Now, obviously, not so much and it strikes me as completely intentional. I don't know how much Nikki Haley knows about the civil war, but in fairness to her, it was obviously a loaded question. The guy wasn't spontaneously like "Huh, I wonder how the Civil War started? Let me ask this candidate for president!" He had a "right" and a "wrong" answer in mind, and you could tell her mind was occupied with trying to figure out his angle, and the various land mines to avoid, and how to structure her sentences to avoid gotcha sound bytes. Almost none of her brain was occupied with recalling information about the Civil War.
It's also not a basic history question. The cause of the Civil war is controversial and still debated today. It's not like asking her what year the Declaration of Independence was signed.
