“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” C.S. Lewis

I think the paycheck was nice, but I think he saw an opportunity like so many do, to put a bunch of corporate approved social justice talking points into this show, figuring he would spend the next several months laying back and enjoying all of the praise for how progressive he is. On some level he's got to know going into it that pushing the content in a certain direction will all but guarantee a 90 something score on rotten tomatoes just from the activists writing about it
It honestly feels like Smith was in for the check, but Netflix bigwigs were so up his butt about wanting to include these "identity quota points" to look progressive. PR people who weren't aware of the subject creates that dissonant backlash.
Except, this kind of backlash has happened several times even with Netflix involved. Makes you wonder how deep these virtue signalling points are in their butts and they probably enjoy the feeling too.

Late 2019 and into 2020 really has felt like a wonderful revival of the toyline and the announcements (not the end results but the announcements) gave a ton of long-time fans so many good feelings. No matter where you stand on the recent She-Ra shows, that didn't really do much for the toylines and branding as a whole but it felt like we were finally back on the right track. Smith and Ted Biaselli, whose name should also be brought up more in the conversation, (Teds just been quieter, also check out Midnight's Edge's excellent video "He-Man's Last Jedi" for more info) have really done a disservice. To be fair, Kevin Smith is not the only one at fault here. Mattel and Netflix were both directly involved in the production and direction of this show. Smith would not have been allowed to do anything without their approval and this has been stated elsewhere. Smith is pretty much just the face of the project.
Imagine this; if the next license owner were to make another MOTU series: "set up for the plot cut to Teela waking up in her bed all agitated from a nightmare, Orco enters and asks "Teela are you alright" She goes "Yes, yes. Just a nightmare. Adam was dead, he was HeMan and I shaved my head".

Well, by prohibiting something it may be more desired, maybe that was the only non-that-stupid thing in this fiasco. With my previous state in mind, I hope no one buy any toy until this gets fixed, else, I can still remember that at the end of the 80's cartoons, there was at least a human soul that wanted to give a good advice despite doing something for money; and by that they were "richer" and will be remembered as long as I can while I'll forget this crap as soon as I can.
He-Man was created to sell toys. Much like Transformers, GI Joe, and all other 80s cartoons. All of them were created to sell toys. It wasn't until the 90s the laws changed to stop direct marketing.
Isn't the fact that the series is much darker and more mature also bad for toy sales? Like the people who buy toys are mostly kids and I don't think a lot of kids would be allowed to see the Netflix show.
The show was advertised and aimed at the "30-40 year old people who knew the 80s show", so it was kind of expected to be more "mature". As "mature" as the 2002 could be in comparison to the 80s one since it was targeted at teenagers rather than 5-6 year olds.

One has to wonder why Mattel didn't reach out to Seth Green and/or the other Robot Chicken guys instead of Kevin Smith. Just my two cents ... But I think there is a reason why Kevin didn't want to meet with the toy representatives on this toy line. Because they went into this thinking this was a reboot of He-Man. He didn't want to meet with them and have to admit to them it wasn't. It was another woke take on a very masculine TV show. When will they learn that fans are the parents now. To become a truely multigenerational property should be the ultimate goal of any franchise. I will not be getting any he-man toys for my children, nor will i be introducing MOTU to them.
Lucas understood a multi-generational franchise. I saw Star Wars A New Hope when I was in middle school. My children were introduced to Star Wars The Phantom Menace. My son had all of the different space ships as toys and l hung them from his bedroom ceiling when he did not care to play with them when he was older. Both of my son and daughter had Lego Star Wars sets and played Lego Star Wars video games. The Disney Star Wars lost interest for both of them. They were home from college and we had a choice between watching The Last Jedi to The Martian, they picked The Martian, even though we had to hang around over an hour to see it. We spent days talking about that movie. When we did see the Last Jedi, nobody talked about it, and nobody in my family was interested in seeing the next Disney Star Wars movie. I introduced my children to Dr Who when it was restarted, we even watched some of the original Dr Who together. Parents love to share their fond childhood memories with their own children. Well, growing up includes manning up to the mistakes one makes... "Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones." Mattle, Kevin Smith and Netflix can keep this Power Girls of the Universe and shove it where the sun never shines.
They can't. Mattel doesn't own the entertainment rights to MOTU. They sold those off years ago. They are still the owners of the brand, so they maintain control of the toys and other merchandising. I'd be willing to bet damn near anything that the execs at both Netflix and Mattel tear him a new one. Netflix because he basically said live on a stream that they don't really care the fans think, and Mattel because he's definitely hurting their sales.
@@allamericanslacker2378 I'm sure they did. But I'd bet double that Smith didn't give a damn. Probably had his feet kicked up on the table and was like "Blah, blah, blah, I'm Kevin Smith and consequences don't apply to me". But his hubris is going to be the coup de grace in this whole thing. I give it six to eight months of lying low, and he goes on another tangent when former fans want nothing to do with him. At which point he'll make an egregious comparison of his "turmoil" to a real tragic incident then people will want him gone. Or it'll happen sooner when the romance baiting becomes apparent, say after four months, and the LGBT+ community want his skin then he gets the Josh Wheaton treatment and is booted off his own damn show.

Imagine telling adults to grow up because they dislike your cartoon.
Lewis

You guys better watch out when, Kevin Smith, does a "Goldfish Tv" reference in Clerks 3.

"Trans" is used in "transparent", "transform" and "transport". Chances are kids think "trans" is related to those words since "trans" itself is actually Latin for "across, through".
Looked at Mattel Stocks yesterday and it was dropping like a Rock! Closed at 19.12 (-0.31 (-1.60%)) for the weekend. And it’s gotten REALLY bad where unlike sinking Disney Stocks, there is NO ONE on the Analysts’ Boards trying Hype Stocks and spin that it’s a “Perfect Time” to buy now since the stocks are so low. I think (and HOPE) Mattel feels this one. Then HOPEFULLY they’ll Learn their Lesson about Chasing away the ACTUAL Fans whom are the ones who BUYS their Toys! 😤
👏👏😎
I really hope they denounce Kevin Smith.
@@johnfrancismalinao6446 They won’t because they are JUST as inept as Kevin Smith.
What they are going to do is the thing Kevin Smith was SUPPOSED to do and JUST KEEP QUIET! When in reality, what they are supposed to do is what Kevin Smith was doing before the Show Premiered. They should Talk and Hype up the Toy Line and take the EASY out by throwing Kevin Smith under the Bus by blaming everything on him when the backlash starts. This would have worked out for Mattel too because Kevin Smith already ruined his brand on his own. They wouldn’t have much to lose by virtue signaling against Kevin Smith.
Also, fortunately for Mattel, Fans can (and will probably end up) separating the Toy Line from the KSMOTU Series due to the Nostalgia and the Designs being very similar (minus Teela & Andrea) to the Characters they loved. But denouncing Kevin Smith makes too much Sense for Mattel. So most likely, they won’t say anything about it…. 🤷♂️
EDIT: Yup! I looked up Mattel on Twitter and NOTHING about Kevin Smith’s Screw Ups of him chasing away the Fan Base…Of course! 😫
Kevin Smith does not understand this.
I'd say introduce them to the 2002 reboot, it's everything this show promised to be and more.
