      There is no approved NFHS signal for this particular violation. Dealer's Choice!! 😜😜😜

    The ball is not dead when it strikes the floor. If there were still time left on the clock in this scenario and everything else was the same, any player on the floor could have gained possession. The ball would not have been blown dead merely because it struck the floor. The goal would not count because it was not a try and the horn sounded before the ball went in the basket.

    What is the official's violation signal for an offensive player leaving the court to run around a double screen on the baseline? The offensive player has left the court and then gains an advantage when he returns to the court on the other side of the screen. We stop play to call a violation. What's our signal?

    Don't Forget If A Def Player "Willingly" In the Ref's Opinion Slaps The Backboard Causing it To Oscillate Etc It Is A Player Tec Foul ! I Have A Play I Used As Interpreter.. Team A Down by 1 Point In State Champ Game ..Lays The Ball On The Rim With 2 Secs Left in 4th Q Def B1 Slaps The Backboard So Hard Causing The Ball To Fall Off as The Horn Is Just Now Sounding ? It Is ONLY A Tec Foul 2 Shots ! Period ..Not Basket Int. 😁

    I messed up last weekend. Kid shot a ball at the end of the half. Got the shot off on time. Horn sounded mid ball flight. And than the ball got wedged in the rim. I called a jump ball and switched the arrow twice because of the jump ball and than pos. Change at half. I was wrong!. Should of been no jump ball on the shot. Just a 1 POS. Arrow flip.

    Great content as always, Greg!! Question on the last play with the defensive player batting the ball back to the offensive player in the backcourt...does the 10 sec count continue or does a new count begin? Does the defensive player's batting of the ball in the frontcourt constitute a change of possession? If not, then I would be inclined to think that the count continues, but curious to hear your thoughts and explanation. Thanks again for your dedication to helping us all improve!

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  3 года назад +1

      As it often does, status comes into play. The team in control must achieve frontcourt status by the 10-second count expiring. When the defensive player with front Court status contact the ball the ball games front-court status. When the offensive player catches the ball in the backcourt a new 10-second count should begin. Status. Always status.

    Hi Greg, great stuff as usual. However, I have a question about the simultaneous free throw violation answer. 9-1-3 a-h list the actions resulting in a violation. Part a reads "a. He/she shall throw within 10 seconds to cause the ball to enter the basket or touch the ring before the free throw ends" Is the interpretation that this section has two components, one within 10 seconds and two must enter the basket or touch the ring? I recall a discussion some years back about the free throw air ball violation where the consensus was it wasn't actually a violation, but rather a live/ dead ball issue.

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  2 года назад

      That's a wild interpretation! I don't believe that that is correct. I don't believe it is supported by case play even though the rule itself may seem to offer room for that interpretation

    Greg, on play #6 (slapping the backboard on an attempt to block a shot), does it matter if the ball is coming down when they actually slap the backboard?

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  3 года назад +1

      No, not by rule. The action of slapping as the result of an attempt to block the shot is legal without caveat.

    Greg, back to the 0.3 rule... would a two-handed volleyball set be a legal “tip”? Also can a defensive player be called for goaltending after 0:00?

    • @BetterOfficials
      @BetterOfficials  3 года назад +1

      Good question!
      In the first scenario a player may use a volleyball like tap with two hands. But just like in volleyball they would not be allowed to catch by flexing the hands if the officials ruled that to be momentarily catching the ball. But they could use one finger one finger on each hand the size of their hands like a karate chop the back of their hands Etc.
      A player can commit a basket interference or goaltending violation after time has expired. Yes. That is a true statement. If a try is in-flight when the clock hits zero, the ball is still live.

    In a high school game last night here in Huntsville AL, the exact scenario starting at the 9:30 mark of this video occurred. Player A was attempting a shot, Player B in an attempt to block the shot before it reached its peak or was within the cylinder or ring, slapped the backboard forcibly causing the backboard and ring to move. The shot did not go in, the trail referee blew his whistle, gave the "basket interference" signal and awarded Player A's team 2 points. I had a friendly discussion with a couple of fans of Player A's team when I said by rule, that was a legal play and they disagreed. Has the rule changed for the 2021-2022 season? If so, then I was incorrect in my discussion with the other fans. Ultimately, that play didn't have any bearing on the outcome of the game.

    Enjoy your videos. Very well done. Question....I was watching a college game this afternoon and a player dunked the ball and was fouled by an opposing player. The bucket counted, which I agreed with and the player went to the free throw line for the plus one. The player's coach and players were taping their heads with a flat hand in an up and down motion. Were they asking for something else? Would appreciate a clarifying explanation. Thanks.

      Did the coach get thrown out? If the coach protests a game because of a rule interpretation... I don’t think he can be thrown out...
      Here’s a good one... a player leaves the playing area after receiving two player technical fouls. Does the bench receive a technical for the player leaving the floor?
      Greg, I know you’ve officiated for a while... but back when I played things we’re different... Referees had a shorter leash... I played in a state where we don’t get to vote on rule changes.
      Why does NFHS have a problem with having a shot clock? They play with a shot clock from 14 years old and up in every other country in the world. The U.S. is the only country where secondary school basketball players do not use a shot clock. (In most places they play with a 24 second shot clock).
      My opinion is stop doing this by opinion. Get some data from the 10 states and DC (Georgia will institute by 2023), that already use a shot clock and go from there... I hate stalling basketball... four corners is so 1955...
