When an electric motor stalls, its prone to damage so the controller is probably cutting it out before it hits the stall torque. They should have used a higher stall torque motor. You shouldn't have to trickle feed a 3k+ titan class grinder. Period.
Hmmmm.... how come the P100 never stalls but has a similar motor? It peaks at 1300 w on 220v and this one at 1540 w at 220v. Higher steady state power. Bigger rating altogether. P100 doesn't have the same controller, though, and never stalls.
@@LanceHedrick Power = Torque x RPM, so you can generally avoid hitting the stall torque by reducing RPMs. P100 can go as low as 200 RPM vs the EG1 which seems to only go to 500 RPM; this could be the reason it doesn't stall. To my knowledge, the most expensive single-dose grinder is the original Titus grinder with DRM hybrid burrs (68+68mm conical+flat) with a price tag of approx €6500.
Actually the base Version of this grinder is now at 7000 € afaik. Without customization, shipping and tax. It can easily exceed 10k€ delivered to your door with some customization.
This is going to be one of the few youtube videos I rewatch periodically as I save up for my endgame setup. Amazing work on this, really enjoy the way you spared no details! Looking forward to that unifilter review! (and maybe one day a lelit bianca video one day maybe?)
@@LanceHedrick the more the merrier, I’m a big fan of the long form content. You get to showcase yourself more and your passion for everything in this realm really shines. Thanks again for all the content and hard work, truly!
I found that the EG1 is way less likely to stall once you set to 700rpm plus. It could be the super low rpm that is causing you the occasional issue Lance. I also wouldn't recommend anyone going to "Max" as the internal wipers degrade quickly, there is no reason to go there anyway. I really enjoy this grinder but... I own a V1 & when the oak platen was released I reached out to Weber asking if they would offer a special price for previous owners. They said no. The reason I asked is because the finish on the original metal ring gets rubbed off by the shaker. It leaves a bit of dry taste in the mouth when Weber clearly notice an issue, release an update & offer zero to previous customers, especially at this price point.
As usual love your review. Actually there is a more expensive grinder out there... the Ceado E37Z hero, which I happen to own. If somehow you can get your hands on one. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! do a review and a comparison with the weber. I feel theres still an edge to the Ceado due to the very specific burr set it has but I'm not a professional as you
Another great video, super helpful! Have you had any long term use with a Monolith Flat/MAX? If so, how would you compare whichever burrs you tried in the Monolith to the ULF and Core burrs?
This costs too much to stale. Period. No excuses. I know, I know, the machine is absolutely beautiful, we want to like it. But let's be brutally honest here, there is no reason to be polite with a machine costing that much. Particularly now that there is so much competition out there. And unfortunately it goes with Weber reputation: they put too much products out there without full testing. It goes back to the HG-1, which so many people had issues with. This is the third iteration of the EG-1. Come on. Anybody who is in this to the point of watching Lance Hedrick videos is playing with light roasts, or exclusively brewing light to medium-ish roasts. They should have found this issue during development phase and fixed it before release.
The Ceado E37Z Hero was introduced to the public around 2018. Adjustable RPM, 83mm dlc coated flat burrs, single dose grinder. Approx 5,000 usd. They are one of the first. I'm surprised no one other than whole latte love haven't reviewed them.
The E37Z and hero variant are made to order. I had one. They are gorgeous machines. However , since I’ve owned both and used both the EG-1 is the better grinder in my opinion. Easier to clean, less retention (both are minimal ) but for pour over and espresso the EG1 is better.
Great review. The part where you say "someone will probably comment below the name of this plug", without looking it up but just as someone that worked in an AV rental/production shop where the staff commonly called parts by their technical name we always referred to them as IEC plugs. Outside of that environment in our industry they are colloquially called D plugs/cables. (I'm sure IEC is a naming convention and there are actually other modifiers with numbers and letters for specific variations)
Amazing video thanks Lance. And 253 comments, and you’ve replied to every one of them! Great commitment to your viewers! Re: HU & ULF, exact same geometry, and maybe the coating (or blind?) made the tiny difference. Were the HU closer in flavor to ULF than LU? What’s your preference for high clarity, 1:3 turbos… HU/ULF, LU, or core?
We need a comparison between the EG1 with ULF burrs and the P100 with SSP 98mm HU. Anyone with this budget is looking for this exact comparison for filter brewing.
