This is a very fun plant. I remember my childhood days in Vietnam playing with these. I'm so happy to learn recently that they are in abundance here and are good and beautiful for ground cover. I will be planting them soon at the end of March in Florida
In the lingua of Uganda called Luganda, Mimosa Pudica has an interesting name "muko wewumbe". This literally means "My in-law fold up". This amazing plant is known to be highly medicinal. From asthma, bed wetting, nervous problems, blood circulation, epilepsy, menstrual disorders and snake bites. That is the in-law for you!
The secret in closing or collapsing is the Turgor cells inside a cell...Turgor cells are large vacoules inside the plant. So when it is touch, the vacoules move.
Thanks for the clear explanation on the plant movement. We just ordered the TickleMe Plant greenhouse on line and the Tickleme Plant book which I will used with my students as it shows 20 activities you can do with this plant. I am not a fan of the fire scene as kids might try this and cause a fire or harm the plant.
