I'm not a Notre Dame fan but Marcus Freeman is an amazing coach and person. He got that team playing above their potential. And even when they praise him, he's all about redirecting it back to his team.
Also in the first drive of the game they got stopped at the 2 and settled for a FG. And obviously at the end there that pass was so incredibly ill-advised. Like bro just take the sack and go to OT
PSU rushed for -3 yards in the 3rd Qtr. That changed the tide. AL Golden and Mike Denbrock made the necessary second half adjustments and got the W!! Great win!!! GO IRISH ☘️!!!

I love that Brian Kelly is sitting at home watching ND make it to the natty. But here’s some things I’ll be forever grateful for to Kelly: - NDs current nutrition, and S&C program (linemen were losing 30 pounds on average over the course of a season before him) - Field turf and Jumbotron/Stadium Experience - Practice and Training facility modernization - assistant coach pay - hiring Marcus Freeman before OSU did Without those things, ND isn’t where they’re at today. He had to constantly threaten the academic/admin side of ND to get them on par with the rest of the things top level programs had been doing for years. He modernized the program, but couldn’t come close to building the culture and winning mentality Freeman has fostered.
Agreed 100%. Numerically, Kelly is a high tier coach. He did amazing work at Notre Dame and only fools would disparage that. I think where Kelly fell short was in the abstractions of leadership and development. Not that his excuses are wrong, but he's an excuse guy. With him it always felt like "If we can just turn the corner, and get the best on-paper-team in the country... we will win the national championship". In retrospect that's kind of crazy. ND is a bit prohibitive regarding academic rigor ... South Bend is not Austin or Eugene or LA or Miami. For the Irish to win a championship again -- they're going to need to overperform at points. Freeman is already doing it. He seems to instil 'belief' and 'a will' in the players. I think Kelly would say those were important ...then maybe roll his eyes a bit. Kelly would win a national championship with the best team in the country. Now I don't think this is the year, but I do believe that Marcus Freeman and his crew could win with the 2nd best....5th best... 7th best team in the country. I have way more faith that Freeman's irish can win games they 'should' lose. Kelly was good at getting the Irish back to a point where they 'should' win this or that game .... but the second they were overmatched. You knew it wasn't going to happen.
BRIAN KELLY is an arrogant ass who abandoned Notre Dame in the midst of a playoff run for riches. He is 100% RESPONSIBLE for costing ND THREE SEASONS worth of victories when Notre Dame self-reported a never-before academic scandal on his watch. There are other wounds we need not discuss, but I thank God everyday that SOB left for LSU. Lou Holtz had the class to move on before breaking Knute Rockne’s all time wins record, but not that self-serving unlikable bastard Kelly. It won’t be long before Tiger fans run him out on a rail.
They lost to Marshall and NIU the last two seasons, you get away with it because you play mostly cupcakes in the regular season and only have to get up for 1 or 2 big games each season instead of week in and week out tough games
Appreciate you, brother Pate. I know there isn’t any animosity in the picks against us. And yes, we wouldn’t have it any other way against OSU/Texas. Don’t disappoint us.
@@rodgermiller8980 that interception may have big enough to count as three. I feel bad for the penn state qb but man that was an awful decision. If I was James Franklin I would have a punching bag with Drew Allar’s face.
Josh, THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING TO PICK AGAINST ND! I know you will do it again next week so I thank you for doing that ahead of time. We need your energy!
ND won this game by having all the things that NIL cant buy. Guts, physicality, confidence, mental toughness, believing in their team mates, loving each other and an outstanding young coach. They are the epitome of what made college football great for so many years. Im not a ND fan but i feel the need to say, thank you Notre Dame, not just because you won, but the manner in which you did it.
Love that u brought up Brian Kelly sitting at home, because with Kelly, I never felt like he thought they would win the big game.& it showed. Marcus Freeman always thinks they can win the big games & it shows, you said , the will to win, ND has it .
I was texting my dad and all the South Bend townies I grew up with before the game. Told them I had never been so confident heading into a big game before. Never doubted we would win. NEVER felt that way under Brian Kelly.
