In "All Pick" where supports pick first, I'll probably just pick my best support hero.

Actually, the thing is that good support heroes depends on meta core heroes and meta teamcomp. Especially on legend-ancient braket people don't like to choose cores with reliable disable even in 5man-fight picks.
If pos 4 is lingering his pick it's essentially comes to bunch of choices that have ALL potential meta traits. In different patches that really varies, like networth dependancy, disables (especially AoE), push potential, low CD spells for continous fights, strong lining and saves. Only bunch of heroes have all needed trates and pos 5 practically have to learn those heroes because of 1st pick nesessity.
This tips are really good for hight skill bracket but before that pick phase isn't that sinergistic even between core and support at same line!

I think void spirit is the best postion 4 hero with low cd and burst magical damage. In mid to late you can jump backline and solo kill opponent teams supports 💪🏻, and can push lanes very fast and force rotation

never really thought of WD as someone who secures lane for weak carrys, esp since people just seem to skip heal nowadays. thanks for the explaination

I think that besides the heal, the main advantage with WD is that he can protect the carry against ganks and severely punish tower-dives with Cask and Maledict. Any damage the enemy takes while overextending is amplified heavily by maledict.

Keep in mind that Cask is also incredible if your carry is a hero that needs to be dove/ganked like Spec, AM, TB. Those are not heroes that you can poke and disengage from; you need to all out commit to those kills. When that happens Cask can get insane value as it bounces between 2-3 heroes for NINE seconds of stun at max rank. Even at rank 1 or 2 those bounces can buy time for friendly TPs. Death Ward also can prompt an interrupt which reduces CC on your cores.
