Hey Ian! I have a question about heliports. Do you have to call all heliports to get permission or are some of them controlled by Nav Canada and you can get permission through the app?
It depends on a couple things - if the heliport is certified, you need an advanced certificate, and need to coordinate with the operator to get an understanding of what traffic movements there are in the area - it's not specifically permission you seek but coordination for safety.
If the helipad isn't certified, you still need to coordinate with the operator, but can fly in the vicinity with just a basic certificate.
If the helipad or heliport fall within a control zone or controlled airspace, then you'd need to obtain approval from Nav Canada. If it's class F, G or E no-contact, you don't need to contact Nav Canada. If it's class F CYR, you'd need to obtain permission from the operating agency (such as a prison or wildfire).
Great video, but you should lose the background music, it's distracting.
Thanks for the feedback!
