you are actually comparing lenses not cameras and the AE-1 is actually closer to the minolta x700 in specs and capabilities. you are comparing a Minolta entry level camera to a canon mid range camera.
Ok... I’m old enough to actually know. In fact I worked in a camera shop in the early 80s.. minoltas don’t get a lot of love , however they always seemed to have a very bright view finder which helped with focusing. Canons have the problem that they are shutter priority and that won’t suit most people ,unless you go for an A1 which is both SP AP and P. Olympus bodies were always a little smaller than the other makes, which is great, try to get an OM2 for a little more money. Pentax. The ME Super was a truly excellent camera, I sold hundreds. Nikon. At the time and still now were the most expensive and most rugged the F3 is large in comparison but you can use it hammer your tents pegs in when you are camping. Still expensive to buy though. Try to find an FE , FE2. Modern Nikkor lenses will still fit onto these bodies. (And vice versa) The above cameras are all Auto meaning you can set aperture and it will set shutter speed automatically..with the option of Manual. But why not go the whole hog and bag a truly masterpiece piece of history by getting a fully manual OM1 or FM1. If yours just shooting portraits like Jessica then you have the time to set both.
I just got a Minolta X370 today and that’s the first thing i noticed when i first looked through the viewfinder is how big and nice it is,what a beautiful camera it is i loved it.
In terms of picture quality it really only depends on the used film and the lens. The body doesn't do much. So this really comes down to features, build quality and user experience. Both are definitely great cameras!
It would be a simple choice for me: The AE-1 has shutter priority, the Minolta X-300/370 has aperture priority. The Minolta is the obvious option. In addition to having the better (for general photography) autoexposure type, the Minolta also does not have a terrible battery door or a squeaky shutter. It is also cheaper. A lot. As are its lenses. Not to mention the much more informative viewfinder. Also, it is kind of silly to paint sample photo comparisons as comparisons between the cameras, when they are in fact comparisons between lenses.
so helpful! i’ve been trying to decide between the two, but this video helped me decide i want to go with the minolta!! and i love your film photography videos, super helpful and straightforward! thanks jessica xx
Just dropped my very first roll of film off this morning, to be developed! I shot on the canon ae-1 with Fuji pro 400h, but I have an order of Portra 400 coming and cannot wait😆 Not feeling particularly confident in this first roll, but excited to see where I’m at so I can improve! Thanks so much for all your inspiring tutorials and helpful resources🙏🏼
Your comparison has nothing to do with the camera bodies and the images have everything to do with the glass and film chosen for that shoot. The bodies are purely about usability and the experience. I have both and prefer the X-370 by far over my AE-1. The viewfinder and shutter readout is so much more intuitive and quick vs the canon (just my opinion.). Fun video though- thank you
Today I shot some Kodak Ektar 100 film on my 1987 Minolta X-300 (your X-370). The camera (still made in Japan) never let me down. I bought it new loooong ago.
Great comparison video. Very helpful. Minolta definitely seems to have better results, in my opinion. Minolta seems to have a higher dynamic range and much more balanced colours as compared to Canon.
I am about to ask a dumb question, but it's just something I do not know... I have never even seen an analogue film camera in person. I know on digital cameras it is shown on the screen, but through the view finder can you see the background blurring with the aperture???
Thanks Jessica! Really great video, I've never shot film but it's starting to interest me a lot more for some reason. I suppose the necessity of intention with photos.. Also I love the way you say "Canon" lol
The test is interesting but the comparison is wrong..the cameras are not compared but the lenses..the 50mm minolta has less contrast and is brighter, canon has more contrast and is slightly dark, has a bad tonal range...minolta is better
Hiiii! 🤗🤗🤗 what do you think about the “Tamron 35-135mm f/3,5-4,5” lens???? İ found a minolta with this lens for a really good price. İ am beginner and i really do not know if this lens is good or not. İ hope hearing from you. Lots of love! ❤️
Solid lense, I have the carl zeiss jena version of that and the 1.7 50mm prime on my x370 and they work together nicely. 35-135 focal length provides a lot of flexibility.

