Pro tip from "This Old House" to center a window in the RO from outside, slide the window all the way to the left and make a mark where the window flang ends on the siding. Next slide the window all the way to the right and make a mark (on the left side of the window) where the flang meets the siding. Now you have two reference points (on the left side of the window) simply make a mark half way between these two points slide the window to the left to the "center line" and your window is centered in the rough opening!
Your attention to accuracy is great to witness. As a perfectionist, it is like therapy for me to see others paying attention and caring that things are built correctly and to plan. I have seen you and Donavan building walls in-place when they could have been built on the floor and installed into position. I understand that sometimes building in-place is the best way but is it so you are working standing up and not bending or just ??? Great video series!
Laying down is mostly for production, not tedious work that's complex. You also need the space and height to stand up. Sometimes it's a toss-up and just depends on the individual.
What a way to wake up and have my coffee. The intro was hilarious. WOW! Windows look beautiful and the view fabulous! Yours and your families expressions was worth the wait. The bump out (flower box 🙂) a great idea for the furniture. Love the dynamic you and Donavan have, it's terrific 😁
After the experience of building my own home, I can really appreciate the attention to squareness Donovan has. This video series has been so enjoyable and can't wait for the next. I will be sad when you guys are done.
Me hanging windows... It's plumb and level, but not square?! On a side note... I need to pick up some of those little air bags. It's amazing looking out the new windows! My next house is surely going to have more than the 5 I have now. Looking forward to having the room of windows installed.
Matthew & Donavan, you must begin another project sometime in June...because it is an absolute pleasure to be with you both as you help each other bring wonderful joy into our homes...without your charming personalities interacting with each other, the light you bring into our homes will be dimmed into a fog of bland boredom...
You and Donovan work well together Matt, you both have polite/accommodating personalities (at least on cam!), it makes for a smooth workday. Keep up the good work 👍-Andy
Matt, Donovan: I appreciate how you are able to continue your work while also acknowledging the kids who are VERY interested in what's going on. You two are great examples of balancing the job at hand and including/celebrating the children's interest in the project. Hats-off to both of you and Lindsey!
WATCHING Donavan come more out of his shell over renovation is fantastic , i hope you set him up with his own youtube channel when he finishes the reno 👍👍👍👍
Those Festool track saws take the W right out of Work. You have used them, among many other tools, on so many parts of the build that Festool should be sponsoring at least some of the videos. The windows really do look great and the view is very nice too. I can't wait to see that side board located in that new space in your dining room, or wherever that space is.
I thought it was a Redbud tree, but I think I heard Matt say it's a Crabapple on the live show. A Redbud is one of my favorite trees. I have 3. To keep them looking their best requires regular pruning though. New branches often grow downward and inward, so I try to trim those off.
I really have enjoyed this adventure in building. In 1973 I had a home built in Texas in 12 weeks including pouring the foundation all the way to punch list even allowing for 4-5 days of rain delay. The lead times on the basics are nuts.
I put a nice bay window in front of my kitchen sink looking out to my back yard. Love it. You’re going to love your windows in your kitchen too. My bird feeder is straight out the windows. Fun
The windows sure make nice improvement. Matt you and Donavan are absolutely wonderful people.I love how you two work together so well.I love these videos of you two doing this project. Thanks for sharing.☺️☺️☺️👍👍👍👍
Matt, you may be an amateur but Donavan is doing a pretty good job of training you to be his gofor, grip, ripper and other things the grasshopper does. The windows really makes that area pop. I can imagine you standing at the sink with your apron on washing dishes.
Making great progress (those are nice Marvin windows! Maybe you should tape/mark them up, so some tradesperson doesn't accidently put a 2x4 through them?).
omg, the difference a month makes....i asked yesterday (in the live show) what type of tree was in the background (the pink one) and you and Alan said it was CrabApple....and here they are in winter clothing....isn't spring nice! what a nice view you have from that room!
you should see how windows are installed in Finland and Sweden. Windows can be installed on any point of the build so the house can be complitely built before windows go in if needed.
Donovan, I’m thinking you missed a few of the interview questions with this intern (goffer). Tape measure, pencil etc…! Matt, Glad you showed us Lindsay’s reaction to seeing the kitchen windows in. You should have been standing behind her cause I thought it was gonna blow her over with joy…haha.
You know, with Norm Abram officially retiring from This Old House, maybe you and Donovan can fill in from time to time? Haha. Love your little Abbott and Costello Duo.
That view from the new kitchen windows was once wasted on your front entryway. I don't think you will have a problem getting anyone to do kitchen chores with that view. And can we make sure Donovan gets them cookies he requested from the snack bar, he deserves them!
Great view from the kitchen sink! one of my regrets when I built my MN house was too small of a window over the sink. BTW those Red Pines out the window are looking a bit spindly, time to think them out IMHO. Carry on with what you can when you can and it'll be wrapped up before winter comes around again!
Awesome house extension Matt. Just thought that you'd get excellent distant views through those new kitchen windows if you cut down all those pesky trees that are in the way 🤪
I have built doors both interior and exterior out of oak planks. With some planing, sanding, a router, and some Titebond glue you can build a very solid door in a few days. Why are ordering a door when you can build one that is far superior and will only take a small amount of time? You can apply a nice stain and sealer and have a door that will outlast anything out there.
I hope a lot of contractors heard what you said Matt. If you put a lot of effort in framing everything is easier. I need a shirt that says that when I install our bi-folding door systems lol. GCs will be the first ones to claim we build the door the wrong size... No sir, your rough opening is a trapezoid.
So I watch this show before Friday show because secrets are shown in Friday's show. Late start today? Nice video. Massages is so true. Hahaha. Eaglegards...
yes coffee,,,you guys are working...glad to see it..those should be very easy to clean..place is looking great..it should right..haaa...oh they crank open...Don has this all figured out i see..i see you guys using all this wood,i only need 12 studs,,and a sheet of 3/4 plywood..for starters...it will cost me dearly,,the prices raise when i walk in lowes..haa..
Hi Matt, at the 4:20 mark you move a bench. I have one very similar to yours but longer. I made the mistake of letting it be exposed to rain. I thought that since it was made of teak it would handle the weather better but it began to get loose and eventually I just drilled out the dowels, took the four main pieces apart and sanded the entire bench. How would you go about putting it back together again? I haven't applied any teak oil yet.