Lance, this was a great video. Would love to know your thoughts on this vs DF83. Obviously it's nearly a order of magnitude difference in price, but as we talk about "diminishing returns," I'd love to see some blind testing of this vs DF83 vs _____ dialed in for espresso and filter. ALSO Man, what a huge improvement in production quality over the last few months. Well done, sir!
I absolutely love the discussion and comparison of the burr sets. Such a valuable source of information. I will absolutely be watching the upcoming 80mm burrset comparison video!
If you were to only do pour over and needed something for someone who is machanically challenged (ive broken a electric grinder trying to clean it) would this be my end game
If only my kitchen wasn’t so small and my budget was bigger, this would also be my favorite grinder. I love the design of it… Instead I got my Niche Zero standing in a 30 cm niche living up to its name, lol.
Hey Lance, your reviews are wonderful, entertaining and funny! Better than many tv shows. Even if you don’t want to review/don’t like the Monolith Max! 😂
haha! Not that I don't like it! I've not tried it! I just haven't bought it based off a friend suggesting other grinders first who has had a few "end game" ones haha!
Goddamn it Lance, I bought the DF83 on your recommendation and now you release this? I can’t afford this Lance, how will I live? 😂 JK love the content, amazing review, one to dream about
Thanks for review Lance. I would love this grinder but sadly I live in the real world 😢. When are you starting your music channel? 😅 Love your work, keep it up!!
yeah. it certainly isn't for everyone. My hope on covering some of these is moreso to get out in the open, for others to see, what is on these high end grinders. This should help educate the consumer when buying something cheaper and manufacturers on what they need to include. Thanks for watching!
Wow those burrs are thick! Wonderful review, deserved for such an expensive piece of technology. I started my coffee journey back in August by purchasing the Timemore C2 for FP, then I bought Hario Switch and recently Aeropress. Recently I got the upgrade bug so I watched and read so many reviews of better grinders and splurged on the 1Zpresso K-Max, mostly because of your huge breakdowns. The coffee it makes is much less bitter and the drawdown is surprisingly faster on the V60. Thank you for the in-depth reviews!
Awesome review. I think you just convinced me to take the plunge! Dual voltage is a huge benefit for me as I currently live in a 220v country but will likely move back to a 120v country at some point. Your coverage of the burrs is also really helpful.
Blind burrs should be called " the way they f'n should be burrs" to have holes on a cutting surface and expect uniform consistent grind size is madness. There are so many different ways to fasten burrs to their carriers without defacing the cutting edge. Lazy design.
"my favorite grinder" like bro, what home grinder would beat out something that's over 3 grand?? It'd be like someone going "omg I love my Lamborghini so much more than my Honda Civic!!". uhhh yeah?? of course you do. water is wet and grass is green
Have you tried the mizen burrs Lance? I’m curious to find out how they differ from the core because they also can do both filter and espresso. Keep up the good work!
The fact that the EG1 and the KEY both stop with light roast is an issue and they have to work on it especially at the price they ask. Personally I would take the P100 it is lower in price and has a better motor that does not change RPM while grinding
Perhaps you didn't hear me correctly. The motor in the EG1 is actually a higher rated motor than p100. There is a controller holding back the power. The max on the p100 is like 1300, I believe. The max for eg1 is 1540. They just have a massive limiter on it, which is why I spent so much time talking about it. Also, again, I ONLY brew ultra light roast. I never have issues with slow feed and only very rarely with fast feed (maybe 6 times since getting it in April. Cheers
@@LanceHedrick I think the design of EG1 has a shaft which steal some power from the motor. However, leaving numbers aside,I have tried the P100 for over a month and never stoped even once light roast espresso. Which my KEY always do.. i thing it is an issue that needs to be resolved from weber without giving alternative solutions such as slow feeding I have tried slow feeding and I think it is not the solution it has two downside: 1-workflow will be much worse 2- constancy will suffer especially for espresso
I agree it should be resolved. My point is the p100 doesnt have the limiter on it this does. I could be a 100HP motor on the eg1 and it will stall if I put a massive limiter. The power is there. Weber jsut has it locked. I'm hoping the next iteration will unlock more power.
Outstanding review Lance, you truly provide the most comprehensive ones out there. All my grinder purchases so far (ode+ssp, manual grinder) have been due to your videos.
