I don't know if people still want episodic storytelling anymore with streaming shows. That is going to be a huge weakness to this series if they continue with that format. Long story arc format payoff is way better for streaming shows. (This part is where a poll is needed if people prefer long story arc or episodic story format.) There are whole season type story arc(a whole season has to be about one whole story arc) or use arc based off of length the story requirement(ex. shonen jump anime one arc can be 3 episodes or one arc can be like 53 episodes or some can be 100s.) which means the arc doesn't end with a season finale but when the story tells them to. Pretty much they have to ask themselves how do I make a story arc that last the amount of episode I am given without needing filler to fill it with. Depending on the amount of episodes, the pacing of a story has to change. 3/6/8/10/13/20/22/24 episode count all have to pace a certain way. (I image each episode is 40 to 60 min long and using the long story arc format) But they don't have to worry about doing 25, 30, 50, 65, 70, 75 episode per a season? I didn't mind the two storm troopers at the beginning. That's really the only comedic part of the episode. It's cool to be reminded that storm troopers are regular people just doing a job. I think it was a mistake to kill IG-11. It would have added to season 2 having him tag along with Mando and baby Yoda. There's a lot of character development between those two that they could have explored in future episodes. Esposito was fantastic. I don't care if he's playing "Space Gus" - that's what I want from him in Star Wars. My main complaint is how suddenly they wrapped this episode up. TIE Fighter crashes and they immediately start saying their farewells and show is over.. those last moments felt rushed and clunky. Overall pretty good first season, I hope they make longer episodes or tighten up the story in season 2. I have faith season 2 can be great.
Yeah don't understand his gripes. The humor fit the scene perfectly. And how did it make the Empire less threatening by having people behave realistically? Swear some people take things way too seriously. Didn't diminish anything one of the better episodes of tv I've seen in a while
For me, the scene went on for too long. It really undercut the tension built up in the previous episode. I understood it was there to soften the death of Mr. I have spoken but I would of liked a tighter scene.
@@lurkingposter Yea I can agree with that. The scene did feel about 20 seconds too long. IG-11 should have killed one of the troopers just as he raised his hand up to punch baby Yoda.. that would have been a little better..
@@TikkiEXX I agree and thought it was a great excuse to burn time while IG-11 caught up to them. As far as the whole empire not being a threat based on 2 troopers is crazy and there was even a scene where Mando made a joke to an ex-empire soldier's assumed shooting skill and the guy immediately snapped back that he wasn't a stormtrooper, further emphasizing their minion role as we have always known them...AND do the higher level ones not seem like a threat (like the ones in black)? Or maybe their massive numbers and tech? sheesh that was a lame reason. As far as being mad they hit the baby...they did, it wasn't cool, but I noticed they never actually showed the baby getting hit...only the bag it was in.
Baby Yoda seems to take a moment to reason before harnessing the force. He seems to be able to use the force when he's relatively calm and able to think about it. When the mudhorn was attacking Mandalorian he was being relatively ignored. When he force choked Cara Dune he took moment to look over the situation before acting. Even when he pushed back the flames he was with people he liked and not really in direct attack distress. So when he's distressed it's almost like he can't act. That's my logic anyway.
People kill me with inconsistent tone arguments. Even horror films have comedy, actions have romance, fantasy has realism. You want shxt to be serious every second?!?
It’s still a delicate balance nonetheless. It did take me a little bit more of awhile for that joke to grow on me than most of them. It says just a little bit about how it affected the tone. It’s also not that essential to the story.
I loved The Mandalorian but there can be some small improvements for season 2. I'm definitely invested in the show. Season 1 did a good job introducing Mando and Yoddle.
I think Filoni is learning to transition from CGI cartoon action directing to live action directing There a few episodes that feel it work better as a cartoon. This is good. The more he learns, the better he be suited for when they give him a live action movie to direct.
In reference to the storm troopers, I was a cop. Sometimes I was awesome. Sometimes I didn't have a fucking clue. We also had State Patrol and when they showed up, us regular cops even got nervous. Then we had S.W.A.T. for when really cray shit happened. We had divers, sharp shooters, etc. Not only that, in stressful situations, even cops with great aim couldn't shoot for shit! Some are fat and old as fuck. And then there's a difference of accuracy with a rifle that you just don't get with a handgun. Basically, what I'm saying is that those two stormtroopers were just shitty beat cops.
I personally like that fact that this show is a little less serious. As someone who has never been interested in the starwars universe, mostly because it's so intimidating, it's such a large universe that people take so seriously. This show is a easier way for people who didn't grow up with it to be introduced to the material. I've actually been considering watching the movies because of this show.
That redshirt dude can go on an away mission with Captain Kirk. The reason the Empire is feared is because 1. Star Destroyers and 2. Numbers of disposable troops. They miss all the time but enough of them act like a musket firing line, their misses are cooperative.
not to mention a seemingly endless array of tech and weapons of all sizes and ability. btw, love the example! lmao... I just remembered those dudes never make it back to the ship
@@Oakbeast im just as big of a SW nerd as him, and that opening scene not only fit, but it was needed. When do we get to see two schmoes having a normal human conversation?
