This was my favorite 2600 game. I spent hours trying to figure out how to get into those secret doors! If I had one complaint about the game it's that I wish they had used a solid image for the back of the Zots rather than showing their face from the front and back. I realize that it was probably a memory saving trick, but it really spoiled the illusion when a Zot came around a corner and you couldn't tell if it was facing toward you or away from you until it started to get larger or smaller. Everything else was done so well, that just stood out as an obvious omission.
Great review! This game is really technically impressive! I'd like to start buying games for my 2600 again-games for the SNES and Genesis are pretty outrageously expensive on eBay right now, but 2600 games are still low-priced and very affordable.
Currently 67/261. In a video I was watching about the Starpath Supercharger, someone put it down in comparison to Escape from the Mindmaster. I don't think he's reviewed those games yet.
Man, I used to play this game constantly! There was at least one insta-death level (5, 7, or 9 - can't exactly remember) where you'd warp in and the blue Zot would be cruising up the hallway right at you. The only way around this was to skip that level entirely by going up two levels on the previous maze. I had one play session where I got up into the 40's level wise (I think - it's been a while). It was crazy fast and the walls were invisible both in the game and on the map (again, I think that's how it was - I'm trying to remember this from about 35 years in the past). Great game. Possibly my favorite 2600 game of all.
Yes this was the first 3D/Doom style game ever. As a little kid I tore this thing up I got to the end level(s)?? There is a level you get to and the game freezes or resets, it has no true ending.
There is a glitch in this game. Hold the button and start pushing the controller in any direction. You can warp to some random levels at any point in the game.
I love this game! I pretend that I am Logan and the Zots are Sandmen. I think said that in the review. Speaking of Logan's Run, I just got it from Amazon.
Omg that game freaked me out soooo much as a kid. I can still hear the music in my head. Such a creepy game. Loved it.
Think: num, num, num.

+David Halligan Thanks! And yes, this is a great time to collect 2600 (and 7800) games. You can even get a lot of sealed games for $10-$20 apiece.

Nice story! I didn't get that far, lol.

@@jackburton6330 Since you can jump 2, maybe you can skip that one?
I find it interesting that the Atari was able to pull off fast-pased first-person gameplay 10 years before Wolfenstein 3D.
Extra RAM did it?
I missed this one back in the day, but it will not elude me for much longer. I shall get a copy of the mazer!
This game scared us so much when we were kids.
I could imagine so.
Yes, as the Zot sounds got louder and more growly, it would cause quite a fright.
I loved playing this game. The intro music sounds a lot like the organ/bassline for Riders on the Storm by The Doors

Very impressive looking game! It just shows there was much more you could do with an Atari.
Tunnel Runner had extra RAM built into the cartridge, which is what makes the first person perspective possible.
I wasn’t expecting the Nom nom nom ending 👍

This and Beamrider are my all-time fav Atari 2600 games.

Looks a lot like 3D monster maze, very cool.
I think there was another....
Escape from the Mindmaster.
I always thought this game was like 3d pac-man, and a horror game combined.
The story of Tunnel Runner could easily be translated to a horror movie. Great game, though!
What, like Maze Runner?
Oh boy.....ChainChomps great grandfather
Nom nom nom nom!
Great review for a fun game!
This game may seem lame now but it gave a five-year-old nightmares back in 1983
when i get to the level that does not show the maze except where i have been, im totally lost and game over for me
i so want tunnel runner..
Forgot about this game!!!
