Wow thanks so much for featuring my portfolio! I was so surprised to see it in this video. What you said was totally right, once I updated my portfolio I got a lot more early stage startup founders contacting me. My advice for anyone out there is to choose a specific niche and tailor your online presence to serve that niche. Clients would rather hire the best expert for their niche, not a generalist who can do everything.

When I was finally able to go to college, I kept thinking that I was going to finally achieve my dream to be an artist/animator for companies like DreamWorks, Blizzard, or Ubisoft. But as an inexperienced guy with very little money, I didn't consider the expensive cost that specialist colleges charged. After I dropped out of college, I kinda hit a rough spot for the longest time and I lost my confidence as an artist and I hit art blocks many times. During that time it took me some time to realize that if i couldn't go back to school right away, I needed to find other ways to try to improve as an artist and build my portfolio. After a few years of hard work in a low income restaurant job, I started investing in good art tools like a surface studio and an iPad to help me get inspired and start creating professional looking work so I can build up my portfolio and hopefully get hired somewhere without an art degree. I am no where near my dream goal, but I am still pumping out art and I've decided to start selling my art and build up social media pages to display my works. I've also come to realize that illustration might be something I'll decide to do instead of animation. I know some people may disagree with me, but I've always felt not enough artists explain how they got to where they were. Some give simple answers like, I went to school and applied to this job without giving helpful tips on how to be successful in the art industry. Anyway, this is a an encouraging video and thank you for the helpful tips.

Thank for telling your story, I hear you, it's a tough world out there for artists. Art in itself doesn't worth anything, you can't put a price tag on it. The question is, how can you use your art to solve a problem, and one that's worth solving? Once you figure that out, you'll be on your way to a career, not a dream. Good luck!