I don't agree that the middle episodes were filler. Through them we see that the Mandalorian has been isolated by his decision to save baby Yoda. Episode 4: He tries to lay low but finds out that's not an option. Bounty hunters will keep coming for him. He can't hide. Episode 5: He tries to do a simple job but that backfires on him. He get's betrayed because his associate learns of the bounty on baby Yoda. He can't trust. Episode 6: He turns to untrustworthy associates from his past out of desperation and that end's up turning on him as well. He even tells baby Yoda at the end that he knew it was a bad idea. He has no safe way out. All of this makes it believable that he would go for the offer in episode 7. It's an obvious trap, but making it work out somehow is his only chance to get his life back. It's even implied in episode 6 that he has been trying to avoid this path, we see he already received the offer when the droid goes through the ships computer but he had not gone for it... until now. Because now he has to accept that he can't get away from dealing with this head on.
@@jesusriced I don't tell you what to do. How could you possibly get that conclusion from my comment? Maybe the childish entitlement I was refering to. btw real life is full of people who will tell you what to do. Bosses, spouses, etc. be prepared ;)
I am okay with his helmet being removed... I knew it was coming because we do have an a-list actor, who despite Disney being more than capable of shelling out for, eventually will want to use his likeness. I was surprised that they did not reveal it sooner, perhaps from a first-person perspective where the audience sees his face but other characters do not, and that carries on for the rest of the show. However, I personally was hoping for IG 11 to carry his secret identity, as a bonding element that they would both share as they grew together as friends, IG-11 learning to understand humanity "DATA-style", and Din slowly losing his prejudice against droids... I am *_not_* okay with the fact that we, the audience, saw his face, seeing as how IG-11 was destroyed it should have been a mystery that would have brought an even greater emotional shock knowing that it died with it, and we'll never know what it saw. But the level of expendable droids in the show is _too damn high!_
@ oh yeah sorry I meant to correct that. He's not like say, _The Denzel,_ but off the top of my head I'd say he's now a highly exposed television actor because of some well-known roles.
I agree! They made up this weird helmet rule for this show but haven't really justified it, I don't think. To keep it Western they could have made it like a cowboy hat where it gets knocked off sometimes but he always dusts it off and puts it back on once he's done kicking ass. Makes me think Pedro just wasn't actually there most of the time.
Some starwars fans can never be happy, for years everyone know the Storm Troopers are the Puddys of starwars but god forbid anyone calls them out on it.
25:45 I like it. They could have done it better, but finally showing his face is showing the progression in his arc in loosing some of the dogma of his old mando ways. But I'm guessing Pedro and the show had other reasons for it too lol.
If you don’t want the force in Star Wars then don’t watch it. They just introduced the dark Saber. I’m hoping Mando becomes the second mandalorian Jedi.
Mando will eventually get it and use it, then give it to baby Yoda! Thank God 🙏 Kathleen Kennedy isn't near this show or else Mando would be cucked and give the saber to a women from one ep with no build up. That saber is for baby Yoda!
guys its a series, youre complaining about the middle episodes and the show being SERIALIZED. Like Favreau said, its a western thats exactly what it is. If the show was designed to be five one-hour long episodes, where it all was just one story with no side missions or depth it, then it would be. MY FAVORITE thing they said was "Write better dialogue" at one point they said it was "terrible"...COME ON NOW, and "Stay away from the fan service", seconds later talking about loving BABY YODA, but they wanna stay away from fan service....lol. Guys Star Wars is still for kids, and we're getting the best more mature SW content we've ever gotten. Yes, including the dialogue, that opening scene was great.
@@DoubleToasted_ episode 5 was the sht to me. It was one of the episodes where Mando played it smart and stayed a step ahead. Many of his other decisions in other episodes were like 'uh...why would you do that and not simply....'
I saw the troopers trash shooting scene as an explanation to why they can't ever hit sh**...apparently the empire doesn't give their soldier adequate equipment.
Star Wars the past few months: Painful burnings, decapitations, child abuse, choking, maiming and explosions... Freddie Prinze Jr.: "Star Wars is for kids..."
I absolutely loved this show. Season 2 needs to be 12 episodes to expand the dialogue. It would be cool if he comes across Lando Calrissian played by Donald Golover (age him up a little bit) or even Luke Skywalker played by Sebastian Stan. Maybe he could hand Baby Yoda off to Luke? I will patiently wait and see what comes next.
🤣🤣🤣 SPACE GUS comes out, Mando with the Popeye Chicken Sandwich, Troopers scout around the parameter, yeap, another Popeye customer vs employee scene fighting for the chicken sandwich 🤣
Man the length of the episodes was one of my favorite parts. I don't watch entertainment for a living and there is a fuck ton of it these days. It's nice to have an easily digestible show. I also disagree about character consistency. The whole point of the show is he starts to find his humanity in baby Yoda. The old Mando would have likely killed those mercenaries instead of imprisoning them. Third, stuff like "womp rat" is flavor, not fan service. This is a different world and that's gotta be communicated in some way. Y'all are just nitpicking because everyone wants to be down on Star Wars right now.
