Now, obviously, not so much and it strikes me as completely intentional. All gains now given up and even reversed due to inflation and the ever present presence of new foreign workers (particularly Columbia here). It's bizarre as it hurts both the locals and the immigrants and I can't fathom the end goal when it's disrupting vast deaths of economy and society.

Nikki Haley’s response is correct, for the most part; the civil war was a power play between north and south, slaves became an issue because the north, who wielded the most power, decided they could bankrupt the south by freeing slaves; it is well documented that Lincoln could care less about slaves, like much of everything, the story has been spun to be magnanimous.

I don't know how much Nikki Haley knows about the civil war, but in fairness to her, it was obviously a loaded question. The guy wasn't spontaneously like "Huh, I wonder how the Civil War started? Let me ask this candidate for president!" He had a "right" and a "wrong" answer in mind, and you could tell her mind was occupied with trying to figure out his angle, and the various land mines to avoid, and how to structure her sentences to avoid gotcha sound bytes. Almost none of her brain was occupied with recalling information about the Civil War.
It's also not a basic history question. The cause of the Civil war is controversial and still debated today. It's not like asking her what year the Declaration of Independence was signed.
