  • Terrible moment from Mourning Dove Nest Live Stream on May 1st, 2017 - parent dove flees the nest as it is attacked by a crow, which kills at least one of the babies.

    I just never realized that so many birds eat other birds. Eagles, falcons, those sure. But crows? Woodpeckers? I always just thought it was worms, bugs, small fish, corn etc.

      Yeah most animals do it, cannibalizing young ones gives them alot of nutrients and eliminates competition.
      Even when they don't eat them they tend to kill them by instinct

      Crows raid the nests of other bird species all of the time. Eggs and nestlings are easy meals for them.

    Damn !! They were pretty big !! I have a whole new appreciation for adult doves and robins for being alive !! I had no idea so many birds ate other birds young.

    Crows are pretty smart. Whenever they see a camera they know there is probably a nest around where they can drop in for a bite to eat.

      Not really true.
      I have seen doves defending their babies from hawks and lose the battle.
      They know by insticts that they cannot win against predators.
      They try their best but still lose.

    That crow would have eaten mom too if she had bothered to defend them. Crows are quite a bit heavier and carnivores by nature. Food was probably not easy to come by in the area, as that's typically the only time crows will attack the nests of other birds. (What with the fact most mommas wont let their babies go without a potentially injurous fight)

    Probably the sexond chick had died too, because it was (the one at right in the video and) caught and smashed under the crow talons, left in shock and very hurt after the attack...

      That doesn't matter. Even if it was not hurt and could get back to the nest, the crow knows about the other baby and will come back for next meal.

      Seen both mothers and fathers fighting hawk and still lose.
      It's like fighting the guy with the gun and you have fists.
      You be wounded by them and cannot fly anymore and it's best to retreat and see how they take precious things away from you.

      Dove's do build crappy nests but the lack of quality of their nests wouldn't affect predators. The crows will see the mother dove and then investigate.

      Yeah, if the nest was any bigger the baby probably wouldn't have fallen out of it but then the nest would be bigger which mean easier for the predator to spot.

    People only think of crows as scavengers but they will also kill other small animals for food. I watched as a group of crows pecked a vole to death. It was very sad but I didn't intervene.
