As someone who outweighed her husband by over 150 lbs when we started dating, this has been such a thing in my dating experience. I was either fetishized, insulted, or completely ignored by most men who were remotely on the average to good-looking side. Penelope and Colin's storyline has been one that I looked forward to for ages. It's been the best season yet!

I don’t need to see myself in entertainment because I’m not a narcissist, but it is a positive to destigmatize being attractive to heavier people. It’s a weird thing to be in arms about especially since the romance was teased from the beginning of the show.
Nicola Coughlan is overweight, sure... but she's also cute as a button. I've loved her since I saw her on Taskmaster.
Edit: also, Bridgerton takes place in the 1800s and back then overweight people were generally considered more attractive. Just look at history and the art and writing of the time to see clear evidence of that.

It's a big deal because in terms of romance, love stories, etc. in media, tv, film, etc. it is very rare to see a plus sized woman and an average man together. It's garnered some negative reaction, where some people have acted offended because they don't find the actress attractive and seem to be triggered that she has the gall to be a sexual creature and confident.
Are you all forgetting that there is a real lovely person, with real feelings, who is so incredibly cute and talented and nice, who is being bullied by this behaviour and has to carry the 'weight' (pun intended) of all your Karen like criticism? What a sad bunch of people involved in this 'controversy'. Maybe too insecure to realize that actual attractiveness comes from a lot more than size. You've all been watching too much Love Island. The hypocrisy bothers me soooo much and has for years. I always hated that it was okay for the guys to be overweight and even obese but the women had to be skinny and even super model beautiful. The theme was that women could see men as super attractive no matter what but the women could not be. Most people associate beauty with thinness but in my opinion often had butter faces which I found unattractive. I’d rather see a pretty face on a thicker body but, that is the whole point. Everyone has their own preferences and yet, media has for so long only catered to one type of beauty telling us this is the standard. What Bridgerton did was cater beyond the forced standard and I applaud it! I think the star who plays Penelope is gorgeous!
I had more of a problem with the height discrepancy... and the overall mousey behavior of Penolope. When people say hypocrisy... I always try to reverse the situation. Have any of the male leads been short or fat? Would the female audience tolerate it? No. I don't have a problem with it... but don't make it about hypocrisy and how this should be the new normal.
@@IhleDog you missed the point. For years it has been largely accepted as men short, fat, tall, skinny, it didn’t matter. We were told to accept that men should be not only accepted but worshiped by beautiful women as portrayed in media. Not true in reverse. If it is accepted one way, you are closing off a large audience with differences in preference. The height difference shouldn’t matter…it’s the chemistry that matters. Which is why in real life you see couples of various sizes, shapes, and colors. Media should be reflecting that and not just serving to the likings of one sub group. So yes, it is hypocrisy if for years we accepted short fat men but never short fat women in roles of romance.

I was bothered that Penelope's character is the only person in the primary cast that even remotely meets the beauty standards of the era the show is set. All the other women and men looks like worker class people, not members of the aristocracy. (They had a whole sub-plot about one character continuing to work the counter at his club and being shamed for it. But we are supposed to believe all these aristocrats are falling over themselves to marry the farm-hands?)

I’m so disappointed, I expected to see two of my favorite news correspondents to state the obvious, Nicola is not fat! Bridgerton is a guilty pleasure of mine. I hate the main characters, the Bridgertons, mostly Eloise. The romance is cringe. The men are deplorable. The only reason I like watching Bridgerton is the costumes. They may not be historically accurate but I love seeing the craftsmanship, the attention to detail. It's like watching Gone with the Wind. I'm a sucker for frilly dress.