Probably because ND statistically has the 3rd best secondary in college football and when you have the best TE in college football and a handful of other TEs and RBs that can catch the ball, you play to your strengths. Penn State had almost double total rushing yards instead. Does it really matter how many WRs caught a pass when both teams ended up with 5.2 yards per play? ND threw two interceptions, but Penn State's one was significantly more impactful. The box score, eye test and final score all support the same thing. It was a great, even, tough, close game that only one team can win. What's it going to take for college football fans to be entertained.
@@themichaelbrandonwho says he wasn’t entertained? Pointing out a glaring flaw that Penn State has had for multiple years doesn’t imply he didn’t enjoy the game.
Loved the way ND competed. After Leonard went down in Q2 down by 10 a lot of teams would have folded, but they never flinched. That 3 yd TD where an injured Jeremiyah Love simply refused to be denied summed up their season to this point.
Ifs and buts aren't candy and nuts. If this happened, if that happened, yada, yada, yada. I could go on with "what if's" about ND too. What if there wasn't a horrible PI call? What if ND's tight end didn't lose his balance on his way to the end zone? Yada, yada. yada...
Notre dame had injuries across the entire team. And a kicker who is 50/50 behind the 40. They played Indiana number 1 run defense and Georgia who was bigger than Penn. now they beat Penn while having the FLU! Bro WHAT. That’s absolutely insane
As an Irshman and a Father I think some strong character praises be given to Marcus Freeman. Just read a story about him I didn't know. He's a father of 6. Yes, that's right 6! He gives a ton of credit to his wife and support for raising them as he coaches. He even has her bring some of the kids to practices and let them run around and play, so his players can see he's more than just a coach, but show them he's a father and a husband. That's honorable. And that's at 39 years old. Take note young gentlemen. Because he's not just coaching football, but coaching on how to be husbands and fathers. Kudos to you Marcus Freeman! I tip my hat to you Sir. Great job and keep that mindset for young men to see and witness. I pray your faith and strength be honored in your final game.
ND coach Marcus Freeman has my respect. Winning with less talent and a lot of injuries is difficult to do, especially in the playoffs. I am very impressed with all the coaches. Also impressed with the fight and grit of this team.
@@Neskuspicking against them and saying something nice about the team are 2 different things my friend. He’s not shitting on them, he just thinks they’re not as good as the competition and thus, would lose. He was wrong and he’s humble about it.
ND’s adjustment for the second half was outstanding. A stagnant offense in the 1st half Woke up in the 2nd by their unconventional way, through the air and downfield. They had more explosive plays, made them when needed and capitalized on a Crucial Mistake by Allar. This game had OT written all over it until that bad Pass. Good for the Irish, they deserved to Win. Great Game though
To be fair; PSU whipped them. and they got blessed at the right times, just like in the UGA game. Props to them but this is not an elite team, they just win gritty games. They won’t be able to stop the train named OSU that’s coming for them
@ PSU whipped them in the 1st half. The 2nd half was an entirely different story. In the second half, PSU rushed for 63 yards, ND rushed for 101; Allar threw for 135 in the entire game while Leonard threw for over 140 yds in the second half alone. 3rd down %, ND (11-17), PSU (3-11). ND outscored PSU 24-14 in the second half. This is why the game is played for four quarters my man. The lions played a solid first half but ND weathered the storm in the second. Your team lost, go eat your humble pie, and have a nice day now.
As a Penn Stater, congrats Notre Dame. Heartbreaking for us. Drew had a bad night (interception & miss pass at 2 yard line) and that corner falling down hurt. Notre Dame deserved this win.
It's because Marcus Freeman is a guy that played under Jim Tressel. His coaching identity reflects that. His team reflects that. This Notre Dame team reminds me a lot of that 2002 Ohio State championship team
Josh... even though you drive me crazy sometimes I always appreciate your content. Thank you for pointing out some things that have been lost on ND's team throughout these playoffs and thank you for giving this team the props that they deserve. The injuries scare the shit out of me going into the national championship game but regardless of the outcome, I F***ing love this team and their fight and LEGITIMATE next man up metality. Cheers!
