Trip Report QF9 and QF10 on the new 787 Dreamliner - Economy

- Flying Qantas's new 17hr Non stop Dreamliner service from Australia to the UK, I caught a connecting flight to Perth from Melbourne and boarded the Boeing 787-900 QF9 from there because it was cheaper.
I really enjoyed your video so thanks for posting it. Qantas is an excellent airline and has been around for a long time.
I'm aging and hope this next bit is of some interest.
The first time I flew with Qantas was in a Catalina flying boat from Port Moresby to Brisbane in the early 1950s.Tapestry lounge chairs with a "swirly" pattern were normal seats on flying boats in those days, in flight service was impeccable, it was like travelling in a tiny country club and consequently I've almost exclusively patronised Qantas ever since. I'm loyal to the company and enjoy being so.
The radial engine noise on the Cat was loud and persistent, the plane bounced all over the sky and it flew though the clouds, not above them. Everybody smoked unfiltered cigarettes, pipes and cigars, drinks flowed with delightful regularity, flight attendants were all male and called stewards and the fares were exorbitantly expensive.
Today flying has become far more comfortable and a vital part of the modern world.
What has been lost is the sheer thrill of flying. When you see lightning striking close to the plane, when the aircraft instantly drops a couple of hundred feet and at night you see the engine exhausts glowing white hot like a furnace, you realise the pilots actually flew the aeroplanes by the seat of their pants.
It certainly was a thrill and we were always a little relieved to land at our destination, perhaps more than we readily admitted.
So thanks for your video, remember simple is good.

You little ripper! ( the sum total of my Aussie is now exhausted) The captions are so good, and I was reading them in an Aussie accent, and creased my spleen! Oh, and @14:30..../put the frikin' camera down!
We also had a nightmare journey coming back 😢 and the directions to find the gate at Perth wasn’t signed!
Food awful and cold coffee!
Looking like next time I fly the 'kanga-route' I'll be doing it on an A350, not a 787. It has a slightly greater range but it'd be interesting to compare the passenger experience in Economy on QF.

Nice video! Liked and subscribed. The meals were good on both flight, but the quality of the headphones were quite bad. Overall they seem to be a great airline, and I hope to try them in the future
Thanks for your video. Will be doing this trip next year (in economy). I know you mentioned noise near wing making sleep difficult but did you manage much sleep? Also when you arrive in Perth from London do you have to exit immigration then go to domestic for another check in? Thanks again

Yes I got a fair bit of sleep thank you and if your final destination is Melbourne, you go through Immigration there and not in Perth. You’re only on the ground for 90 mins max in Perth on the return leg.
@@RichardDowson i have yet to do this flight but it's better for us adelaide people than the old getting the QF81 up to Singapore and connecting to the QF9 which used to go MEL-SIN-LHR in terms of connecting times or close to identical.in the other direction QF10 which was LHR-SIN then onto MEL which ADL passengers connected to QF82 at Singapore this beats the old services hands down.you would be home in your own house the next night although there's a domestic connection Perth-Adelaide involved based on last flight connections of the day while before you would still have to get through another night flight to be home at some god awful time.I don't know how we South Australians coped when coming home from the UK with the terrible 5:05am(april to october)or 6:05am november to march scheduled arrivals
17 hrs in a spatially challenged seat with NO WIFI doesn't grab me as a pleasant flight.
and yet it was. With all long haul flights, especially in economy, you have to expect some compromises. There's not going to be a fully flat queen sized bed for example. There is wifi but not internet at 40,000ft. Sorry.
How full was the flight between PER and LHR?
This flight usually operates at above 90% capacity. It’s pretty full. Chances of three seats to yourself for a lie down in economy: very very low.
@@RichardDowson Is it a daily flight?
Yes. At current capacity, they may add another few flights a week. We’ll see.
@@RichardDowson But now its a summer time in PER and winter time in LHR.
And people may just want to spend Christmas with their family/friends in Britain...in the snow. I know I would.

Yeah I know. I need to get a gimbal for my next vid. There's a whole bunch of other vids now for this flight so you should be able to watch a few a get a better feel for the whole experience. Overall, Im looking forward to doing this flight again.
