When the brothers were young their parents (Frenchy and Minnie) could only afford to give piano lessons to one child, and they went to Chico. Harpo's heart was broken by these circumstances, but he did pick up piano bits from Chico and it ultimately led to Harpo choosing the harp. Harpo, the most loved of the brothers (and the favorite uncle of the four other Marx Bros children) blazed a truly original path in the world of comedy and in music. Chico was really of superior intelligence and prodigious musical talent, and it's underappreciated even today. I, myself, ended up studying music in college because of the Marx Brothers. They had a HUGE influence on me. Even though Harpo and Chico have been gone nearly 60 years, the Marx Brothers were and are American Treasures.

The Harp is the most difficult instrument to play and Harpo mastered it in a year.
Chico taught Harpo about three songs out of which he learned to play one a number of ways. When Chico would get bored playing a job,
Harpo would arrive for him taking over playing that one song as long as possible until they fired him.

When they made this appearance, Chico and Harpo were in their late 60's, and you can see the aging in their hands. Despite this, these "ol' pros" still put on one fine and funny performance. Remember, piano was NOT Harpo's primary instrument. That he could hold his own with his older brother - on Chico's main instrument - shows how fantastic a musician Harpo was.

Harpo taught himself to play the harp, but he didn't know how to tune it properly, so all his life he played a harp that was, technically, out of tune. When he was older and could afford it, he took lessons to try to learn how to play a properly tuned harp, but he never learned anything because all his instructors would just sit and watch him play, marveling at how he could do it with an instrument they couldn't get anything out of because it wasn't tuned properly.

Speaking of, check out the I Love Lucy "Carmen Miranda" episode. Hysterical! This one, and of course the one with Harpo, are my favorites.

@@texasmimi5566 I had a college professor from Cuba who absolutely loved the absurdity of that episode "Be a Pal.". He thought it pretty brilliant that Lucy's ideas about Cuba had no resemblance to his and Ricky's home country, with Lucy pretending to be a Brazilian singer on top of everything (and they had Carmen Miranda's blessing in all of this). Martin and Lewis later did their own version, but for my money, it pales next to Lucy's. That the Marx Brothers are using the tune, though, just adds to the fun.
