I Broke my Boat! Paua Dive and Spearfish after Repairing Red Current

- When I (Tasman) took my wee inflatable (Red Current) down to circumnavigate Stewart Island I encountered some very rough seas, cracking the aluminium floor in several places. In this video I weld it up and attempt to make it stronger, then Dad and I take it out for a paua Dive in the Marlborough Sounds.

Such a jack of all trades. Once again, you have inspired me to give alloy welding a go... my steel boat trailer is covered in dodgy, lumpy welds from when I use dad's old school stick welder. And, thanks Tasman's mum for the squiggly fish... def going to try that with the next moki and paua kai.
Haha cheers Paul, it's definitely a bit of a knack, a skill I haven't mastered at all just yet 😂. Good luck!
That fish is gooood, nice one 😁
Awesome stuff. I'm glad you ditched the jandals for the welding... 😆😆😆
😂😂 there's only so much the safety jandals can handle 😂
@NZWildAdventures 😆😆😆
Mate you are a classic. You have bigger kahunas than me when it come to taking your boat out in rough waters
Haha cheers mate! Got a lot of trust in that little boat that's for sure 😂
Your keen to take your little boat around Stewart island, well done, your the man
Loved this video got to love mama's cooking good idea to weld it back
Glad you enjoyed it! Absolutely, nothing beats mum's cooking 😊
Good luck with your boat Tasman. From where I'm looking, you did a great job. Cracking meal mate! Go well.
Thanks Brian! Yeah had a couple more rides in her so far and no cracks yet so fingers crossed 😁
Awesome to see Red Current back up and running. We were in Rakiura on our boat for the month of February. Came out of it having to weld up the oil and water cooler brackets and replace two engine mounts. The ocean down there is not like the ocean anywhere else. I'm well impressed you did it in an inflatable.
Our boat is on a mooring in Waikawa so hoping to see Red Current buzzing around this summer. Will be sure to give you a wave. Keep up the good work, the videos are aweome 👍
Thanks! Yeah hahaha those seas can certainly dole out the beatings 😅, not too bad for the rubber bit of the boat tho 😂
Sounds good, should be doing a few more trips up there in the coming months! Thank you, plenty more to come! 😁
Great first attempt on your mig welding Tasman! Also tackling aluminium for your first go, not an easy task, well done mate! Beautiful food as always! 🤤
Thanks Sam! Not particularly pretty welding but still haven't found any fresh cracks 😁 cheers mate!
Living the life Tasman!
That's a mint job for your first go on the mig that'll hold fine. I've done plenty of mig welding on steel over the years, but only a couple of times welding alloy, I found a spot weld for a second on the trigger with a quick pause while moving forward a few mm's then another spot and continue the same process. It gives that professional stacked dimes look n allows better heat control so you don't burn through thin alloy. Something you might wanna try if your welding again. She looked a bit gnarly in Foveaux lolz your a brave man.
Thanks! Interesting idea, I'll have to give that a go next time! Haha cheers mate it sure gets pretty rough down there 😅
Darn! Good practice on the welder though! Oh and great sock use there bro. Nice looking squiggly deep fried fish 😋
😂 Thanks Summer!
Bad sign when the life raft cracks. It is fortunate that the shipyard was able to repair her and that you’re a master of all trades. Lol @ fish label. It looked like such a nice day. Warm weather is around the corner. That’s going to torture Arved. Nice work roping in the professional chefs. Hopefully, you paid them well for their appearance. It all looked delicious.
Well perhaps a jack of all trades, certainly no master in alu welding just yet 😅. Yeah though the water is only 10 ish down here at the moment 😬. It certainly was delicious 😊 thanks Paul!
Your'e an inspiration! :)
Thanks 😆
Nice 😊 🤠🤙🤙💪
Mean bro. That squiggly fish looks the goods too Taz 😂😂 kia ora for another choice ep bro and Up the Wahs.
Cheers Ian 😂 yeah it's good with blue cod too 😋 hahaha thanks for watching!
Great video if you're welding with mig it's better to tilt the gun in the direction you're traveling and push whereas if flux cored or normal electrode welding you drag there is a saying if it's got slag then drag. You can weld mig with the drag method but for better results the push method is better but you did a great job as anyway.
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah Dad was there telling me to push toward the weld but there were just so many things to remember I was struggling 😂 seems to be still stuck together now though! Cheers mate
Always remember Tassie the only difference between a good weld and a bad one is practice 😊
Cheers mate 😁 definitely a bit of a knack to alu welding 😆
Was that somewhere in queen Charlotte sound? Tory channel? Water looks pretty blue.
Yep, QC sound! Out the northern entrance, it's generally pretty good up there when it's been southerly for a few days beforehand, the northerly really shakes up the sediment though.
Hey bro, are you based in Christchurch. Cheers
Many Thanks,
Roger
Yep, sure am! Cheers
@@NZWildAdventures i like you're adventure man🤟
Cheers for another vid!
Wondering, how long is your dinghy and what size motor or you have? 4 stroke? 2 stroke? I have a 3.7m with a Yamaha 2 stroke 15hp
Thanks for watching! Pretty similar to yours then, mines 3.6m with an 18hp Tohatsu 2 stroke, much better than the 9.8 I had before 😁
@@NZWildAdventures oh yeah man. I had a 9.9 on mine, couldn’t even get up on the plane
Mine could plane, but 2 adults and a couple bags was pushing it 😅
@@NZWildAdventures wondering, do you use anything to get in and out of the dinghy when diving offshore? The sides are too high on mine to get in, I’m looking for options
My sides aren't very high at all and with not much in the boat it comes very low to the water when I haul myself into it, so it's fairly easy. One thing we've done before to make it easier though is to tie a rope onto the far side of the boat that you clamber out on, something extra to pull on 👌
What brand model MIG welder did you use
I have some cracks in my honwave floor panels
It's a BOC Smootharc 181 pulse mig, pretty capable machine :). Good luck!

some one sponsor this mad man a boat
That would be nice 😆 maybe one day!
