    "off-brand europe" is now my favorite way of describing every isekai world ever

    • @maria.skorik
      @maria.skorik Год назад +1900

      As a fashion history nerd the off-brand Europe setting drives me crazy. The women's dresses range anywhere from the 1400s to 1890s to modern prom dress. The men are wearing modern suits, and occasionally 1700s military uniforms. And everyone is wearing their hair down in loose beach waves like it's 2014.
      I know you can't expect a Korean comic artist to be an expert on European fashion history, but it would be so cool if there were a few details that made the setting feel more believable. For example, a woman would never be seen in public with her hair down or without gloves, and putting her in that situation would show vulnerability.

    If I had a nickel for every webtoon I read about a young orphan girl adopted into a noble family to replace their dead daughter only to be harassed and abused by her new family until they eventually kill her resulting in her regressing to the midpoint in her relationship with that family and allowing her to change the future while also uncovering her magical abilities and pursuing a dark haired love interest, I'd have two nickels. Which doesn't sound like a lot, but I need you to understand that I have seen that exact plotline used twice and variations from it used dozens of times and I've read all of them because I have a crippling shoujo manga addiction.

      I remember I was reading this one Webtoon because I was interested in the world building and felt like I could tolerate the ab*se dipiction, as it was usually off screen. Well, there was one panel where the artist drew the protag (a school-aged boy) being SA'd by the antag (his step-father). The problem was, it was potrayed, in my opinion, too similarly to consentual h*ntai or p*rn. I confronted the artist who basically just said they didn't think it was portayed that way, and instead of fixing the problematic panel, I just unfollowed. If someone who has been affected by SA says your art is disrespecting SA, maybe just change it.

    As a korean who read webtoons for 10+ years now most of this really has to do with the fundamental 'weekly' system. The artists are expected to draw 50-80 colored panels every week. It's known that they are always overworked even if it's a team of artists and it leads to boring compositions, angles and similar story arcs imo.
    Also, webtoons used to be completely free but now it's more normalised to pay for the episodes, which I respect. Ads were not enough to give artists salary. And as a comment to people complaining about paying at all, let's not go there... There are numerous resources, not only the artist but editors, platforms etc and if u somehow can read it free at least once that's already a big deal.

Since it forces you to have to go panel by panel rather than page by page, there's no way to accidentally look ahead, so I think it makes big reveals/surprises/jump scares so much more impactful. I actually read a villainess isekai that I absolutely LOVED. The main character was pretty much a normal person and the story was kinda her realizing that most of the love interests for the heroine are either creepy, toxic or both. And the best part was she forced the male leads to take accountability for their behavior and SHE DOESN'T FALL IN LOVE WITH THEM but instead finds her own love interest that wasnt even a part of the 'original plot'.
    I really liked it since it was pretty funny, interesting and sweet. Its called Beware the Villainess and its so good.

She wakes up in the body of a side character trapped in the villains dungeon. When the FL breaks in to save everyone isekai girl hears all the noise and hides under the bed in her cell. The FL thinks the cell is empty and doesn't rescue her, and isekai girl ends up having to join forces with the villain. Regarding the first trope, that’s why I love The Remarried Empress. You’re able to get a revenge story without 1. Isekai or 2. The main character actively seeking the revenge out. The actions of the people that have either wronged her or hate her are their own downfall, and she’s just watching it happen. Plus, living happily without them in your life can be it’s own best revenge, and that’s what she’s doing.

    • @kn-jt9dj
      @kn-jt9dj Год назад +264

      Tbh, Remarried Empress also has an issue where it takes a medieval setting and factors in all the complexities of it (caste systems, nobility, reputation, slavery) but then tries to build characters who are supposed to be "revolutionary" but never break out of those systems
      For example, slavery is a very common practice in Remarried Empress: Navier and Sovieshu are fine with letting it happen and were on okayish terms with Viscount Roteshu (a slave owner) until he started conniving with a slave (Rashta) against them to get what he wants
      Navier takes Viscount Roteshu's daughter (someone who hated Rashta for getting with her brother and wanting to run away with him) under her wing, and this is supposed to be "cute" irony
      And so on
      It's even stranger in the novel because (spoilers)
      (spoilers)
      (spoilers)
      Sovieshu loses his memory and Rashta (the slave) is executed for bearing a child that wasn't his
      Even though Sovieshu is the guy who caused Navier the most pain and shares the burden of endorsing slavery within their kingdom, Rashta has to bear the brunt of it even if it's something she had no idea about, and the story can't acknowledge that because Sovieshu isn't mentally aware enough to take blame aside from being heartbroken that he lost Navier
      (Spoiler over)
      I used to like the series, nowadays I'm meh about it because I have a hard time actually rooting for Navier since her careless view on slavery inadvertently led to God knows how many innocent people living in destitute servitude (Rashta was enslaved through no fault of her own, but because her dad sold her off to pay his debts)