Thanks for this review mate. I’ve had my Onyx EG1 for about 18 months. I have Ultra Burrs installed permanently and use it exclusively for filter. It’s just so good and agreed with everything you’ve mentioned. Mine has stalled twice in that time, I tend to just dump the beans and no feed unless I have the day off and have time to play. I would say the stalling in a no issues for me, I’ve had the same happen with other grinders as well
I'm so thankful for you. I received my EG1 today and took it for a spin. All of my shots were WAY too fast, but if I tightened the grinder up, I heard what sounded like burrs rubbing. I thought my $4,000 grinder had to be defective. But Lance, you saved the day. I learned to go beyond my sound comfort level.....and found where the espresso grind was hiding. Thank you sir.
I prefer this with ULF over any grinder with any burrset currently. But, of course, I haven't used a p100 nearly enough with 98mm HU SSP burrs to confidently say there isn't a chance those could beat this out. What I can say is I can't imagine a quality difference big enough to have me prefer the aesthetic of the p100 over this. I adore the aesthetics here.
Lance, thank you for this wonderful review. I am curious if you've ever tried or would recommend the Ceado E37Z Hero, which is actually more expensive than this Weber. Obviously, cost does not always equal quality, but I am interested in why there is such a dearth of information on the Ceado, especially in comparison to the Weber. Thanks
Do you feel personally that these prices are justified? Not taking anything away from any of the engineering, design or manufacturing. Just a real question.
Thanks for an excellent and very thorough review. I really respect the fact that you took your time testing the different burrs. I really enjoyed it as a fellow EG-1 owner. And please ignore the hateful comments from trolls and other idiots. You seem like a genuine, fun and great human being. Keep up the great work!
What’s the best espresso grinder? I have a Rocket Fausto touch and a Rocket Cincuantotto. I’ve just installed a flow control kit and am single dosing. I’m thinking of selling the Fausto to buy something else. Or should I change the burrs? I’m a home brewer that brews espressos. I’ve been using light roast, but am learning and geeking out. It’s a hobby for me. Thanks in advance.
This thing is a work of art. I would think the experience of using it would be quite rewarding. It seems a bit large in that, at 18 inches in height, it would not fit on many people’s countertops that have cabinets overhead. I wish they made a slightly smaller version; still, wow, this is so nice. By the way, if you play this video at 1.5 playback speed it does mimic if you had been drinking all this coffee…
Correct me if I’m wrong… So you might need to change a burr on a $4k grinder? There are best burr options out there then in a $4k grinder? I truly don’t get it. Any domestic grinder can’t justify a $4k price point.
Hi Lance, for 90% pourover and 10% espresso, would you recommend 804 machined burr or ULF? I want high clarity but also reasonably forgiveness. Thank you and I hope the 80mm burr video will come soon!
Really good video and beatbox 👍 but I rather chew my beans and pour boiling water in my mouth than spending that much on a grinder 😅 It does look nice though, but I'm happy with my Ode Gen 2
Core crushes it, imo. Stock italmills are solid. Dont get me wrong! but the core burrs are next level when it comes to providing tactile and not losing out on nuanced notes.

Lance, love your videos. Just wondering why it appears you have never reviewed a Ceado grinder? More specifically the E37SD? You and everyone else says spend all your money on your grinder and I'm looking for a high-end single dose grinder. I would really like your opinion on the E37SD.
500 RPM as the lowest... but is that the motor RPM or the burr RPM? The manual really isn't clear on that. There's been a small movement of "1 revolution per second (60 RPM) for your burrs is ideal" so it feels like 500 RPM is the motor and there is a gearbox converting that into decent torque at the burr and the burr RPM will be necessarily lower. If so, how much of a step down? If not... what's up with the other adjustable RPM grinders getting down so much lower in their RPMs? edit: lol, of course I ask right as I'm getting to 31:45 in the video (absolutely excellent points!), although still curious about what the reported number means, motor or burr RPM
Hey Lance! Love your videos would like to get your opinion on what you think. Is the best single dose Grinder that allows for espresso up to pour over. Would be mostly using it for espresso, but sometimes to pour over. Oh that’s less than say $2000 😊
Lance, my name is also Lance. I would like to know your opinion over the Weber Worked Shoppe Chi grinder. I’d like to look in the build quality of the web of products in the Chi grinder. Fits my budget better what do you think?
The REAL question: Do you have some kind of experience and/or training in musical theater? I know a thing or two about singing - my son's an opera singer - and you sing like somebody who's done it enough to know what he's about.
5:00 never do this while it is powered on. You could have said good bye to those fingers. On the other hand, been enjoying my EG1 (Silver) for over 7 months and it has been superb. Actually the base Version of this grinder is now at 7000 € afaik. Without customization, shipping and tax. It can easily exceed 10k€ delivered to your door with some customization.
