    I’ve owned my Lightning for a little over a year and have driven it about 26k miles. Charging at home is one of my favorite things. I haven’t had to charge anywhere other than my garage since June. It’s about as convenient as charging your cell phone. Another big advantage is it costs me about 1/3 to charge compared to the Silverado it replaced. In the 26k I’ve owned it - my maintenance has been 2 tire rotations and a cabin air filter. It’s hands down my favorite vehicle I’ve ever owned. With that being said - it would suck if you couldn’t charge at home.

      @@thomashopper3705 Chevy already gets 460 mi on the EV trucks if you arent a Ford guy and you wanted to try one out. Lucid gets over 500 on some of their car models like the grand touring. Great review, if I had to deal with the public charging network on regular basis it wouldn’t be worth it for me. I miss my Raptor / TRX sound but not the 10mpg fuel costs weekly, service costs, or even stopping for fuel. I wish I could have both one for play one for my 40-45 min commute. The 50/50 weight distribution, matrix led headlights, frunk, ability to have 120/240v plugs on demand, independent suspension and instant torque are what make the Lightning such a great truck for me. Great job on the review.

    All valid. I don’t think the ability to charge at home gets enough credit usually. It really is awesome to just plug in at home whenever you need to “fill it up”. The problem with DCFCs is real, but most of us use those…2-3 times a year? It isn’t a factor in everyday life. If you have a gas car for road trips, an ev for everything else is awesome. (Though I road trips mine all the time…I just find it interesting).

    • @chrismarston4266
      @chrismarston4266 11 дней назад

      I still prefer a combustion engine but I will without a doubt own an EV one day, even if it’s for just a little bit. As a point A to point B and right back to point A car it seems very easy and convenient. I would still own a combustion engine because I take long road trips to visit friends and family (I’m about to drive 500 miles to visit a friend for a few days) and I don’t think an EV would be best suited for that. But as a commuter/everyday driver I don’t see much of a downside.

      I used to always get gas at Costco and I always hated that "do I have enough gas to make it". Charging at home is 100% a game changer. I can do a 3 hour round trip no problem but my commute is only 40 miles so I never get close to running out of charge

    Great review! Only one thing I would dispute. There is actually no need to constantly plan for charging. With home charging it’s ready to go every day when you walk out into the garage, so there’s actually less planning needed than a traditional gas vehicle.

  • @swatkin3
    @swatkin3 10 дней назад +3

    I understand the 'charging station' issue. You haven't really lived the "EV lifestyle" until you have a charging station at home. I'm on my 3rd EV lease, and I certainly don't miss having to go to gas stations. Being able to fill up every night at home is one of the biggest advantages of EV ownership.
    The only time I use public charging is on an occasional road trip. If you plan your potty/lunch stops around a DC fast charger, it is not even a problem on trips....my next EV will be a Ford F150 or a Chevy Silverado EV.

    I’ve owned mine since September 2024 and Ford still hasn’t sent me my Tesla adapter(12/09/24). Good thing you got one for your 7 day trial. That being said I charge at home 90% of the time and it is convenient. We took it on a 2000 round trip vacation (just to prove we could) and it wasn’t bad. It’s way more expensive to charge at a fast charger than at home and they aren’t always convenient to find here in the Midwest. The Tesla adapter would be a big deal while traveling.
    Also worth noting, cold temps drastically reduce range. I can’t stress that enough. I took a 100 mile each way trip last weekend. Had a full 100% charge, which is a claimed 320 mile range, and stopped twice to charge before I made it home. I stopped once on the way down (20 min) thinking I had added enough to get back home and realized on the way home I wouldn’t make it without stopping again. Another 20 minutes at the same charger gave me enough to get home. That’s the real drawback to the EV. It’s awesome everyday running to and from work, around town, but it suck’s for those couple hour trips in cold weather. I can make that trip there and back in the summer without charging and have some battery left.
    Just some insight from a guy who owned a Raptor for 4 years and traded for a Lightning. I’ve had it long enough to know I like it but not in every situation

    Change is difficult, first off if you have a home use home charging. If you have work charging use that. And if on a road trip get the Tesla adapter (as you have on your video). We all grew up with gas and going to a gas station. The life style is different and at the end of the day if you do the math and use home charging you can save $$$ (thousands) a year just in fueling costs. That is not to mention the oil changes, transmission and diff, to me that it worth it. In general if you drive an EV once and give it a chance an EV will do everything you want today for 80% to 90% of people. There are some who claim or really need towing long range, for those get a Super Duty. Or if it's for the once or twice a year to the lake, you might reconsider or look at a Silverado EV or Sierra EV which has the range much closer to a traditional truck. (Charging pull through is getting better so this becomes less of an issue). I like the look of the Lightning traditional F-150, but at the end the range and charging speed moved me to a GM product. I used to have a F-150 ecoboosts, moved to an EV truck as it can do everything the eco boost would. Thanks for your perspective.

    I've owned a Lightning for a year now, 90% of my charging is done at home. The only time I use fast chargers is away from the city like recently going to Dallas. .12¢/kw that's my electricity rate at home , I've saved a ton coming from a 2006 Tacoma Sport with a 17 gallons tank and 18mpg. Zero maintenance except tire rotation @ 10k miles. Going electric is a no brainer at this point especially with all the reliable Tesla Superchargers for long road trip.

