Fallen angels take to the street
It's an empty dance and so incomplete
Their hollow voices whisper the cry
Farther down the line there's a reason why
You've tried before but you can't buy a clue
    No matter what you do
The darkest side of the night
Burns like a fire for the wasted lives
And there's no way you can fight
Show some respect and try to survive
    On the darkest side
Neon shadows that point the way
Never lead you out it's a game they play
The madness comes and the madness goes
It's a simple world but it's all they know
You tried to fix it but there's nothing you can do
You just gotta see it through
The darkest side of the night
Burns like a fire for the wasted lives
And there's no way you can fight
Show some respect and try to survive
    On the darkest side
In this city you give and they take
You reach the limit you bend and then you break
And there's no escape, there's no escape. No
The darkest side of the night
Burns like a fire for the wasted lives
And there's no way you can fight
Show some respect and try to survive
    On the darkest side

This movie is way too overhated. The shot of Kane Hodder in Time Square is the best scene in this franchise in my opinion. The kills were the best in my opinion. And why is it not enough to get Jason in New York for 50 minutes. A ton of movie don't include the part of their title until the last 4th of the movie. And yet they aren't picked on. The mask is better than the rest in my opinion. The soundtrack is definitely the best and it's just overall an underrated movie. It's in my top 3 Friday films and it's my personal favorite from this franchise. I just feel totally alone on that. People always overexagerate saying Jason is in Manhattan for only 10 to 15 minutes. But if you pay attention, the last 50 minutes of the film are in Manhattan. 40 are on a boat. And that fine. But people are mad because they wanted the whole movie to take place in Manhattan. But they gave you what you wanted and they got all pissy about it so they overhate it. And the original was even better. Having Jason on a skyscraper, Jason boxing Julius in Madison Square Garden, and having a tense chase on the Brooklyn Bridge. But after the studio didnt give them nearly enough money, they couldn't do it. And it's a shame. From what I know, a couple million from the 5 million they got to make was used on time square alone. They gave them a pitiful amount of money for such a massively ambitious project. Even though I love this film very much, i still know it only made 14 million at the box office. Which saddens me. Everyone lost faith because everyone wanted to see this when it came out. But once they heard the news, almost nobody went to see it. And that's when the franchise went into a downward spiral. The next 2 piece of shit films would be very disappointing. And my biggest disappointment from this franchise would come to fruition. Kane Hodder wasn't chosen to play Jason in Freddy vs. Jason. Everyone went into a riot about it. Even Kane wasnt some people's favorite Jason, they still wanted him to play Jason for that role. Since he was the only person to play Jason more than once. He played him 4 times. But they got just a stunt actor to do it and he didnt do well at all. It was a major missed opportunity that will sadden me till I die. But they cam back with an amazing entry with the remake. Top 3 no question. But it ended on a good note at the time of this comment. But at least I know that I love this film. It just upsets me a bit that I can't really find others who do. But 9.5 out of 10 for. I'd only add the scenes they cut from the script. That would perfect it for me.

I recently started watching the Friday The 13th movies for the first time and it seems that I seem to enjoy quite a few of the ones that most people dislike, and I find some of the ones that people like, boring.
You're not alone; I finished Jason Takes Manhattan last night and enjoyed it, especially the second half (the first half was okay); I really loved the soundtrack and NYC locations (I'm a sucker for movies portraying the gritty and grimy NYC of the 60s, 70s and 80s).
So far, here is how I rank the films:
      1) 6 and 7
      2) 3 and 8 (Manhattan)
      3) 4
      4) 2
      5) 1

"Jason Takes Manhattan" is the best of the "Zombie Jason" installments in the "Friday the 13th" franchise (Part VI beginning the "Zombie Jason" period). The character is really menacing in this film. There are a few reasons why, in my opinion: First, we never see his eyes when he is wearing the mask. That is true in prior films, but the utter blackness of the eyeholes stand out in contrast to the relative brightness of the mask. Secondly, Kane Hodder here has perfected his slow, methodical movement, his heavy chest breathing, the deliberate, almost torturous, way that the character kills (i.e. slowly pushing the arrow forward and down toward the woman who stupidly hid beneath the yacht deck), etc. Third, Jason is almost always drenched, and for that reason his black outfit comes across as almost an outer layer of his flesh. The darkness in Jason's tortured soul is what he is really wearing. Finally, some of the kills are gimmicky, like the end to the boxing match on the roof, but others exhibit Jason's deep anger and hostility, such as when he chokes the Asian woman and throws her corpse to the floor. The other great star is the cinematographer. There are great shots in this film and a wonderful contrast in light and in darkness (i.e. the mask being very well lit in contrast to the blackness in the background). Some of the closeup shots of Jason in his mask just after he has killed someone add to the menace of the scene. Just as that was the last covered face the victim saw, so that is the covered face we also see up close. Psychologically, that puts us in the position of the victim and makes it all more horrifying.
The film is not perfect: Since when is Crystal Lake a bay? How does Jason teleport? How does Jason get from the sinking ship to the New York City harbor? Also, the unmasked Jason in the sewer is laughable, and the sewage turning Jason back into a boy makes no sense. While "Jason Takes Manhattan" is overall a better "Zombie Jason" film, I do think that the ending sequence for "Jason Lives," where Jason is struggling with Tommy on the boat, is more terrifying than what happens in this film in the underground sewer. Nevertheless, for all the problems, "Jason Takes Manhattan" is the last time we see on screen a truly menacing Jason. In my opinion, he ceases to be a truly horrifying character in the any of the films that follow.

Very good film, unique setting, good characters and I really enjoyed the part of the film on the ship. It really gave the sense of isolation and nowhere to run, I understand though the main criticism, that most of it should have been set in New York City and the ending makes no sense. Clearly riding on the success of part 7 - A New Blood, this film - part 8 tries so hard but ultimately stumbles.