It would be crazy with everyone talking about who’s the better conference gonna be in the future and Notre Dame ends up winning the National Championship. Taking out the SEC champs and Big 10 Runner-up and possibly SEC runner-ups or BIG10 powerhouse in the process
I don't think it's completely out of the question. Their offense is nothing special but their D is legit. If they can slow OSU down enough and get a couple turnovers you never know. Of course we're assuming OSU wins, if Texas manages to win then I think the Irish can definitely beat Texas
Shout out to Brian “I want to be in an environment where I have the resources to win a national championship” Kelly. Weird he hasn’t gotten to the playoffs since. Makes ya wonder…
Hes always humble in the results of his pick and explains why and what happened very well. I had penn st. also. But ND was by no means destined to lose. They are fighting irish
Mental toughness is now a requirement to win an NCAA Football Championship for the first time in its very long history because of expanded playoff format.
The way freeman nervously said, "we've gotta get some guys healthy this week, let's just enjoy this right now" tells me they know they are probably running into an Ohio state buzzsaw Still an excellent season regardless of what happens
Something else to remember about penn state is that they did not get Oregon, Indiana, or Michigan on their 2024 schedule. Next season they will lose the tight end and play Ohio State, Oregon, and Indiana, and they will miss the playoffs.
They don’t play Michigan next year so why even mention they didn’t play them next year 😂. 10-2 makes playoffs, they need to split home games Indiana and Oregon which is not super unlikely. Indiana roster is similar to SMU which they handled
Penn State lost three games, each by one score, to probably the three best teams in college football this year. They deserved better, but a national semifinal is not too shabby.
They were a good team but how did they deserve better, they only made the BIG10 title by having an easier regular season than Ohio State & then they were gifted the easiest playoff path, they were well compensated for being a good team & blew their shot
Unlike the other people who have commented, as a diehard ND fan, I have to give PSU their props. Because I'm an ND fan, I've been conditioned to getting my hopes up before a game only to have them destroyed by the end of the first half. PSU was controlling the game and when they went up by 10, I honestly didn't know how ND could come back just based on how well PSU controlled every aspect of the game thus far. Admittedly, PSU played much, much better than I thought they would and I am relieved for ND to come out of this game as the winner. If PSU keeps up this kind of recruiting and gameplay, then they will be a force to be reckoned with for the foreseeable future. Cheers!
As a ND fan Josh, I have to say that I appreciate your perspectives. You give credit where credit is due, and call out things that should be called out. Nice work. Go Irish!

I know Pate isn’t an ND hater because every time he picks against them and they win, he doesn’t make excuses or try to downplay it. He admits he was wrong and congratulates them
When you were talking about ND being down by 10. On Tuesday, you said in your last video, "If ND goes down 10-0, they will not come back and lose the game" Don't be 2 faced here sir. Own up and admit that you have no idea what any team in the CFP is about
Every int he threw was an awful throw right to the defenders. His bad play had more to do with it than awesome plays made by the defenders. Don't get me wrong the defense did what it had to do but drew made it very easy for them by throwing it right at them multiple times or missing his running back for a wide open td. He played worse than they played good. If penn state had an even slightly better qb they win that game.
Poor coaching decisions as well. Somebody was telling him to take those aggressive throws. Just as stupid as Kirby/Bobo telling Gunner to do the same thing. JP, note that. That's 2 teams in a row against ND making STUPID decision with little time on the clock.
He has a bad game against nearly every good team he plays, when he played well against Oregon people thought their offense was trending but it was just a concerning sign for Oregon’s defense that got carved up a few weeks later
I’ve seen a couple comments saying this wasn’t Franklin’s fault. This was 100% on Franklin. It was his decision to go aggressive and try to put the game away by putting it on the shoulders of his QB who clearly can’t carry the team. Take it to overtime where you don’t have to worry about time and put it in the hands of those that can carry the team, Singleton, Allen and Warren. His strengths were the run game and defense. Give yourself 25 yards to go vs however many they needed when the interception was thrown and then trust your defense to put the game away. Yes Franklin didn’t throw the pick, but he put his QB in a position to throw the pick knowing he’s not good under pressure like that.
