I play Div1 more than Div2 but have since drifted away from the franchise in favor or tactical shooters/milsims (like Ready or Not and GR Breakpoint). Division is still my favorite IP but it needs to either be revived or just die.

    I think they all make the same mistake. Instead of sticking to a main game and developing it intelligently forward by storytelling and interesting content, they all get greedy and do more spinoffs in the idea to always win more players on different platforms. Interestingly they never pay off and they forget the loyal player base, that just plays the game. I remember Wing Commander (yes I am quite old) that had a continuous storyline over several parts with some DLC and later on even some spin offs. But the main focus was always on the original story over several years. I think Ubisoft and Massive would fare way better if they sticked to the Division story from 1 to 2 to now 3. All the spin offs could just disappear. But they are not courageous enough and in the end ruled by spreadsheets and executives that are not gamers.

    Good take.
    I feel like every game I play(ed) has gone through this terrible period of bad management and content drought. All the Overwatch PVE drama, I started playing New World until that suddenly went from a million players to nowhere, the Division 2 feels in the same boat and Sea Of Thieves was also a live service for years where the only additions where tiny monthly events like 'sit on 15 chairs in the world'. But in the end all these games got back on track and I am sure same will happen for the Division 2. They just need to make content like they did in year 1 and WONY. Those years were a blast

  • @kineticstar
    @kineticstar 28 дней назад +10

    Bungie and Destiny are now in the same boat Massive and the Division.
    Both Massive and Bungie are taking strays from all the new ip development that are taking away from their tent pole games.
    When you siphon off dedicated workforce and income to the detriment of your revenue generating ip you're going to run into issues if you base revolt or leave.
    That is the hubris of both of these studios. In short it comes down to management.
    You need to balance development and dedicated support; only to go all in once you have a plan and force to support your game and you built the base structure of your ip so it can quickly be built and tested.
    Well thats how its done in other programming industries.

    • @RogueGold
      @RogueGold  28 дней назад +2

      Very solid analysis- I'd say the one big difference that led to these circumstances is the decision structure behind each studio. At least until recently, Bungie had autonomy in what they worked on and where their resources went. I can't say for certain that Massive didn't, but I think under the publisher structure there had to at least have been a degree of control from Ubisoft in deciding when Massive would invest/pull back from Division, and what new IP's they might work on

    First and foremost...Warframe already proves that the "curse" of live services is merely a myth. It doesn't exist, and is centered entirely around games that don't grow, don't evolve, don't change enough, and don't expand outward and just constantly stay the same. I gave up on Destiny years ago, but that game suffers the same issues as Anthem, and Marvel's Avengers, and Suicide Squad, and even Outriders which isn't a live service but is in a similar genre. I'm reluctant to include Division in there, but I will, because the same problems exist...little to no evolution, little to no expansion and change outward into new territory to truly make a world players can get lost in.
    You're absolutely right to call out the similarities between Division and Destiny in terms of cancelling and/or delaying spin off games as a problem or source of concern. I remain hopeful and optimistic that Division still has time to rally and make a comeback, after all, the thing Destiny needs most is time away from the public eye, changing direction and maybe coming back with a new approach. Division kind of already had that before it resumed releasing season content. However, I don't entirely agree that Division has a consistent vision and knows what it needs to be to truly rise from the ashes. That's one of Destiny's biggest problems...10 years and it still has an identity crisis, and the worst part, is that the major heavyweight creatives behind Destiny, the game's best hope to keep the long lasting vision consistent, are mostly (if not all) gone from Bungie.
    Julian coming back will hopefully right the ship, but Division really needs to be more focused. If that involves major shakeups to the game's story presentation, even moving potentially away from being a formal looter shooter, so be it. I'd rather see Division succeed as a franchise by shedding its biggest trappings than stick too closely to certain tropes and hold itself back.

