Very rarely comment on videos despite loving your content! Would be very interested in a full video on this. Think this is an excellent way of actually getting Home Assistant voice control in every room when it's ready for that, in an attractive, compact and durable form factor. Thank you for highlighting this project!
Thanks for taking the time to comment :) This project and assist still have some work to do, but the fact that all of this has been achieved (all the YOTV work) is amazing. Mike and the team have done an amazing job. This is a step in the right direction for sure :)
Definitely want full setup video for this. This is what I've been waiting for to move my voice control to fully local Home Assistant. Can gut 3 or 4 Mini 2s and put the upgraded HA versions in various rooms.
I was never happy with my Nest Mini 2, to the point where I disassembled it to see if I could somehow build my own smart speaker into it. Never got around to that though, so this project seems perfect for me! Thanks for sharing
Was hoping someone was going to do this. Will be great to be able to move the voice local after having spent money on the google mini's. Can't wait to see how this progresses. Will be following closely.
oooo! This is a very neat project. I think it will be especially nice for some that may have already have Google Nest Mini accessories such as wall mounts.
Wow, thanks for the heads up on this project! I've had several Nest Mini's sitting in a box unused while at the same time hoping for a better solution for HomeAssistant Assist than the little Atom Echos (which have speakers that are just too quiet for most of my rooms).
I might have to try this for myself. One wishlist item I'd have is it these PCBs could also be used for ESPresence detection along with the voice assistant. Fewer devices to use, and easier to ensure the closest speaker is used.
Are you able to minimize the acknowledgments from the voice? For example, turn off the bedroom lights, and you get a simple beep and not a voice response.
Yes, please full tutorial! Does this change make use of the better speaker inside the device as opposed to like the little M5 stack that can be ordered right now with that tiny crummy speaker? This is exactly what I was looking for. Something that looks like an Alexa and has similar hardware functionality with a decent speaker but has the local Home Assistant guts inside of it too.
I agree with others - a full video on this would be great. Can it be used as a media player as well? That would be excellent if so - it wouldn't be terribly difficult to automate playing music I wouldn't think, that's probably the biggest thing holding me back from ditching my HomePod Mini
@@grahamshaw5531 Holy Moley... that's a lot more than I was expecting, even for 5 units. Dang. might have to hold off until I can find 4 mates with a spare Nest 2 each to try.
Unfortunately ordering custom pcb's means a minimum order of 5. It would be great if we could form a co-op buying these if we only need 1, so it doesn't cost $86 to end up with 4 extra boards
Can you confirm if it keeps the DSP & Amp from the nest? The reason the Nest Audio products sound as good as they do is because of the DSP processing to the audio, hoping that is kepy post mod.
we need the complete board, our region support Vietnamese language before but now Google only support English, this maybe a life saver for milion Google Home mini in Vietnam.
There was the pop up comment that the speed is determined by the language and hardware model. What did you mean by hardware model? Like the actual physical hardware model of the swapped out google nest?
Mark, what options did you choose when ordering? the first selection asks for Only PCB / PCB+Assembly once the above is chosen, there are multiple items that need to be selected Edge connector Solder Mask Surface Finish Silkscreen thanks
Is most of the latency on the device side, or whatever is happening on the home assistant server? I know running a lot of the voice stuff on GPUs is way faster so if all that occurs on a well specd remote machine, would that result in quicker responses, or does the satellite hardware play a big role?
I was expecting a jailbreak flash solution when i clicked on the video. But this is quite neet. The ESP32 manages to do voice recognition on its own, or does it send it to the home assistant hub for decoding?
Do you get false positives with this PCB? I've been getting so many (at least 1 every hour) on the ATOM 5 with the Alexa wake word so I've unplugged it 3 weeks ago and haven't used since. It's in my office so was getting quite distracting. Haven't found a way to reduce false positives unfortunately.
It's a great little project if you have some lying around. I would wait and watch how it develops as there may be more releases of the PCBs and there's still plenty to do on the software side.
yes full setup please...this sounds like it would get me back into HA

Oh the progress so far has been incredible and is huge credit to the whole Home Assistant team! Excited to see where it goes next!

I'd love to see this extended to Amazon Echos an Echo dots too! What a cool project!
That would be cool! I have lots of echos I could repurpose
Me too. Plenty of echo dots I could repurpose. This (voice) would be the last hurdle for me to be able to switch to HA and be fully local.
Also, longtime watcher, never commenter. Yes, I would LOVE a tutorial on this. This project is like a dream come true!
oooo! This is a very neat project. I think it will be especially nice for some that may have already have Google Nest Mini accessories such as wall mounts.
Hey Mark, another great video. thanks. Would definitely be keen to see you do a full start to finish video for this one. Keep the vids rolling
Appreciated thank you :)
Yes please, do a detailed video. Thanks
It would be awesome if they did a drop in PCB replacement for Echo dots as well. I think that would be my final hurdle for switching to HA.
If someone creates a PCB for the echo I will definitely be checking it out :)
@@MarkWattTech I'll be waiting for it.👍
Another who would love a full video. Maybe you can get a discount code from the suppliers 😉
yes, full video would apreciated
Thanks Mark. I would like to see a full video on the conversion.
Full setup video would be awesome!
I love this sort of videos.
Offcourse i (we) want a howto video.
Keep up the good work
As in the shorter community spotlight type thing? :)
100% we need the full video

My Atom echoes haven't yet seen the light of day. Picked up a few and they have all sat in the draw of shame 😬
+1 full setup!
I might have to try this for myself.

Yes please. Full setup
Would be great if there was an Echo version!
I have two dead Echos I could repurpose. Don't think it would be that difficult to transplant, it has 4 buttons and some LEDs...
I'm actually an Amazon guy so would love to see this too. The designs are nicer and I prefer having the clicky buttons :)
OMG!!! I want this!

I'm wondering whether this could be inserted into a "nice real" speaker like a Donner or a JBL Go.
@@Alessandro--- yeah, that would be cool too. I just like the idea of keeping it small.
This repurposes the google speaker :)
At the moment it's not able to use Piper TTS which is one thing I really want for the nicer sounding voices.
That's amazing! How much does it cost? I'm not seeing the cost on pcbway... it seems like I would have to make an account to see it.
US $57 for a pack of 5, $84 for a pack of 10.

What is the price for the PCB'S?
5 PCB's are $25 US. Sending to Europe, also $25 :/

Heya :)
Sorry! I meant hardware that your voice related services run on. For example if you did this all on a Pi it would be significantly slower
I need a 3.5mm headphone jack output on this PCB. Does this exist? How can I add it? How is the microphone on this board??
It would be nice for echo dot devices
I would love to test this if someone creates a PCB for echo dots :)
I'm curious is it possible to replace with an rpi based board, with an m.2 socket and a Google coral tpu?
Does this only work with a google nest mini or could you use an older Google Mini?
Im not 100% sure as I dont own an original to test. If the dimensions, speaker connection and other connections are in the same place it should work.

Its a great little pcb.
The processing is all done on your HA instance.
This is amazing.
Now… how about one for all my Echo Dot Gen 2s?
That would be awesome!
Can this also be used to play media/as multiroom audio if using something like Music Assistant?
I doubt the audio quality would be good enough as the ESP processing power is not great for such a task.
