- Saint Pierre, a town on the French West Indian Island of Martinique, is home to the volcano Mount Pelée. While over a century ago, the land nearby was considered a playground, in May 1902, the volcano suddenly erupted, and the town below with over 30,000 people was obliterated within minutes. With only one sole survivor, the eruption of Mount Pelée is one of the worst in history.