    • @RogueGold
      @RogueGold  28 дней назад +2

      Great thoughts- thanks for laying them out! No doubt Warframe has defied the odds and continued to be a major success, the only main reason I didn't bring it up here is the difference in format and pricing model it has compared to Destiny and Division (which are identical save for D2's later-on switch to F2P)

    • @RedShadowOfSaturn
      @RedShadowOfSaturn 28 дней назад +1

      @@RogueGold It's funny, Destiny may have changed to "free to play," but a lot of people (even fans of it and its playerbase) still consider it monetized worse. Whereas Division 1 and 2 still cost money to play, yet I'd consider both far better values than Destiny.
      But yeah, I'm hoping Division can pick itself back up. With big enough moves and development focus, it can.

    The Division series has something to it but in TD1 I loved the way you can explore in the subways and further on the streets and buildings. As for TD2 its lacking some things in that aspect. I hope they do add more to the game. As for the future of TD hope to see them focus on the TD3. Hopefully not split the team to other projects. I loved Destiny 1. Destiny 2 vaulting content is what really moved me away from the series. The Division 1 was fun and it was so massive. The streets, buildings, subways were fun to explore. Add the weather effects like in TD2 that be something to add on to. TD2 was missing some good things from TD1. I still play TD2 just wish TD1 had a current gen version. Linking the two would be a good thing as well what happened between the first TD and the Second linking the events. There is more they can do to bring more story and lore to the series. If they do get TD3 going I hope it can help answers some of the missing things in the past.

Meanwhile, destiny just concluded its light and darkness saga and with these layoffs happening after a major success, the future seems dark for it. I play both destiny and the division, and I'm really hyped more for the division's future than i am for destiny, even though i play destiny more often than the division

    Unfortunately, at this point, i have no confidence in Resurgance, the DLC, or Div3 ever happening. I love this game and have around 1200 hours into it. In the time I've been playing, the DZ has become unplayable for the average player. There have been no major changes to the gameplay. Arguments could be made for Project Resolve, but let's be honest. That has only introduced more bugs. No good gear introduced. Abysmal exotics post Elmos. And every piece of new content has been delayed repeatedly or outright canceled. Say what you will, but we are, in fact, in a content drought. As the commander of my clan, I've seen numerous agents go idle for well over 45 days at a clip. That is a clear indication of the state of the game. I'll keep playing because i love it, but my confidence is shaken, and i understand why people are leaving.

    The real reason they're doing this is to diversify their investments. They think if they have three products out there that they sink less money into there's a higher chance of one of them succeeding. It's called hedging your bets. The issue is that if none of these games receive the funding and support they need to meet player expectations all of them are going to fail, and fail hard.

    I recently just started playing division 2 as my first time ever in this franchise last week, and im sure i would not be playing if it was single player only. The fact that it is online feels like it gives me more reason to grind, hop on, and play to level up, etc. I find i can not commit to single-player games as once you have finished the story, the game is over and gets deleted it just feels like a waste of time for me even if the story was good. Would be ashamed to see them pull the online multiplayer part of this game out just to turn it into another battle royal.

    The problem with Division +Destiny 2 is that
    1 the companies are incredibly greedy
    2 the fans let it slide and the practices continue
    Warframe and Genshin succeed because theyre arent wholly greedy and improve their games rather than stagnating with the same core activities, lack of QoL and care about playerfeedback

    It’s crazy to me how many of these online games I’ve been playing for years are all dying slowly, while Warframe is the only one to get stronger over time. Not only that, it’s starting to grow again lol I think the difference is the Devs actually engaging with their community consistently.
    I had to let Destiny go. After the last 2 major expansions, I became so disappointed at what the game had become. I used to love it so much. I still play Division from time to time, but really just to roam around and goof off, though I keep up with lore. I still think it’s super fun, just not enough to be a hobby game.
    Went back to Warframe and, man, There’s still so much for me to do even years later. The only money I ever spent was on color palettes. Other than that, it’s all free, even the mini battle pass.

