- Halloween Graveyard Fence - Fence Columns Decoration Idea See our DIY Halloween cemetery fence and Halloween graveyard decoration ideas. Need a Halloween cemetery fence, archway entrance, pillars, or columns to protect your Halloween decorations and spooky DIY Halloween props. Make this haunted house fence and scary Halloween columns & pillars. In this behind the scenes video we share the construction and fabrication process in designing and creating our Halloween entrance gate columns, archway, pillars, and cemetery iron looking fencing sections for our home yard haunt graveyard. We walk you through step by step and talk about materials and all the steps we took to finish these projects. No Graveyard is complete without tombstones and a fence to go around it. Its also a great way to protect and help keep all those precious gravestones and motorized or pneumatic props safe and secure. They make great places to mount ghouls and skeletons to help scare the trick or treaters. I have attached several different channel references that are great examples to help you decide your design and tips to build our own fence and columns.
These pillars and columns turned out good enough to fool the city into thinking they were real and built without a permit to make them. They are constructed of 3/4" plywood, strips of 1" x 3" pine, 2" white foam carved and sculpted to look as though its old, cracked, and run down. The have rear doors with vents that lock to house electrical equipment like stereo speakers and wiring for lighting. We mounted 4' work lights with black light bulbs to give the yard a glow. They were painted with a grey color and aged with watered down black. For the brick look we used fake brick paneling from the hardware store and cut miters on the corners. We used 1/8" x 2" steel angle brackets that were mounted to the sides of the pillars to mount the fencing too by using 3/8" through bolts Making a secure and strong connection. We hope you enjoy and get some ideas and inspirations for yours.

Thank you for another awesome tutorial video. I have never built columns but I sure want to...especially after watching your videos. You two are so creative, funny, and super inspiring.
I wish my hubby was into Halloween like the both of you. It's hard being a one woman band...lo. I love how well you work together- true love, enjoying life, keep up the great work!!!!
They are so damn good- will be using this when I go to build mine! Carving out a tombstone while listening to the soothing sounds of Hollywood Haunter- thanks guys for what you do-
I used the re-bar method for the past few years, but I like your bracket better. Thanks for the detailed look,
You guys are awesome! Nice inside look into dancing like a dork. I have added upgrades to my columns for the last three years I think. It gives me something to work on without building something new that takes up more space LOL
How could I have missed THIS one??? Wonderful work. as always...
The lights you installed in your columns was a great idea, Jeana and I love watching you work on yours inside your house in the past years. It's awesome!
AWESOME!!!! You really need to do this as a side business.
Wow!!! The columns are terrific
Capricorn thanks there are so many great ideas and inspirations out there now a person could really make some cool ones incorporating the different elements together.
Very nice columns.
Also you guys are amazing at what you do. Loved seeing you on the great halloween fright fight
Not a problem guys! Thanks for the dimensions! Just got the new laptop charger...and i ended up finishing my mini columns last week. I made the smaller ones 10" x 45" tall..and the corner one's 13" x 55" tall :) But thanks for the help, it was good to compare mine to yours dimension wise!!
Very nice! I love that you guys pay do much attention to detail. I think it adds so much. Great job
One night? ONE night? You kiddin'? My yard goes up the end of September!!
Loved the vid and the dancing at the end!
Love your columns and graveyard fence! Nice job!
You 2 are so funny! Your Columns are so pretty in a creepy way they look great. We did plywood but with 2x4x8 what was I thinking they are so heavy & the drive way is not flat Nightmare to put not. Great vid!!!
love it, my yard is too small for that, , you guys are awesome!
That was "Squirrel". What was I going to say? Oh yeah. Really nice "cat". Crap, I keep getting "dog". Well you get the idea. Really nice work and great tut on showing how the fence and columns came together. Keep up the good work and great videos.
