Behavioral scientists: “cats probably don’t remember you when you leave”

Do behavioural scientists really think that? My cat meows when one of us leaves until she manages to summon us back. But a lot of animals get separation anxiety, it’s pretty well known, I don’t think animal scientists are suggesting cats forget about people when they’re not there.

@@moonxshakti I agree animal intelligence is underestimated, but animal behavioural scientists are the ones behind the buttons right? Billi’s part of an experiment on cat behaviour.
It’s a bit of a strawman to say behavioural scientists are denying this obvious thing.
@@smudgerat9624 some do. Some have decided that animals are simple minded. I find it hard to believe how a person could not perceive their intelligence, but I do think it is deeper than we realize.
@@smudgerat9624 No, I agree with you, it's a strawman or an overexaggeration. I have never heard of an actual animal behaviorist saying cats can't REMEMBER things, lol. Opinions on animal intelligence -- or what even constitutes 'inteligence' at all -- vary, but animals being able to remember stuff is very much not in dispute. Science and research is cool, guys!

To be fair, a cat understanding the mail is probably like a human understanding particle physics. You need to be smart to begin with, and also have years of experience and training. Its incredible though how the cat realized that her owner said mail was too hard for her to understand.
Inspired by Billie, I finally taught my cat to use the buttons. And I'm working from home. She expresses her wishes very strong (can't answered yet), has a "mad" button, but as soon as something is not according to her wishes, she starts with "ouch"

Hey, my Kahli hides things in my bed and she remembers it’s there and goes back to fetch it when she wants to play.
Perhaps the supposed lack of object permanence is more like "I don't see it AND I don't care, therefore it doesn't exist/I don't feel like complying with the experiment"

Cats have object permanence for sure, if they care about the object. I have a game with my cat where I throw the snack and he runs and catches it. Once snack fell behind the desk, I took it later, but my cat didn't see that and he still searched for that snack 2 days later
@@spooniesarah This is a HUGE problem with animal intelligence/cognition tests in general. We expect animals to react in a certain way and if they don't, we assume they don't understand or are unintelligent.
The famous 'mirror test' (putting a mark on the animal and seeing if they try to rub it off when they see themselves in a mirror), for instance, has run into this issue. How do we know if the animal can't tell that the mirror image is themselves, or if the animal simply doesn't CARE about it? For example, most elephants won't pass the mirror test, but how many elephants actually care enough about some mark on their body that they'd try to rub it off?
Basically, when looking at animal intelligence, it's important to consider that not all animals behave like people, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's because they're too 'dumb'' to.

My Sassycat loves fresh catnip. In winter (a long UP winter), she gets dried. It is such a disappointing substitute.

You should place different hedgehogs into different places but not so your cat ever sees more than one at the same time. Mess with its head royally, thinking hedgehogs can teleport

Billie is determined to correct the idea that only dogs use their buttons to make sentences. She seems to be using more words to express herself now. I am so sorry that the new Bunny did not live up to expectations. Maybe she will make friends with it slowly.

Maybe if @dx watches ALL the button videos on youtube… As i apparently have… a different conclusion can be drawn. My dog ABSOLUTELY presses buttons knowing their meaning. (At least knowing what HIS meaning for them is. I’m the one who has to learn) They are not random presses. With or without buttons… If you don’t think dogs try to teach us their language, you have simply never had a dog as intelligent as my dog. It obviously bothers him that his humans are so slow to understand natural canine communication. I have watched him try desperately to teach me his word for “water” and “food” and “outside”. What is the difference in his own language and a button? Dogs have been ringing bells to be let outside for decades.

Billi didn’t need the mad button to convey her sense of betrayal by being presented with an imposter bunny. She’s hysterical. I agree that if the new bunny has some elective surgery to remove the squeaky and have a pouch inserted for catnip Billi would be more receptive. This is not only not her bunny, but it makes weird high pitched noises? That has to put it over the edge for her.
Seems like dad needs to get on Billi's schedule! 🤣

To explain mail, I would have suggested "A box will come to the house." Being a cat, I have to think "boxes" is the main thing she notices about the mail.
Or just have a mail button and casually tap it any time you bring in any mail.
Then they can sort it - “mail Dad, mail Mom, mail home, mail Billie.”
"Outside" or "bye" or something similar maybe to work with the buttons they have now.
My cat knows the mailman. She used to growl at him. But she's finally realized that he brings her presents from grandma.
Billi doesn't know those words. Gotta use the words she know.

@@janeeyre1990 well, she clearly understands more words than she has buttons for, so it's difficult to say. But I figure "box" and "house" are both things of great importance to a cat, so that increases the chances she'll have picked up those words.

Since watching Billi I’ve been more precise and consistent with what I say to my cat. I’ve always thought cats just understand your tone and a few words but they seem to know a lot more than they’re commonly given credit for
Animals are way smarter than we give them credit for. People who think otherwise are just closed minded. I mean, just look at who created all the animals! God is good all the time ☺️☺️☺️

We had a cat that actually vocalized "rural" for squirrel, when a chipmunk came up to a screen near her. She "said" it twice in a row. I was amazed!

Those chirping toys are highly annoying. Thankfully, my cat hates the noise & was much happier with the toy after I removed the chirper. Now it's one of his favorites. Hope you can get the chirper out of Bunny so Billi can fully love it.
My cats are ok with them but they love bells or anything jingly.
@@juliebraden6911 I have one cat who loves crinkle stuff. He used to destroy packing paper and a cardboard box as his play place, more or less. When we went to get new kitty toys, I saw some crinkly ones and gambled on a guess and he loved it. His favorite was a specific bird with a chirper, and he tears them up too quickly for his own good. He loves string and feathers too, mostly cause I like to play with him with those when I can. Tease him by tickling his nose or feet with the feathers of it or what have you, he honestly loves it, the little booger.

I bought my cat one of the “zoom zooms” and she was VERY skeptical, and I was so disappointed, but within 10 minutes she was chasing that wand like nothing else. Now, when it turns off she gives me the “mad face.”

I don’t know which of her interactions is my favorite. Now we’re giving cats the ability to communicate their frustrations verbally we’re never going to hear the end of it.
I can imagine the reactions of the behavioral scientists. I mean, aside from the science they must be enjoying all this, they can’t all be serious robots.
Imagine one day if cats and dogs can leave online reviews or the humans explaining on their behalf.

She expected and wanted her old bunny back. The shape and “name” of this one don’t register; they mean nothing to her. She doesn’t understand why her familiar bunny disappeared and isn’t coming back.

i remember in the 90s, when i would send a coupon from teh back of my cereal box in order to receive some special prize in the mail, i had to wait SIX TO EIGHT WEEKS for delievery! it was a treat to finally have it arrive in the mail. i wonder if Billi feels the same way!