    The devs need to move forward with seasonal characters and seasonal wipes.
    The DZ brackets need to be reverted. DZ brackets did nothing but empty out DZs. I have yet to get into a full DZ since SHD DZ brackets were implemented. In SHD 1,001+ is usually 1-2 agents at a checkpoint just 1v1'ing other than that DZs are just straight up empty most of the time. I can't help other players farm, extract or gather materials.
    With DZ bracket and seasonal characters in question, I am not too optimistic about the game's future at all. As much as the community complained about seasonal wipes, player count is lower than what it was before they announced the possible cancellation of seasonal characters. The players who didn't want seasonal characters got what they wanted, but player count still is dropping.
    The mixing pot of DZ levels in DZs is what made them feel dynamic and interesting, now DZs are dead as all hell and again, once you max out your build, DZ bracket 1,001+ is pretty pointless to go into.
    The Division 2 is by far one of my favorite games, but I can barley bring myself to even play through the seasonal missions with the direction and changes they are making to the game. The devs are going backwards with the game trying to people please instead of doing what's best for the game's health.

    The whole appeal of something like Destiny and The Division is the looter shooter aspect. Going out, hitting some PVE activities, optimising your gear and the using that in a PVP environment.
    At least for me and everyone I played with. PVE was fun, but it's not what kept us coming back every day. And there's been no game that I've spent more time in than The Division.

    For me personally, most of the truly great games that I love - Deus Ex HR & the Dishonored series to name a few - are no more. They didn't sell well when they launched, or not enough, and there's no sign that they will have a continuation or conclusion as they are not considered 'high impact titles'. According to an ex-dev, the first store mount from WoW, a sparkle pony, sold for more money than StarCraft 2 WoL. Why spend years creating a game when you can make more money with 1 store item? And even one of my friends, who knows better, in a drunken stupor bought a 70$? Bunny skin with that new Descendant game. 70$ (I think) for one freaking booty skin. A grown *ss man. And plenty of people bought it too.
    As much as I revile and dislike these corporations, in the end they just follow the money. That's my impression at least.

    The management at bungie is bad and its a shame bc FS delivered as it should have. Im actually a destiny main and division is my second big time game. FS was on point. But whather it was an executive level at bungie or Sony,they just tried to squeeze too much out. They really did overachieve. Nobody(or nobody i know anyway) was asking for destiny mobile. Some ppl werent even asking for 3....but if the ship goes down,hey they kept me entertained for 10 years. Not many games do that

      Also,for most of destiny's life span the only real compeythey had was...... Division. Now it's different. First descendant,helldiver's,
      word is Riot may be making an mmo. There's more viable options now and that may play a part in bungies risk taking.

    Loved the video. I love the division 2 it’s my favorite game of all time have put over 1000 hours into this game. I wa skeptical from the division 1 when I saw all the downgrades and fell in love and never looked back. I think spin offs are a great idea on paper and concept. It’s a shame to see heartland go as it was so far in development, but I truly believe spin offs of division would ultimately fail and cost Ubisoft more money. I think that as a dedicated division player I am looking forward to anything they announce, but like the main game division 3 is what I’m excited for over any other spin off. DLC is amazing and I am excited for that I think what this game does great is there isn’t a bad barrier to entry or content that has been sunset like a destiny 2. There’s just so much about this franchise that has surprises me that is still strong because it was left with a skeleton crew and no content and yet still is doing well enough to warrant over five years of content. I think ultimately division 3 will not be as successful and will make money but live service games get such a bad wrap. Division 2 was an upgrade certainly over the first game where destiny 2 wasn’t yet it got lost in the haze for a bit. Say what you want about Ubisoft, but massive entertainment has great team and they make amazing games.