Crap. Unreal.
I love you!
*to my p64 across the room* "I love you, too!"
This is going to be one of the few youtube videos I rewatch periodically as I save up for my endgame setup. Amazing work on this, really enjoy the way you spared no details!
Looking forward to that unifilter review! (and maybe one day a lelit bianca video one day maybe?)
I literally filmed the bianca video today! Took me only 6 months hahaha
@@LanceHedrick WOOHOO! giving the people (me) what they want LOL. Looking forward to it!
I'm excited about it. Tried to make it only 20min, but I fear I went... way over that
@@LanceHedrick the more the merrier, I’m a big fan of the long form content.
The sound when grinding is horrible and you can hear its struggling to keep the rpm. Low torgue and a high price..
What's crazy is the motor is MORE than adequate. The issue is the controller they have on it. I'm hopeful they'll ease up on it soon.
I'm selling a kidney tomorrow.
lmk if no buyer's. I could use another.
@@obsessedcloset2638 Interesting. Ill have to look into it further.
Me: is in the market for a $500-800 grinder
Me: I better watch all 40 minutes
I love you 😄
did you do any comparisons to the Lagom P64? and what would be the closest burr equivalent for the P64 for the perfect filter coffee?
Since it uses the same 64 mm burrs as the Fellow Ode, I would suggest taking a look into SSP Multipurpose or even the Brew / Unimodal V1
If you want ULF equivalent, SSP Brew/MP v1 is where its at. Can't do espresso, though! And thanks for watching until the end!
ALSO
Man, what a huge improvement in production quality over the last few months. Well done, sir!
I absolutely love the discussion and comparison of the burr sets. Such a valuable source of information. I will absolutely be watching the upcoming 80mm burrset comparison video!
heck yeah! Thanks for watching!
Ek43 vs this monster. Im happy with my c40. But of course i look at lambos. ;) ☮️ the opus would be my price range.
If you were to only do pour over and needed something for someone who is machanically challenged (ive broken a electric grinder trying to clean it) would this be my end game
on EG-1, what dial setting do you keep for pour-over with ULF and espresso?
I love you back ❤!
Why is the onyx so much pricer than the already expensive silver version?
Not gonna buy the grinder but I love these upbeat videos :)
Thank you! Seriously means so much you'd watch it even without intention of buying. Thank you for the support!
Goddamn it Lance, I bought the DF83 on your recommendation and now you release this? I can’t afford this Lance, how will I live? 😂 JK love the content, amazing review, one to dream about
the DF83 is such a good bang for your buck! This is no where near the same cost-value ratio! haha thanks!
Thanks for watching!
can you comment on the avg retention level? and did you need to RDT?
Wow those burrs are thick! Wonderful review, deserved for such an expensive piece of technology.
I started my coffee journey back in August by purchasing the Timemore C2 for FP, then I bought Hario Switch and recently Aeropress. Recently I got the upgrade bug so I watched and read so many reviews of better grinders and splurged on the 1Zpresso K-Max, mostly because of your huge breakdowns. The coffee it makes is much less bitter and the drawdown is surprisingly faster on the V60.
Thank you for the in-depth reviews!
Heck yeah!Stoked you're enjoying the K Max. Such a solid grinder! Will serve you well for years.
… I’m here for robot Hedrick
I'm here always. You just have to close your eyes and wish. And robot Hedrick appears.
"my favorite grinder"
like bro, what home grinder would beat out something that's over 3 grand?? It'd be like someone going "omg I love my Lamborghini so much more than my Honda Civic!!". uhhh yeah?? of course you do. water is wet and grass is green
You seem very unhappy
Love your videos lance, any chance of a DF64P review? I've seen others but id rather see it on the lance hedrick show
coming up!!! I have a plan for a "budget 64mm grinder showdown" on the horizon! Probably couple of weeks out.
Every so often you break into song or in this case beatbox and I can tell you've got a serious musical talent on you.
thank you, Luke! I did do a good bit of musical things growing up hahaa
@@LanceHedrick as a professional musician myself there does seem to be a correlation between music and coffee obsession 🤌
Have you tried the mizen burrs Lance? I’m curious to find out how they differ from the core because they also can do both filter and espresso. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the super informative review. Also entertaining as well, very well done Lance.
thank you so much! Really appreciate it
Your reviews are always highly anticipated, thank you for the amazing content!