@32:10 Oh man, when he pulled out insulation the rubbed his nose with that hand and all the fibers are blowing around.... made my nose itch!!!

Did not ever need to remove - I mean tear off - the Tyvek - VERY DiSAPPOINTED!!!
Nice window spread!!

Those new kitchen window are spot on and so is Donavan's pencil doo hickey. I never realized redbud would grow that far north.
Its amazing from the start of the project to now, to see Donavan evolve in front of the camera. Love it!!!!!!!!!!!
After the experience of building my own home, I can really appreciate the attention to squareness Donovan has. This video series has been so enjoyable and can't wait for the next. I will be sad when you guys are done.
I’m sure we’ll be able to find some other project to work on 😄
Window opens... cue Seals & Crofts - Summer Breeze
Me hanging windows... It's plumb and level, but not square?! On a side note... I need to pick up some of those little air bags. It's amazing looking out the new windows! My next house is surely going to have more than the 5 I have now. Looking forward to having the room of windows installed.
What a great idea using a flush trim router bit to cut the OSB!
The best part about doing that is the melodic song the tools sing with each cut.
Awesome Framers have been usin a router a long time for cuttin sheeting
Thanks for the Wife reaction shot. I was hoping for that when i saw the windows going it. It was a nice bit of happy.
I love it when the windows start going in. The flowering crabs look awesome. The purple color looks so nice. The house is screaming together.
Sure is rewarding to watch great craftsmen ship. Where I live (and we just built a new house) close enough is good enough. Nice work.
Windows look very good. They really open the room with light.
Matthew & Donavan, you must begin another project sometime in June...because it is an absolute pleasure to be with you both as you help each other bring wonderful joy into our homes...without your charming personalities interacting with each other, the light you bring into our homes will be dimmed into a fog of bland boredom...
Your turkey on that side board with the pies looks like a bacon wrapped cows head. Either that or Ja-Ja Binks head from Star Wars.
You and Donovan work well together Matt, you both have polite/accommodating personalities (at least on cam!), it makes for a smooth workday. Keep up the good work 👍-Andy

It’s really starting to show progress…It’s going to be awesome!
Fellas that front window gives a view to die for. Magnificent.

Beautiful tree with the purple blossom right outside the new windows - lovely view.