      And to be frank, there are definitely things to like about Remarried Empress: the multi-faceted characters, the 4-d chess, the drama - it's perfectly fine to like the series despite the flaws
      But the story tends to harm itself by including characters who are meant to be revolutionary but operate and benefit _within_ oppressive systems instead of breaking them down when they have the influence to do so

    It's hard to transfer from vertical format to manga format;
    Different platforms have different sizes, so you have to adjust to their conditions to publish your comic;
    Only isekai webtoon I appreciate are the following so far: What's Wrong with the Duke? (Tapas), The Soulless Duchess (Tapas) and Villain to Kill (Webtoons). The "taming" male leads thing though? Hate it. It's usually so manipulative and there's lots of dubious consent going around
    Your point of disliking the very obviously not handdrawn stuff I definitely get, but I feel like it's often a result of how far artists are being pushed, and how quickly they have to turn out chapters to make any money (unless they have a second job, which then again takes away time from working on the comic)

I do enjoy some of those reborn-isekai or I-died-and-get-to-start-over-again stories but they're definitely SUPER oversaturated, which wouldn't be so exhausting if they didn't feel like regurgitated stories with slightly different characters. Some of them are really good and have actual interesting plot hooks (Empress' Lipstick and Long After The Ending are REALLY good for this) but too many of them are frustratingly similar to each other.
    I do wish some webtoon creators wouldn't space out their comics so much with unnecessary panels for JUST ONE WORD BUBBLE but I'm not super pressed about it. I definitely prefer the new vertical scrolling style in a lot of aspects because of the formatting of the app. Page-style makes it impossible to read or see details, so at least for Webtoon and other similar apps' formatting, the vertical just makes more sense and makes it easier for me to appreciate the art.

Spreading the text over multiple panels adds a sense of anticipation, but the art is so detailed and beautiful that there's so much to look at that it doesn't become boring.

Meanwhile now, you may scroll down to the top comments and most of them are just comments from weeks or months prior about how they used their coins. From a Knight to a Lady
      A knight is killed by someone she trusted and is thrown into the body of a girl who (maybe???) died after jumping into a lake because her lover told her to. It's all about the knight figuring out how to save the kingdom she was defending and it has a sweet love interest who falls for her first.
      Reporting for duty, Duchess!
      This is a newer one. A military woman is killed and ends up playing the meek side character in her friends romance novel. She says f that and decides to make this girl strong. It also has a surprise villian :)
      The Tyrant wants to be good
      A girl kills her brother because (daddy issues mainly lol) she thought she deserved the throne more than him. She is killed during her tyrannical rule and is reborn in the same body. Now she is trying to live peacefully and work through her trauma!
      I'm the queen in this life
      A woman does everything to make her fiancé the king but he ends up killing her and marrying her pretty half sister. So when she wakes up in her younger body (either teen or young adult I don't really know) she decides that instead of spending her life and body to make a man king she is going to make herself queen no matter what. This one is pretty damn cathartic and it's funny as hell to watch her ex-fiancé fall for her while she wants absolutely nothing to do with him

    The isekai fl flood is both a curse and a blessing. There's so many that you can filter through the bad ones and find a good one and you'll never run out of stories. Unfortunately they overcrowd the webtoon spaces, so it makes searching the romance tag a bit tedious if you're not in the mood for it.
    A personal recommendation for a webcomic about a fl who died a few times prior and now has another chance at life:
    The Broken Ring : This Marriage Will Fail Anyway
    It's REALLY spicy though! Like seriously, they buckabang a lot. I mean it, this is smut territory. It's so damn well written though and I really like the pacing and paneling. The art is so beautiful and you can really feel the despair of the fl. I don't think there's many people talking about it either which is a shame.

    I definitely don't like the big spaces in-between either, but technically you could put it in the other layout too.
    With the scrolling type - if the Webcomic is well done - it feels like you're watching a show because the page doesn't give away everything. You see one scene at a time and I really like that :) It makes things more shocking when you have to do the pasting yourself.

