Today's road trip solo along the North Coast 500 started in the northern Scottish town of Tongue and took me west along the coast to Durness. On my way I stopped by the spooky half-way house of Moine that is situated along the old road connecting Thurso to Durness. The old road was the only way of crossing the blanket bogs right up until the early 1990's - it's a cool place to just stand and admire the emptiness of the Scottish Highlands.
The road opened up as I drove past countless viewpoints and one magnificent vista after another, trying my best not to stop every couple of minutes to take in the breathtaking scenery. It's easy to see why it takes so long to get anywhere in Northern Scotland - the Highland miles definitely takes longer than most. I proceeded on towards Ceannabeinne Beach and the famous zip wire track before arriving at Smoo Cave.
Despite the tour boats inside Smoo Cave not running because of COVID it was rewarding to be able to walk inside after climbing down what felt like hundreds of steps. Although the cave is spectacular and its entrance is one of the largest in the UK there's still lots more to see in the area - it truly is just one Instagram spot after another.
The seascapes and rugged coastline continued as I headed along the west coast past the Kyle of Durness, over the iconic Kylesku Bridge near Unapool and on towards the historic Ardvreck Castle. Although the evening light was beginning to fade I made it across to a small mound by the foot of the castle and admired spectacular views going off in all directions. I also found a beautiful little waterfall just a few minutes walk from Ardvreck Castle, perhaps named Ardvreck Waterfall - it was a magical way to end the day's road trip.
By the time I made it to the Park House B&B in Lochinver it was dark and rainy and everyone had gone to bed so I checked myself in and did the same. I slept the sleep of the dead that night!
I recorded this video before Scotland’s second lockdown and in compliance with all laws.

Love the joy you had over the backup camera! 😂 it's the little things in life. Good on ya for not throwing a rock off the bridge! Sorry to put out a food vlog when you only had assorted snacks for dinner!

Great one, Mr Matt, You are sure tempting me to explore NC500. One QQ - April 4th week is good to go?

Yeah I don't see why not. Winter will have passed although some of the higher locations may still be covered in snow. It's outside of midge season so no probs there. I think it may be school holidays in England (and Scotland?) so the route is likely to be busier and more expensive but worth looking up some of the accommodation prices and maybe comparing them to another week? Hope that helps!!

Yes indeed, should be good. I used www.rentalcars.com/ to hire a car, might be worth seeing what the availability is at the moment. Lots of other company's do it too! Good luck and have fun!

Hello there, I use Adobe Premiere Pro for all of my video editing including the titles, intro and transitions. Hope that helps, I think Adobe do a 30 day free trial if you're interested.