My F3 could stop a truck coming at it.
Thanks for the insight tack❤

Exactly!!!
If you set your Canon lens to "A", the Canon will also automatically choose your aperture. Great comparison!

ahh this makes me so so happy to hear i am so so happy to help! you are so welcome!

The softness and slightly darker hue of the canon shots 😍 Both were lovely, I so enjoy your work!
Canon Ae-1 for the large lens selection and choices especially the L lenses.
I diden't know there is Canon L lenses in the PD mount but in the EF mount.
I’m so jealous! How are your wide open photos so crisp and in such excellent focus?! When I’m at 1.7-2 it feels like my focus is always just off.
You took a lot of effort to make this video I respect it!
You inspired me... and I just found a Canon AE-1 on Marketplace for $30 bucks! I figure it's worth taking the chance!
could you tell me what lens did you used for your minolta? portraits looks beautiful!
Looks like the stock 50mm1.7
it is the minolta 50mm 1.7!
Thnx guys! These videos made me start doing film photography! Yuhu.
I looooooove my AE-1
Great comparison video. Very helpful. Minolta definitely seems to have better results, in my opinion. Minolta seems to have a higher dynamic range and much more balanced colours as compared to Canon.

ah this makes me so happy to hear, i am happy you enjoy! and that is awesome, what is your fav kind of film to use?
Can you link the lens you used on the canon? THANK U JESS
hi! use this lin: Canon AE-1: bit.ly/2ZlyV0S there should be a 50mm lens under their listing!
I am about to ask a dumb question, but it's just something I do not know... I have never even seen an analogue film camera in person. I know on digital cameras it is shown on the screen, but through the view finder can you see the background blurring with the aperture???
I don't Know How to use Film camera I started my Photography with Digital Camera ; )
that is awesome! are you going to learn how to use film?
I love my Minolta XD11 just as much my Sony a7RII.
Which one is best as per you view
Thanks Jessica! Really great video, I've never shot film but it's starting to interest me a lot more for some reason. I suppose the necessity of intention with photos.. Also I love the way you say "Canon" lol
How would I get the images uploaded up to my laptop?? Or how would I be able to get it into Digital form? Idk if that made sense
yes that makes sense! check out my video 'film made easy' i teach how to get it to digital there!
In your opinion, is the camera itself all that important, or is it really the lens/the type of film you have that matter most?
Body doesn’t matter it’s about lens and features. You’ll get same pic. Reference that singletack66 comment he explains it.
I think they’re both beautiful in their own way🤔
The test is interesting but the comparison is wrong..the cameras are not compared but the lenses..the 50mm minolta has less contrast and is brighter, canon has more contrast and is slightly dark, has a bad tonal range...minolta is better
Ty Minolta is interesting is it sony now
I now use a DSLR.... But I shoot as though I am using film...
Digital is great...
I like the x700 metering better
Hiiii! 🤗🤗🤗 what do you think about the “Tamron 35-135mm f/3,5-4,5” lens????

Harvey thank you soooo much for responding❤️ you are adoreable❤️
Hi, I've started to get more interested in film photography and I wanted to ask you if you've started your "journey" if you have how do you like it.
i bought both for $10 each at a flea market, if you’re paying over $40 for each you’re doing something wrong
why is every camera i look at a "beginner" camera
🖤
thank you for watching!
Max headroom
How did you get the digital copies?
I love all your work and vids! All helpful!

Hey
hi!
♥
Minolta or canon
Like before i watch
yay thank you!
💗💗💗😘😘😘😘😘😘
did you prefer konica or minolta cameras?
I haven't used a Konica camera before. Should I try one out?
ummmm I guess,,
if you want to try konicas, you may try the konica autoreflex series (if you want SLRs)
Canon always
you are actually comparing lenses not cameras
Hi Jessica you are so beautiful