    I AGREE WITH THE PAYING TO READ. It's super annoying when i find a webcomic i like, but i need to pay to read it. With Webtoon introducing daily pass on on-going webtoons, i find it difficult to keep up. And with other sites literally allowing the readers only a few episodes at a time before locking the last 10-20 episodes (like Tapas), its unsatisfactory, since i couldnt get to the conclusion. This leads to the obvious illegal uploading of comics. But unfortunately for readers who cant afford to pay the artist, they will use these sites methods enjoy some comics.
    Touching on the daily pass, i hate it when it's done with really big webtoons, like Hooky or Nobless, since i can only read two out of 400 something chapters at a time. Its time consuming, thus causes people to give up

I understand how it can feel slow and generally uninteresting if done that way, but if the artist knows what they’re doing, it can be an amazing tool. Panels and scroll are both equally good, but for different reasons. Some of the things I like about scroll is, like you said, the pacing- personally, I think it’s more immersive. The latter especially, because she violently dislikes most of the romantic leads, but the way the world works is they'll literally kill her if she doesn't find ways to protect, defend, seduce, and so on. nice lil subversion and the art styles pretty.

      Those are definitely two examples on the opposite end of the "vIllainess" subgenre. Like, Remarried Empress is the villainess story without any time travel or isekai (which is why it stands out, as a lot of stories don't really need that element to work, but throw it in anyways because genre convention), and then Death is the only end for a Villainess only works because it's an isekai and that element directly ties into the character and plot. Both are probably in my top ten of webcomics currently

    about the scrolls comics: they are formatted that way for 3 reasons;
    1. so that the reader can read the story faster and therefore chew thought the chapters faster.
    2. Economizes time while making them, webtoon artists will often release their comics in big patches or they will have a deadline, some artists deliver a chapter a week so that's why the comics need to be formatted in that way.
    3.Making easier to read, this style of webtoon was popularized in Korea and is often read by Korean students that stay most of the time in their phones and officeworks.
    This comics are made that way for a reason, is simply not affordable to do a full comic panel with backgrounds and ground breaking panels, it would take too much time to do this and time equals money (unfortunately) (there is more reasons but those 3 are more important)

    I’d definitely recommend “death is the only ending for the villainess”. The art style is honestly gorgeous and I absolutely love the ml and fl! Another I’d recommend is “how to get my husband on my side”. In the beginning the fl and mls relationship is a bit frustrating due to some misunderstandings but it doesn’t really last for that long and overtime they just become a lovey dovey couple. Also I read this manhwa called “who made me a princess” and it was the first manhwa that sucked me into the isekai tropes. I see these ones all the time:
    Normal girl is reborn as a character from a novel she read randomly and somehow remembers all the plot lines and characters. She’s always an illegitimate child or a character that never existed in the novel and somehow she gets involved with the male leads and even though she wasn’t meant to have powers now she’s the strongest person on the world and she’s super rich because she knows what mines or other business is super successful in the future. She saves a love interest who’s poor or a slave or something and he becomes a cringey puppy obsessed with her and barks and stuff for some reason. She’s always like oh my gosh nooo I wanna stay away from the male leads :(( but doesn’t really do anything to stay away from them. And she ends up with the obvious male lead who’s usually the one who’s rude and doesn’t like her at first and is super possessive and jealous and toxic.
    Or she’s a villainess but she is changing and the story is basically the same but it’s different since she’s the villainess and people don’t like her because of it until they do and then everyone loves her. The end.
    Or shes reborn as a baby and even though she’s meant to be hated, everyone just loves her and does ridiculous things for her and she meets a boy like 8 years older than her and they fall in love which is so extremely gross to me, he’s probably like 26 before she’s even an adult yet.
    And usually the main character was abused but it’s never represented properly and ends up not being that important anyway except that she feels unworthy of her new happy life and pushes everyone away since she doesn’t think their love is real. But then she finds out she’s the actual real owner of the body and her soul left it originally and went to the real world then returned so she does deserve to be there actually.
    Theres so much more I could say but tbh they’re all the same anyway and i love them and hate them

For example the one I read is called Darth Vader Hero of Naboo (I take no credit for that story or this plot idea by the way, no clue who wrote it but it is one of my favourite books out there) and basically Vader before he discovered about Luke or anything and is just fighting common rebels wakes up on Naboo during the invasion of the trade federation.