I agree totally. I don't think they're gonna be able to drive down the field to attempt the fg. I don't think this offense is set up like that.Especially when a wide receiver didn't catch a ball the whole game. That touchdown where the d b slipped and fell or either he got shook out of his shoes hurt as well
3 leaf clover. 4 leaf clovers are made up and aren't part of Irish traditions or folklore. Not that 4 leaf clovers don't exist just don't mean anything in Irish culture
In high school in the 60's I had three teams: Alabama, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma. I've had much success over the years with all of these teams. I've been focused on Bama since about 91, that national championship game against Miami who were a 30 point favorite, but Stallings Crimson Tide won. Now that Bama is gone, and after seeing that amazing Irish game against Georgia, I now say Roll Irish.
GREAT win...been a ND fan for 50+ years...the team feeds off of Freeman and plays for him. Leonard is the most competitive QB ND has ever had. The hit he took late in the 1st half I thought he would not come back but he toughed it out. One thing that NO ONE has ever commented on is at the NIU game that I attended Leonard took a hard shot to his non-throwing shoulder, came out but played the 2nd half. To protect Leonard he did run a single designed run or scramble the whole 2nd half but he admitted he did not play well in the passing game. . Not an excuse since ND's defense had trouble stopping the run that game but the whole ND narrative would be different as I think ND could have squeaked by that game. In the end however that loss became such a motivating factor that maybe it was best they lost that game. They have different players step up every game this season. Congrats to Jeter, a VERY patched up offensive line and an unbelievable play by Christian Gray!!!
The absolute key factor in this game is drew allar. Winning the turnover battle and rushing for 200 yards…. Any other starting power 4 QB could’ve done enough to win that game. Just an atrocious performance by drew allar
Badly missed a 3 yard TD pass to Singleton in the 1st, overthrew him in the 2nd qtr on a wide open wheel route where he would've scored, threw into triple coverage for an INT but was bailed out by a PI call, then the inexplicable throw with 50 seconds left for an INT and a lateral out of bounds to finish it off. One of the worst big game performances I've ever seen from a QB.
@ I would agree but u must’ve forgot his games against Ohio State & Michigan last year lol, especially Ohio State. The box score for the OSU game doesn’t do it justice cause PSU scored a garbage time TD against a prevent defense to boost his stats but I swear those r the 2 worst games I’ve ever seen from a QB on any level. Before the garbage time TD he was 10/32 for 118 & 0TDs, even ending the game with the garbage time padding got him to 18/42 for 191 & 1TD with a 30 QBR. Believe it or not he took a step forward this year in big games including tonight lol, knowing ur QB has that kinda track record makes the aggressive final drive completely unacceptable tho
This game is a prime example of the sheer grit that Notre dame has going into the playoffs. seeing them down a bunch of starters and still pulling off some of the biggest wins for their program is proving the capabilities that this team has.
Terrible, you guys have no clue about college football, literally!!!! The poor kid tried to make a huge play and it didn't work out, literally!!!! Why don't you people go back and look at all the insanely amazing td passes he made this season???? WE ARE, enough said
Good for Marcus. Beyond the win, we're all especially thankful for him ignoring the reporter's race-baiting question afterward. Coaching and players are the story, not skin pigmentation.
Penn State had a window the size of a front door on a house this season. They didn’t have to play any of the big dogs to make it this far in the tournament, and several big dogs weren’t even in the picture, and what ones were, all pretty much got lined up against each other, with Oregon and Ohio State, Notre Dame knocking off UGA, and now Ohio State and Texas set to knock one or the other off. The window was massive for them this year, with how everything was lined up. All they had to do was beat two definitely not top 12 teams, and then beat a Notre Dame team that lost to NIU this season. And in spite of how large that window of opportunity was, they still found a way to slam their fingers in it like it was a 1980s pickup truck door.
