This event occurs early in Conan's career (when he is an apprentice thief). Indeed, Conan had not even attained his full growth (although his scarred fist was already well able to smash a grown man flat!). I have read the entire Conan Saga several times. I've never heard it said else where, but I have always believed the kindness Conan showed to this aeon's ancient cosmic demigod Yag Kosha, resulted in a blessing that was no small factor in Conan's dizzying rise to the throne of Aquilonia (though his reputation as the most terrible knife fighter of the Hyborean age was all his own doing!). Now, an old man, my strength gone, my adventures over, it would be too painful to re read the saga, but I remember well how Howard's words inspired me in my youth, when a motorcycle and naught but nerve was all I had when I set out to try the world.
Robert you've got a great story telling voice. I get insomnia sometimes and (please dont take this the wrong way) listening to you helps chill me out and sends me off to sleep (in a good way)!
In the early 2000s I moved to Lafayette, Louisiana and found work with a plumber. He was this big guy named Marvin Ellis. At lunch one day, Marvin asked if I’d ever heard of Robert Howard, who created Conan. I said that I had. He went on to tell me that his mother had dated Robert Howard before marrying. I thought he was full of it, but later found out it was true. There was even a movie about it in the 90s. Anyway, just a weird story from the past. Thought I’d share. This is one of the best Conan stories. I have the big, leather bound collection of Conan stories. Good stuff.
Cool. I met Marvin at the Howard Days in Cross Plains this year. He drove up with his motorcycle. Let me know if you want to sell your leatherbound Conan collection :) I have the cloth-bound editions from Wandering Star since I was too late to get the leather bound ones.
Wonderful!! Ahhh, more classic sword & sorcery, please! More Howard even. I did my high school thesis on Howard because I found him to be a fascinating and tragic figure. But as an aspiring writer myself, I always connected with Howard and the way he said, "I didn't create Conan. He came stalking out of the mists of of my mind fully formed and telling me about his adventures.“ (paraphrasing that a little bit... It has been a long time since I read that quote)
@@TheWellToldTale Robert E. Howard was the master of the short story and novellas. His prose absorbed you into his tale, his characters and descriptions brought to life. You can feel and see and hear the scenes and characters. It is because of this that inspired me to become, I hope, a good writer.
Wonderful Robert! If I had any extra income, I would give you some. But alas I barely survive on a retirement stipend. This brought me joy on a cold winters day. Perhaps some day you would read us some Poe or Turn of the Screw. Thank you.
Renee Barger - Thank you so much! I completely understand that not everyone can support financially, and I really appreciate kind words such as this. it makes all the effort worthwhile! And yes, I am definitely planning some Poe soon ...
+The Well Told Tale - You'll please let me know if you need equipment or something? This channel showcases your voice and narrative abilities extremely well, it's a great pleasure to listen! Should you ever be in Need of stories of passable lenght, I got a ton of anthologies starting from before any of us were born. 2 of my favourites: how kittens were created at the Garden in Eden (by the snake hehehe), the other bout Erwin Schrödinger's cat, who turned the table on the good Professor (even the goldfish and canary birds are better observers than Schrödinger). Anyway, I don't want to suggest stories, these just came to my mind, I'll enjoy all your narrations, even if you start on Karl May's Winnetou and Shmattercheck (: Have a great 2019!