I have never been inside of an F150 lightning, but I know with my own electric vehicles there is a distinct noise made with hard acceleration. It’s not the chest pounding Godzilla clatter thatfolks are used to when you step on the accelerator pedal, but it certainly does make a distinct noise and I have come to rather enjoy that noise, I’ll be at quiet as it is. I've got a Kia EV6, it's my first EV. It has been great and I've really liked it, however, the rate of depreciation on EVs is crazy. I drive a lot and so i've been putting the miles on it, and it seems that mileage effects EV aftermarket rates much more than combustion engine vehicles, not to mention there's that fear when you get closer to the 100k mark that you're potentially going to be needing a new battery soon, which no one wants to pay for.
    So maybe you save on fuel and maintenance at the beginning, but that savings catches up to you if you need to replace a battery? Or does every EV owner try to ditch it at 60k miles or so? I'm not sure, time will tell.

    I love you Big B. I appreciate the opportunity for you, I understand it, and it makes me happy. But I absolutely refuse to be part of the EV world. I spent 18 months with a Polestar 2, and I concluded that I'd rather straight pipe a unicycle and ride it to work for the rest of my life.

    If you're willing not to change your habits, then this is not for you. It's like saying "I need a sports car but I bought a van". These EVs are for specific individuals who are willing to work with it. The fact that Hyundai has an EV that can eat super cars for breakfast, the whole replacement for displacement and noise is mute.

    There's just nothing about the EV's that does anything at all for me... They're okay if you live in a city and only commute to and from work or around town but as soon as you need to tow and go long distance they immediately fall short! Imagine taking an EV overlanding or the like and the battery dies while you are deep into a trail... You'd need a gas/diesel generator to charge up and out of there...

    • @brita654
      @brita654 9 дней назад

      Imagine going overlanding in the Lightning and you dont need propane or a generator. And an electric heater is a realistic thing in a Lightning. Running out of battery is like running out of gas....people be like "guy, you didnt gas up"?I will be doing it this spring. Trial runs in Maine coming right up in a cpl weeks. Picking up my A.R.E. cap for it next week. Yeah sure gotta charge up somewhere before you go somewhere REALLY DEEP but that kinda thing requires a different breed of person than me. But seriously how far from civilization can you get here in the US? How far do you really NEED to get ? Agreed on the long towing distances.

    • @mikemade_
      @mikemade_ 8 дней назад

      @@brita654 Everyone seeks different experiences. True overlanding in Utah, Arizona, Montana, Idaho, etc etc is not a short range camping trip 20 to 30 min from your house. There are currently no EV's that can even touch the range of overlanding vehicles let alone a normal camping trip. Most overlanding rigs (gas or diesel) have spare tanks that land anywhere from 1,000mi to 1,500mi range. Plus it's not uncommon to bring another 10ga - 20ga along depending on where you're going. The basic extended 40 gal tank for an F-150 will give you a 720 mi range max or about 500 mi of heavy driving/sport mode/stop and go. As soon as you get that Lightning off raod you are going to be drawing far more power from the cells to traverse off road. In addition if you decide to power everything off of the truck ie heaters and cookware you are going to be drawing even more power from an already limited range (full charge per Ford 230mi standard battery and estimated 320mi on extended range battery.) Then when you get to where you're going and run out of power, there's no way to bring you more fuel. EV's have a long long lonnnnnng way to go before something like a truck model will actually be able to compete with their petrol brethren.

      Ever take lunch in the truck in the summer? Keep that thing running please A/C! And actually the Lightning uses next to nothin when not moving so in the winter/summer I leave it on when I go into a place to keep it warm or cool. ICE vehicles use something like 3 times the energy when idling and his point about the exhaust is definitely a good one. You can warm up an EV in your garage with the doors closed to conserve that energy as well without exhaust problem.

    About halfway through the video now, a couple of points into your dislikes… And it definitely shows that you do not own an EV as a daily driver. All of these things would be a non-issue if you were a full-time owner of the vehicle because unless you’re driving significantly more than 200 miles per day, There’s no need to stop at any chargers anywhere because you could just plug-in at the convenience of your own driveway or a garage. Additionally, you obviously don’t own a Tesla as a daily driver. If you did, you would understand that there is no thinking ahead, no road trip planning, none of that. You just send the car, your destination from your phone, even if the destination is entirely across the country, and the Car does all of the planning for you. It’s easier than driving a gas car. Not to mention the car will physically do all of the driving for you as well.Yeah man, thanks for the video, but it seems like you would have a much greater appreciation for electric vehicles if you actually owned one and used it every day. They’re great.

      I agree. Alot of people think public charging stations become a daily or weekly thing but only on road trips. Ive had my Lightning for 8 months and used public charger like 6 times. Used to be gas station often times twice a week. And the savings are serious!!!

    Ironic timing. Ford recalled certain 2023-2024 F-150 Lightning BEV vehicles. The automobile manufacturer said in the NHTSA recall report that the front upper control arm ball joint nut may not be tightened properly. A detached control arm can cause a loss of vehicle steering and control, the report said.

    My brother has a Lightning. Charging at home takes an hour just to get only one mile of driving power, unless you have the electrical work done to your house to install a home charging station. BTW, I've always wondered why EVs don't have a gear driven alternator coming off the electric motor to charge the batteries while driving. Anybody know?

    • @brita654
      @brita654 9 дней назад

      Having the electrical installed pays for itself in most cases in the first year. The alternator question is the regenerative braking is like the alternator on an ICE vehicle. A true alternator is ok on ICE vehicle because they actually produce more energy but they also waste alot more energy in the form of heat. EVs need to be more efficient. The constant drag of an alternator would reduce range massively on an EV is my guess.
