The main temple has broken down. Those iron pillars were used on the sides of the temple to hold the temple structure together with a huge magnet on the top of the temple. This is what the guide said when I went last year. I have this on video if you want.

I am late to this video but just wanted to throw some info on Konark sun temple.
1- its not empty inside, during early british period it was sealed off using sand due to structural hazard.
2- the structure now is not the actual temple, it was destroyed long ago when the mughals took off a gigantic magnet on top of the actual temple which pulled the structure together(steel beams and plates were used between rock layers.
3- the idol in the temple used to float by the effect of the magnet.
4- you can read a lot about "DHARMAPADA" that will give you some clue of whats happening.
5- all carvings depicts stories from ancient times. The wheels are actually sun dials which can be used to tell the time.
6- the structre is just mere remnants of the original temple.