People keep bringing up that NIU game without the ability to see that it was a fluke with a QB that hadn't practiced in preseason with a new team because of injury. Do you honestly think that if those two teams played again that ND wouldn't boat-race them?
Maybe you need to reevaluate your criteria for determining which is a "big dog." In one sentence you say ND defeated a big dog Georgia, but in your next sentence say all Penn State had to do was beat a ND team that lost to N. Illinois. So which is it? Is it out of the realm of possibility that Penn State is actually a "big dog?" They did just play an extremely close game in the CFP semifinals. It's the same rhetoric when Michigan lost to Georgia in the CFP semis and again when they lost to TCU talking about how their window of opportunity to win a national championship had closed. We know how that worked out. And as for your "big dogs" all getting lined up against each other comment, that's exactly what happens in the playoffs.
Since NIU Notre Dame has won 13 straight by an average score of about 42-10 (not counting garbage points put up by Louisiana, Virginia, USC, Indiana (twice).
I’ve been a ND fan since I was a kid and my uncle was a professor there. Went to probably a dozen football games. The best was #1 Florida St vs #2 ND with ND pulling off a big win. Early 90s.
James Franklin truly is a hero. When the lights got bright and the noise got loud and Notre Dame’s begging them to take it, he says “NO” and snatches defeat from the jaws of victory like a real man.
Notre Dame: I want to lose (2 interceptions) Penn State: No I want to lose (Blown Coverage td) Notre Dame: No I want to lose (4 and out) Drew Allar: 😎 My time has come (dumbest interception in history at the 40 yard line)
Notre Dame has been down their: Starting LT Backup LT (now) Starting C Starting (AA) CB Starting (AA) DT Starting Edge Backup Edge Starting NT (Cross) is walking wounded J. Love is walking wounded.
Those are two players on another level. As an ND fan, I know all about Love, but wow, Carter is a beast! He will be an immediate impact player in the NFL. The fact that both played as hard as they did with significant injuries just shows how truly special they are.

I love that he left nd to win a natty and gang made it to the playoffs while freeman has won more big time games than Kelly’s whole career at nd
They lost to Marshall and NIU the last two seasons, you get away with it because you play mostly cupcakes in the regular season and only have to get up for 1 or 2 big games each season instead of week in and week out tough games
Refuse to lose. That was the mentality ND played with in the second half.
Appreciate you, brother Pate. I know there isn’t any animosity in the picks against us. And yes, we wouldn’t have it any other way against OSU/Texas. Don’t disappoint us.
Notre Dame passing for almost 270 was definitely not on my bingo card.
Mine either, but they did,and losing the turnover battle wasnt on there either
With a Alabama QB....Roll Tide !

That was old school football. If you watched entire game you know what I mean. Thank God football like that still exists some where.

Josh, THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING TO PICK AGAINST ND! I know you will do it again next week so I thank you for doing that ahead of time. We need your energy!
A broke clock is right twice a day. Careful what you wish for😂
ND won this game by having all the things that NIL cant buy.
You guys were calling for Freemans head after that NIU game....don't pretend he's the second coming now.
ND also spent nearly the same as UGA, OSU, Oregon and TX. So let’s not act like its also not about NIL
Lol except the qb nice try !!!!!!
get in a poweer conference, free ride most of time.
That’s really ghey. They paid $2 million in NIL for their QB. And I say this as a ND fan.
NIU? Marshall?
@@Booster6969 Clemson? Indiana? Georgia? Penn St? Playing in the natty in ten days???
Penn state didn't complete 1 single pass to a WR the entire game
Probably because ND statistically has the 3rd best secondary in college football and when you have the best TE in college football and a handful of other TEs and RBs that can catch the ball, you play to your strengths. Penn State had almost double total rushing yards instead. Does it really matter how many WRs caught a pass when both teams ended up with 5.2 yards per play? ND threw two interceptions, but Penn State's one was significantly more impactful. The box score, eye test and final score all support the same thing. It was a great, even, tough, close game that only one team can win. What's it going to take for college football fans to be entertained.