Please do a time lapse photography of how fast your hair grows!
I really have enjoyed this adventure in building. In 1973 I had a home built in Texas in 12 weeks including pouring the foundation all the way to punch list even allowing for 4-5 days of rain delay. The lead times on the basics are nuts.
Mat do you have a Gant Chart for tasks. Gant Charts were invented to show task dependencies.
It’s really cool watching your relationship with Donovan develop into a real friendship as the build progresses. 👍👍
I put a nice bay window in front of my kitchen sink looking out to my back yard. Love it. You’re going to love your windows in your kitchen too. My bird feeder is straight out the windows. Fun
The chatter between you and Don is such fun! And Don; you're not fat, Matt is skinny.
The windows sure make nice improvement. Matt you and Donavan are absolutely wonderful people.I love how you two work together so well.I love these videos of you two doing this project. Thanks for sharing.☺️☺️☺️👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
...aaaaaaaand, it's the Matt and Don show!....
I've never seen a window called Marvin before....... 😲
Your west-facing windows take in that beautiful flowering tree well, Matthew.
My favorite part of the whole project so far is when Alison comes in sees the windows, opens her eyes and says "WHOLY CRAP!!!!"
"You always do dishes! That's your job!" (Real life.) Their son is bouncing off the ceiling, and the dog is like, "Hmph. Humans. What a job."
Matt, you may be an amateur but Donavan is doing a pretty good job of training you to be his gofor, grip, ripper and other things the grasshopper does.
The windows really makes that area pop.
I can imagine you standing at the sink with your apron on washing dishes.
I keep on saying this is a really big build. But now it is a wow build. It is going to look so good.
Great progress on your remodel Matt. Thanks for sharing. Hopefully I’ll make on time for your Friday live chat. God bless.
Love the view from the new windows it’s a real panoramic view.
Matt and Don, What a combo! Fun, interesting and informative.
Glad to see Donavan getting a decent tool belt. Just needs nicks and a stilleto hammer now.
Thanks!
Awesome stuff Matt, nice windows, amazing view, and perfect spot for the sideboard! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks Fred!
You and Donovan have been very successful with the windows and your bump outs and everything else congratulations!
Looks good with those three windows being in place.
i take it that you like the windows in the new kitchen
Just a littlep
Making great progress (those are nice Marvin windows! Maybe you should tape/mark them up, so some tradesperson doesn't accidently put a 2x4 through them?).

29:00 -sh looks like when Matt and the kiln gentleman were loading it up, with layers of wood and 'between' courses of metal plates.
You know, with Norm Abram officially retiring from This Old House, maybe you and Donovan can fill in from time to time? Haha. Love your little Abbott and Costello Duo.
Wow I thought I was watching a ghost video when that window started to open. Matt is starting to look very professional with his tool belt.
Lyndsey approved ! Matt and the planter box, haha . That nailgun makes me nervous.
Great job on your progress Matt. Looking good. You guys are doing great!!!! :)
what a great view now that the windows are going in!
Now that's view, looking awesome Matt
That view from the new kitchen windows was once wasted on your front entryway. I don't think you will have a problem getting anyone to do kitchen chores with that view. And can we make sure Donovan gets them cookies he requested from the snack bar, he deserves them!

This is *ucking awesome.
Your windows are inspired the view is Fantastic.
Matt thanks for adding the metric measure aswell
Great view! Worth the wait. Happy Spring.
Great...What can I say? cheers...rr Normandy, Fra.
It's great you two can have fun as cyou work, thanks
Awesome house extension Matt. Just thought that you'd get excellent distant views through those new kitchen windows if you cut down all those pesky trees that are in the way 🤪
Great video Matt! and Beautiful view out those windows :) Thanks for sharing with us!👍💖😎JP
When we redid our kitchen I insisted on a window over the sink, but you beat me three-fold!
I’ve been on the edge of my seat since you said in the podcast that the windows were done. 🙂
I can't even imagine having a 30 week lead time for ordering new windows! It's so ridiculous now.
Looking good. Happy for you guys showing some noticeable progress.
Awesome job as usual guys, it's coming along and I love it.
Now my week is complete. LOL
🙌🙌🙌
Welcome too the neighbourhood of Mat & Donaven.
Windows look sensational guys top job.
Thank you for sharing your expertise
Make your own door jams!
We need the outtake on why Donovan was shaking his head in disgust at the beginning
Final couple of episodes a collection of the best (worst) bloopers please :-)
I love the way Don let Matt handle the router to trim out the window opening, I wonder why...
It’s woodworking?
@@mcremona Exactly, too many woodchips!!!!! It's like me with tiling, hate the adhesive sticking everywhere!
Beautiful professional work.
Did you know you can use floral foam for live flowers. You can soak the foam in water and stick in the flower and it will take water from the foam

Wow that’s a great view
That seems like a lot of work to gain 14 inches. I guess I'll understand it better when I see it finished from the inside.
Less work than building the sideboard 😄
What a view!
Anyone who has no context to this project or Matt’s channel would think you two were a couple renovating their dream house!!! BWHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
I look forward to this series
So I watch this show before Friday show because secrets are shown in Friday's show. Late start today? Nice video. Massages is so true. Hahaha. Eaglegards...
yes coffee,,,you guys are working...glad to see it..those should be very easy to clean..place is looking great..it should right..haaa...oh they crank open...Don has this all figured out i see..i see you guys using all this wood,i only need 12 studs,,and a sheet of 3/4 plywood..for starters...it will cost me dearly,,the prices raise when i walk in lowes..haa..

Welcome to my neighborhood!!!! Hahaha
Looking great
5:14 omg haha - it's Donovan's house now
Wonderful!
...technical construction tems..."the floppy doo"...
Looking good.
Mr. Donovan’s Neighborhood. 😉
😹😹😹😹Donaven looks like he would rather be anywhere than in the opening shot😹😹😹
I love that buffet you made , is it walnut? , everything looks great!
on the side of the house