    TD2’s dev letter about the last TU 3+ years ago will hurt TD franchise overall. The delay of the DLC will hurt it more. The thing with Destiny, and its my most played franchise to date, through thick and thin and all the challenges in the last 10 or so years, they kept trying to make things right ( many wrongs too). They didn’t quit on the franchise….. heck even now.
    You don’t sell games on hope. Hope the community stays after a 3 year break. Hope after all the terrible patches and poor support. Hope people forget you canned an anticipated TD franchise in Heartland. TD is in a sad state and that makes me frustrated and doubtful of its future despite my love for the franchise.
    Perhaps look at another great example similar to Destiny and community. Warframe has been around even more than Destiny and its community has kept it going for all this time. yeah not for everyone but the example of what it is to nurture your franchise and community, not destroy it in silence.

They could truly do so much more with things for pvp players to do like DZ missions exc. Better way with dz missions to earn exotic components. • @MemoriesLP
      @MemoriesLP 28 дней назад

      It would not work.
      The reason why there is enemy variety in divusion is because of the RPG mechanics.
      An enemy places a turret that shots you. You hurt the HP of the turret, the enemy goes there to fix the turret. He would die most of the time and would never be able to fix it.
      The black/white tusk wifi enemy goes to his tank fix it too. He would die by one shot.
      The game would be completely different. When you ask to remove RPG from Division, you are asking the devs to change the design of most enemies. This other division game would probably be good too, but would be very different. I wonder how many enemy types they could make in this other game

    Yea I think these spinoffs should be supplementary and used to funnel people into the mainline game. I think they could benefit from what Call of Duty does I housing all the modes and content inside of one ecosystem. You can access WARZONE, DMZ, 6v6, campaigns and various other modes inside of one hub. I hope they figure it out but Herman Hulst and HT are committed to Destiny so that's comforting for now.

    It really says everything that he stays on while Luke Smith is out like what the F...
    But that's the gaming industry in a nutshell for you, and the major subject so many "journalists" never touch - that the CEOs and shareholders are 99% of the time the ones at fault.
    I mean hell, look at all the massive successes SQEX has had in the last year or so (ignoring all the closed Gacha games for a moment) and yet they are always falling short of expectations bla bla bla.

    Hey my guy what do you think about the new dz that the devs have added to the game? I'm talking about level 40 - 500 shade cap, if you boost a character and don't get your watch. You play dz or conflict and you'll be facing people who haven't reached 1000 shade. It's an interesting idea to avoid all the trash players in the dz or people who don't know about it.

Div 2 is not much different than D2 in that sense, even despite a much better new player onboarding experience. I do think the fact the Div 2 game has had only Brooklyn dlc in the time that D2 had 5 or more is why Division ip will be around for time to come.

    I would like to say that maybe I'm wrong, but the problem is not the market of the games themselves as a service or something similar that concerns Bungie, but that they lied to Sony about selling themselves and that they inflated their prospectus and earnings projections which are actually unsustainable and now Sony, like Sony, is doing reconstruction of the studio itself, but the main problem of Bungie was the management itself, which was really incompetent and the chain of bad decisions that led it to this stage. I want to say that Desitny is not in the same dimension of existence as Division2, that is, the game is light years better than anything the division can currently offer and that is the main problem of the division because ubisoft can't make good pve content and the pve content that the division has is incredibly thin. My opinion is that Destiny is in a transition phase and things will more or less be the same until sony takes full control of the game itself while the division has been in a very bad position for years.

    Bungie "leaders" destroyed the studio by spreading their resources to wide and thin, instead of focusing on the excelent D2, and maybe reworking the game to stop content vulting, and even bring back deleted content.
    If they had found a way to make D2 welcoming to new players, while still releasing excelent new content, the studio would be a success for many years to come.
    Even though The Division doesn't have the same "player count" potential, if Ubishit doesn't fuck things up, the franchise can make them A LOT of money in years to come.

What if by selecting a seasonal character took you to a specific server that let us play in other locations??? Yaniak had spoken about server space and how they can’t expand stash space yet they were going to add a 5th character. How does that work? Was the complaining really that much or as usual are 100s% of the online whiners only 5% of the player base. The devs should have stuck to their guns and rolled it out.