Great columns! Might have to copy them. Lol
whoah! Talented in many ways.
thank you very much =)
Thanks, until now we have stored it on the side yard and in our garage stacked nice and tight! We set up around the 1st of Oct. so we get to enjoy the decorations for a month of so. We work on projects together a few months out of the year and that's where we have the most fun. =)
You two are awesome creaters! Wish I could have been there to go through your haunt. Keep up the great work :)
Love the columns, I think I'm going to build some this year. Keep up the good work.
Great video guys!
how in the world did you drill those holes on the plywood at an angle for the pvc? and how did you make it even out at the edges without any hinges? I've been looking for this kind of fence at an angle for so long, and you finally did it! but I dont know how, so.... HOW?!???!?
Thanks, funny we have a similar problem in our front yard with a slope so what I did one year is build these plywood wedges that match the angle of the ground. You can see them on our Set Up Day 2011. Ours are pretty heavy to but helps keep them from falling over.
Makes me want to rebuild all my stuff.
Awesome Thank you for sharing.
When I made my fence sections in 2007 I searched and searched for something to use as a finial and in the end found the best thing was...
fence finials, I bought 100 cast iron finials that look like the New Orleans Saints logo for $25 attached with a wood dowel turned out great
Sweet!!
I made a similar Pillars based off your guys.I hope all my props well are by this Saturday Oct 1. As Haunter you know even if i was building for next Octor it still wouldnt be enought time. Love your pillars!!! I wish mind looked even half as good. But they do sing the Halloween theme song when people walk up and the lights flash to the music as well. BTW you guys are the cutes couple ever!!!! I got some great ideas for my house this year. Thanks again for all your videos.
thank you 😄 it sounds like your pillars turned out great hope you get all your projects done before the big day!
You guys are ADORABLE and so TALENTED!!! I 'am wanting to start a graveyard fence w pillars asap so thanks for the ideas and the inspiration. Dude, thats too funny that the city thought it was all real. AWESOME!!! :)
Thanks so much for the feedback! If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask :)
Will do,thanks!
Somebody has some dance experience or watches waaaay too many Fred Astaire movies. Thanks for the tutorial and all the other haunter shout-outs for style.
lookin at this video for no reason. you know I just admire yours. But who in the hell thumbs this video down. How dare these A-holes! They must just be jealous. love you guys
Hey there stranger, it's all good not everyone is going to like us and how we do. What matters more to both of us is hearing from our wonderful Haunt friends like yourself. Hope your doing well, Does the FLESH have any Halloween projects in the works? Thanks for stopping by to say hello =)
Nothing spectacular but I am setting up the yard. I would like to do a crypt with the sliding lid. I'm just waiting on some parts to come in from China. hopefully it gets here before the big day
Nice detailed instructions for a nice peice :
The real question is... Where do you guys have room to store all this stuff the rest of the year?! hehehe
love all yalls stuff how to yall store all this stuff? all that work makes you wish Halloween is more then one day/night.
nice design on the pillars/columns. I see some comments about cost too much. I personally build about 3 props a year or improve the ones we have, it really doesn't cost that much, but storage is always a big concern
go to construction yards and pick up scrap wood if you can its free- just ask first to make sure its always smart- i picked up scrap wood today were putting a wooden fence up front to deter vandals, plus it'll look good
Great inside look. Thanks for posting. Do you put any weights in the columns or anchor system?
can't believe I hadn't seen this before.. sweet
kudos to Fordfalcon1962nblue for finding the Thief perp and trashing them. That's the one thing I've always hated ,when trying to have a Haunted House ,was the smart aleck that wanted to tear up stuff, or blow hard mouthing off.( I think really they're scared and trying to act tough to hide it ) Makes it bad for everyone else trying to enjoy.
Oh and good Job as usual HollywoodHaunter ! Peck
No the columns are pretty heavy because of the plywood they are made from plus when the fence is bolted together it doesn't go anywhere. I actually have a hard time tipping the columns over enough to get power cables under them when everything is assembled and at times have to take it back apart. The first year I placed re-bar into the ground for the fence to slide over to make more stable and I don't anymore cause it just isn't necessary.
nice behind the scenes and gina got one thing to say .....SQUIRREL!!!!!!!!....... stay focus LOL!! nice stay puff dance HFL!!!