I love you back 😂
thank you! Stoked you enjoy
I Love You too Baby 😍
Over 3000 GBP for a grinder that can bog down, I honestly don't know how people justify buying such a product unless they are made of money.
Sending some love right back at you!
Indeed looks like a telescope, check out the Ceado E37z Hero, that one is even more expensive
I plumb forgot about caedo! unreal price tags
Which my KEY always do.. i thing it is an issue that needs to be resolved from weber without giving alternative solutions such as slow feeding
I have tried slow feeding and I think it is not the solution it has two downside: 1-workflow will be much worse 2- constancy will suffer especially for espresso
I agree it should be resolved. My point is the p100 doesnt have the limiter on it this does. I could be a 100HP motor on the eg1 and it will stall if I put a massive limiter. The power is there. Weber jsut has it locked. I'm hoping the next iteration will unlock more power.
Keep up the great work Lance!
It's been enjoyable watching your content quality get better and better as time progresses.
Outstanding review Lance, you truly provide the most comprehensive ones out there. All my grinder purchases so far (ode+ssp, manual grinder) have been due to your videos.
Is it better then monolith Flat MAX
Thanks for this review mate. I’ve had my Onyx EG1 for about 18 months. I have Ultra Burrs installed permanently and use it exclusively for filter. It’s just so good and agreed with everything you’ve mentioned. Mine has stalled twice in that time, I tend to just dump the beans and no feed unless I have the day off and have time to play. I would say the stalling in a no issues for me, I’ve had the same happen with other grinders as well
4K stall….
Love you too!
Amazing video, Lance. How would you pit it against the larger burrs, like EK43S with stock burrs or a P100?
Check out the caption!
Oh shoot lol!!! I usually do 🤣
hahaha! You're good!
Any suggestions for best burr design for decaf filter?
By the way, if you play this video at 1.5 playback speed it does mimic if you had been drinking all this coffee…
hmmm... what a waste of engineering and matrasil - such a zombie grinder for ...filtered coffee.... brrrrr... viva la espressolution!
Correct me if I’m wrong… So you might need to change a burr on a $4k grinder? There are best burr options out there then in a $4k grinder?
I truly don’t get it. Any domestic grinder can’t justify a $4k price point.
You don't have to. Normally the people looking in this range are nerds and want to change it up
BB LANCE - BUDDY - please turn off the grinder before you put your fingies up and all in there. please you are scaring me omgosh.
I really hate to see you stick your fingers in there when it's powered up. It's "probably fine", but shit happens. Unplug it!
Hi Lance, for 90% pourover and 10% espresso, would you recommend 804 machined burr or ULF? I want high clarity but also reasonably forgiveness. Thank you and I hope the 80mm burr video will come soon!
Really good video and beatbox 👍 but I rather chew my beans and pour boiling water in my mouth than spending that much on a grinder 😅
It does look nice though, but I'm happy with my Ode Gen 2
So whats the difference in the cup against the DF83? Lets say stock weber burrs against stock itamills in the DF?
Woud be really interesting. Maybe Lance is waiting for more 83 mm burrs to arrive (Gorilla Gear, SSP Lab Sweet Style) for a full comparison.
Core crushes it, imo. Stock italmills are solid. Dont get me wrong! but the core burrs are next level when it comes to providing tactile and not losing out on nuanced notes.
@@LanceHedrick Thanks for the reply buddy. So we need to get 83mm Weber Key Burrs 🤪
ha! someone needs to just steal the geometry and make them 83mm lol
@@LanceHedrick or build an adapter for the 80mm🤔
Hay Lance. I am a recent college graduate from The University of Denver. I received my BA in English Literature and Philosophy. I have done research projects concerning coffee. what is a good place to start a coffee career?
Lance, I love and admire your work and what it contributes to the World of Coffee! Thank you so much. As always: what a great pleasure to watch a video of yours! I learn so much while at the same time enjoy your great Humor and very profund Knowledge.
thx for the review , I put lot of time to compare between p100/01/eg-1 ,at the end I choose eg-1 because of this video.
I just got my EG-1 last week. OMG, it's amazing ! I'm just seasoning the burrs now. Dark roast 20 kg - 25kg should do it !
I wonder how many people have ever been stuck on a desert island with a choice of coffee grinder burr sets.
I've gotten to a point where I setup my bean cellars in advance to 17g dose and just clock 30s for very consistent espresso.