Their wr are trash 🗑

Loved the way ND competed. After Leonard went down in Q2 down by 10 a lot of teams would have folded, but they never flinched. That 3 yd TD where an injured Jeremiyah Love simply refused to be denied summed up their season to this point.
Penn and Notre Dame were so evenly matched that if it wasn’t for the final interception we would still be playing overtime.
Bonehead franklin run the damn ball
The other interception they called PI on was ridiculous call
Ifs and buts aren't candy and nuts.
If this happened, if that happened, yada, yada, yada. I could go on with "what if's" about ND too. What if there wasn't a horrible PI call? What if ND's tight end didn't lose his balance on his way to the end zone? Yada, yada. yada...
Notre dame had injuries across the entire team. And a kicker who is 50/50 behind the 40.
They played Indiana number 1 run defense and Georgia who was bigger than Penn. now they beat Penn while having the FLU! Bro WHAT.
That’s absolutely insane
It's amazing to hear Josh Pete give Notre Dame so much respect. Go Irish 🍀
Notre Dame fans need to thank Josh Pate and Pat McAfee these are the only two guys I know all season long that kept picking Notre Dame to lose!!
Nope. Joel Klatt is worse. He picked NAVY to beat Notre Dame.
3-11 vs 11-17 on 3rd down favoring notre dame is what won them that game. That’s an insane stat difference
As a ND fan .... not surprised by the final score .... I am pleasantly surprised that the Irish prevailed. They are so banged up.
respect to Josh because he's one of the only media guys all year who actually had nice things to say about ND and didn't write them off.
And yet is 0-5 in picking against them
@@Neskuspicking against them and saying something nice about the team are 2 different things my friend.
His model actually had ND -3 and he chose to go against it. 👏🏾 LOVE THIS TEAM! GO IRISH ☘️!!!

Something else to remember about penn state is that they did not get Oregon, Indiana, or Michigan on their 2024 schedule.
Next season they will lose the tight end and play Ohio State, Oregon, and Indiana, and they will miss the playoffs.
Not only that, they (we) still have Allar and Franklin. Also Abdul Vader gone.
They don’t play Michigan next year so why even mention they didn’t play them next year 😂.
10-2 makes playoffs, they need to split home games Indiana and Oregon which is not super unlikely. Indiana roster is similar to SMU which they handled
What a frick’n game!!! Way to go Notre Dame…👊🏻🏈
Notre Dame lost 1 game, by 2 points, after missing two FGs, to an 8-5 team that won their bowl game.
Sorry, but losing by 8 is hardly "one score".
Cheers!

Gotta hand it to ya! You are definitely consistent in your picks against the Irish!
I love this channel you guys always clutch
Drew had a bad game and its cost them the game
Irish defense had something to do with it
Every int he threw was an awful throw right to the defenders. His bad play had more to do with it than awesome plays made by the defenders. Don't get me wrong the defense did what it had to do but drew made it very easy for them by throwing it right at them multiple times or missing his running back for a wide open td. He played worse than they played good. If penn state had an even slightly better qb they win that game.
mostly bad decision-making. The INT at the end.. completely ill-advised and unnecessary. Just take the sack and go to OT
First year watching your channel. Great analysis and insight!
That touchdown where the d b slipped and fell or either he got shook out of his shoes hurt as well
Accurate. I kept telling ppl all week that Franklin would fck it up somehow and he did

In high school in the 60's I had three teams: Alabama, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma. I've had much success over the years with all of these teams.
I believe Leonard had 2 turnovers resulting in 10 points for Penn State. Do not be too hard on Allar.
In the last two games, ND won the middle 8 minutes, I think this is critical.
Drew Allar cost Penn St that game. He played absolutely horrendous the entire night.
Franklin shouldn’t have trusted him on that final drive