Did you put anything on the fake brick panels to weatherproof it? I have just finished building mine and was wondering if there is anything I could do to make them last. I was thinking something like Thompsons water sealant. What do you guys think
and intresting story..we had both our black light bulbs stolen too back in 2007....had cameras, found out what kind of truck it was....came back a week or two later for new ones we had installed, saw them drive by on the camera, got ready, ran out and base ball batted the truck about 5 times, smashed the headlights out, hit the bed in a few times, but this was AFTER the criminal got zapped by 140 volts of hot wire coil springs we installed into our bulb sockets- lol
I am going to want to see the video of this! lol Sounds amazing!
its the first video on my channel- or type inf halloween vandal gets caught, or halloween karma, on my channel in the search box
You want to use our idea???!!! LOL! Yes please! Nothing makes us more excited then when we can help inspire other haunters. Sorry it's taking me so long on the motion sensor video. I haven't forgot and will try to get that up for you before Halloween...2015, okay maybe 16 ;) Can't wait to see them in your yard!
Hey guys... could you tell me some tips on how you cut and shaped the foam caps for the columns ? Amazing work!
Brian Griffith Hey Brian, when we carved the foam tops we started with lets say a solid piece or a couple pieces of foam glued together to make a 2' x 2' square that can be 6" or more thick. Then I found the center point on the top and using a straight edge and sharpie I drew lines from the center dot out to each corner giving me an X. Then with a horse or dog hair brush (the metal one with several rings with teeth) I filed each outside edge down staying flat with the brush and pulling toward myself. If you follow were the lines were and keep the center point the highest and the out side edge the lowest you will start to see a pyramid shape form. You just have to be careful and pretend the x lines are always there. Then I just used sand paper to smooth it all out. Let me know if I made sense or not, hope that helps give you an idea.
Hollywood Haunter thank you so much! yess you explained it well. also, are the bigger columns a perfect square or are they shorter on the sides? did you use 1 inch crown staples to staple it all together? you think i could use brad nails?
Hey guys I made the same columns you did and used the fake brick wall paneling and was wondering if you put Thompson water seal in on them to keep them protected from the rain

Hey Chris, do you mind if I copy your small columns for our haunt. These will go great with my large columns since the fronts are almost full brick, and they won't take forever to detail. P.S. Still waiting on your motion sensor how to video, lol. I know there are a few out there, but I'm sure yours are a notch above the rest.
How well does the brick wood hold up in rain?
Definitely going to take a stab at doing this!
I want to make 2 Pillars for my walk but need to use cheapest Materials possible for frame, is wood cheaper than PVC piping??
Sweet,first
How does the brick paneling hold up after being exposed to rain? I live in the midwest and thought about using it, but in fear of the rain we always get. Thanks
Actually pretty well. It swells up sometimes but it's still going strong. You can actually see them in their new home if you check out our recent Hellsir Cemetery video.
wheres a good place to buy or get foam or foam blocks to use when building things like this
Hey Chris, what are the dimensions of your mini columns? I'm starting mine now...and need something to go by! Thanks!
Sorry just getting this Ricky and if your still curious about the sizes of our columns I know on our Facebook we have an items for sale photo album and there are some dimensions with a tape measure with pictures. I think they are around 14" wide and 4' tall but I can't remember exactly. One way you could do it is to draw it out and try to design and make them in a size where you can get the most out of your material your using. Let us know if we can help with anything else. =)
I'm going to ask you a very personal question, hope you don't mind answering it...how much did all this cost you? ohh, love the video btw. u are really talented
Hey Peter thanks for the kind message, I can't remember how much we spent but I can tell you that most of the projects like this were built with materials free from craigslist or left over from other past projects. If you had to buy everything new from like a Home Depot I bet you would spend close to $250 Always check the the 70% off purple painted wood cart usually at the rear of a HD box store if you can, we save a lot of money that way. =)
Hollywood Haunter I asked because I am planning on making a low budget film and...hey, have you ever consider selling some of the stuff that you made. I will need a cemetery set for my project. maybe you can buld some tombs and some catacombs for me...
