts Sri Lankan tax flow & now that India & Japan are you develop a port there it may not be viable to repeat in such a short distance unless trade flow increases. If this war between Israel & Hamas has amend in sight then the 1 corridor termed spice corridor via middle East can become a reality. The other G20 corridor that involves India is the corridor via Angola in Africa. Remember India after '47 pursued terrible socialist pro USSR policies termed Nehruvian policies that did not develop exports. It wasn't till the Indian economy crashed in the 90's that the govt then abandoned all Nehrus stupid policies that pulled India back vs China. This is why USA went with a China that was willing to be a export hub , while India refused to change. So India is a late starter but the future is very long & India will develop & change as times require to meet demands. It's a vibrant rapidly changing country that now has a youth population that demands change for better lifestyles.

People who blindly criticize the old policy seem to forget what exactly it was for and why it was specifically designed and intended to transition into an open economy later.
India had absolutely no local industries by the time British left and opening the economy at that stage would be the same as switching from imperial colonization to economic colonization. We would have been heavily reliant on foreign goods and any indegenous industry would have gotten outcompeted by foreign established businesses. All of our government representatives would have been at the beck and call and mercy of foreign countries as they would have complete control of such an economy that heavily relied on foreign exports and foreign businesses. Not to mention how it would have further driven down the currency value. And socialist policies where needed at that time, for the poor condition most of our people were in and because our government shouldn't have been similarly subservient to the few domestic business tycoons either just like they shouldn't be to any foreign ones. Otherwise, we get results like South Korea whose Chaebols basically own their government; and what's wrong with that? Ask their nose diving birth rates, cost of living, suicide rates and the phenomenon of death by overworking. In short, had India opened up our market to foreign businesses right after independance we would have never gotten to as better as we were even in the 90s (since you seem to think anything of any good in India only existed after 2000s). We would have been in the same situation many African countries were in, exploited for raw materials and too dependent on exported finished goods(sound pretty similar to British colonization, right?)
Take off the blinders of party loyalty and educate yourself on why things were done the way they were and not just get stuck in the how it's better now. Things only more forward, doesn't mean what was done before was wrong. It would only be wrong if it worsened from their predecessor. Aka, if 90's were better than 80's- they did well. Doesn't mean what they did was wrong if things continue to get better in 2000's as well. It only means they didn't eff up in 2000s. You can only say what was done in 90's were bad if it makes things worse than what was done in 80's (empirically, not the politics tinted feels).
There is also a very important fact that effect of economic policies can take time to reflect on the actual economy and that time margin was also longer before and shortens with time; the pace of economy isn't necessarily the output of politics, but of just natural scientific progress that makes things faster.

That is not sufficient to attract shipping to India. Read the comment below.

      TEU CAPACITY BY PORT
      vizhinjam port 120 000
hambantota port sri lanka 300 000
      colombo port sri lanka (2024) 8 500 000 (8.5 million TEUs)
      colombo port sri lanka (by 2030) 35 000 000 (35 million TEUs)
how to catch the capability of sri lanka in port sector? its impossible , thats why india try to make a bridge to lanka to connect it with sri lankan ports