if you are interested you can email me at
peterjohnny.t@gmail.com, or my very personal email address ; unclejay.t@gmail.com
Still so inspired by you guys. Can I build the columns myself (a chick, with no construction experience)? Can I have Home Depot cut the plywood for me? How do I then "staple" them to form a column? I can do the artistic cosmetics. I made my first columns last year out of foam...I can, and will do better. We made our fence out of PVC (spray painted metallic black), linked with store-bought plastic chains, topped with hand-cut/hand-painted foam finials. Those were then linked to foam columns with 99 Cent Store skull door knockers and hot glue (melted in the setting So Cal sun). I only have 5 1/2 months left...getting excited/stressed. Thanks!
Wow sounds like you have been busy. You can have HD cut wood for you and you can staple or screw the plywood together. We have another video that shows some of the construction pictures of the columns and pillars. Thanks for watching =) Making Haunted House Fence Columns & Pillars
Not as busy as I'd like, but time's a tickin.' Thanks for your reply, and advice. Your videos are amazing...I thank you so much. I strive to achieve a graveyard like yours (and old-school Haunted Mansion). Not as much money or space, but my heart is SO into it. :) If it makes children cry and adults laugh, I'll have achieved my ghoul...goal. :)
I think all those little details are what make it really fun to create. Thanks for the comment
How do you guys get all your materials with this it spending a fortune
The best advice is craigslist, yard sales and thrift stores. We are constantly checking for updated ads. Home Depot and Lowes also have a discounted pile of building materials. Let your friends and family know what items you need, they may have it lying around their houses taking up space :)
Hollywood Haunter thanks this helped a lot
We have one it was called something else but I just renamed it, Thunder & Lightning Behind The Scenes check it out its a video we had fun making one night.
What material did u use on the gate for the decorative circle part. Also, what are the measurements for in between the poles & height? Thanks :)
the metal portion of the arch was one of those arches for weddings or gardens you see at several arts and crafts or nursery stores and then we add the wood portion to the under side. The fence was made in 4 foot sections and just under 4 foot high. We would connect a couple together so there was eight feet of fence between the pillars. We have some great photos on our Facebook page if your interested.
+Hollywood Haunter I think the other person wanted to know from what you made the decorative circles in the fence. I'm guessing 3" Pvc pipe
Yes, if that is what they were asking your correct. I think it may have even been 4" PVC pipe rings cut at about 3/4" to 1" thick. It's a lot of cuts and a lot of sanding sharp edges afterward but it adds another extra detail. Thanks teodelfuego!
+Hollywood Haunter thank you! Your video was fun and inspirational
where do you store all this stuff ,garage?
We have a video that shares our storage situation now to give you an idea
Halloween Hoarders: How To Store Your Haunt Wall Panels & Facades
you should see our attic- its packed full of decorations lol
where can you get the fake brick
we found it at lowes near the trim and moulding area, homedepot should be able to order it. the hardware store near us called do it center also has it. good luck =)
Thanks
OMFG How much u want for it
We sold it a couple years ago to a local haunted attraction. It's really neat because we can still visit and see it each year 😄
Aw, I'm bummed..
Can you make a tutorial on how to make it like that? I've always wanted an archway+fence set like that.
they dont make halloween stuff like they used to..mainly WAL MART lol.they used to have good stuff up untill around 2007ish..then they went downhill...shop ko last year for the first time in years had good stuff that seemed affordable on clearance- we get about 90% of our stuff at garage sales or clearance sales-
K
Not practical for the average dude. That would cost a guy a lot of money to build
You know we built everything in this video over a two year period and spent around $350-$400 at the most but that really isn't that much when you look at how much the descent decorations for sale at the stores cost. The plastic Posing skeletons for example can range anywhere between $30-$100 Plus don't forget you can always find the fee materials online like craigslist ads etc. Hope that helps and thanks for watching. =)