They did explain why he didn’t kill the others in episode 6. They locked him up as opposed to killing him & said “this is what you deserve” for betraying us when we were a team, he locked them back up in retaliation. Mando even said “they got what they deserved” when explaining why he & the prisoner were back without them. Mando kills if you try to kill him, period. He’s been VERY consistent with that throughout the series. Also as he learns to be a father figure to the baby he’s rethinking the way he operates.
I'm outraged that they suckered punched him like that. He's a cute Yoda baby. You don't punch baby Yoda or baby Groot like that! That hurt my soul foreal though.
I agree 100% about the timing of the stormtrooper scene. Though I loved it and would like to see more just like it, it shouldn't follow right after the death of a major character. Yes I know this is how soldiers really interact. But imagine the reverse. You start telling a joke about 2 soldiers, then bring up some dark, grim, depressing thing they went through, and then deliver the punchline. C'mon now. As realistic and representative as that 'thing' was for them don't forget the purpose of your narrative. You telling a joke or a dramatic story? And if you must mix the two make sure the timing is right!
@@DFTNSHEXGRM seemed like dude was actually put off by the fact he wasn't scared of the empire based of 2 bottom level stormtroopers shooting accuracy. It's 8 episodes of the FIRST season! Of course the show is trying to figuring itself out. That's the same for the office, agents of shield, and countless new shows. What are you talking about?
I enjoy it. It is spaghetti western Star Wars. It also feel like it has influence of Lone Wolf and Cub and Dollars Trilogy(Clint Eastwood films) and even Seven Samurai(especially that one episode). When they did Rise of the Skywalker, what was their reference and what is their inspiration outside of Star Wars too? This is one of reason that separate the two when it comes to why the reception so different. This series still have not solve Star War's long story arc storytelling(most of the series is episodic) and did not solve when Star War's dive into their Jedi or their more fantasy mythology. Episodic nature of this series remind me of the Star War Clone Wars cartoon series. I feel like they always understood when Star Wars is grounded but what happen when it is not. Star Wars need a whole tv series deals just about the Jedi part of Star Wars just to see if they really understand that part. I don't think this series should go that deep into the that side but they just need another series just about the Force.
No that scene between IG and Mando has been set up since the 1st 5 minutes of the show. Mando doesn’t trust droids because of the clone wars. One tried to kill him then later on one saved his life.
I don't think you can get around not having the force in some way. It's the core thing of star wars. That's what made it special. If not it's more like star trek. Just normal everyday people in space. The show doesn't have to be all about the force but it needs to have some connection to it.
You have to look at it from a revisionist history perspective with the empire. All records of the Jedi have been destroyed or hidden, with the only info left being either folk tales or the rare few that survived "Order 66". The empire (Palpatine) wasn't playing.
Just one of the things you have to overlook I guess. Happened in the force awakens too I think. Rey and I believe Finn weren’t sure of the Jedi Really? They’ve been around for a 1000 years and were just wiped out 30 years before TFA How were they not sure the Jedi existed.
When an man punch an pregnant woman: Stop! That's bad! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> When a Stormtrooper punches Baby Yoda: NOOOOOOOOO!!! GOD DAMN YOU😱😡😡😡😤😤😤🤬🤬🤬
The point of the "Seven Samurai" episode was to show Din and Baby Yoda bonding. They were in that village for over a month living a quiet life as father and son. That episode is meant to cement their connection for the overall story. It also shows why he trusts Cara so much.
What's the overall feeling you have for season 1 of The Mandalorian? And do you want more Taika back for season 2? The Rise Of Taika!

I honestly think its one of my favorite Star Wars moments since the original trilogy.
Baby Yoda getting punched by a stormtrooper reminds me of "the campaign" when Will Ferrell punches the baby and the dog. lol
Jon Favreau should take over Lucasfilm. He understands and respects Star Wars more than Kathleen Kennedy, JJ Abrams, and Rian Johnson combined.
Hold your horses LoL
Rian respects Star Wars the same as George Lucas. Here's the new story. You don't like that Han shot second too bad.
Fuck rian Johnson
That's a little excessive...just give him creative control over the movies and TV shows and keep Kathleen Kennedy for all the financial stuff
@@ETTMedia3700 rian Johnson does not respect star wars and I stand what I said
In reference to the storm troopers, I was a cop.
Aside from some issues with plot conveniences this episode, I overall enjoyed episode 8 the most. That darksaber reveal was hype AF.
Feels like TV writing from Jon Favreau
I personally like that fact that this show is a little less serious. As someone who has never been interested in the starwars universe, mostly because it's so intimidating, it's such a large universe that people take so seriously. This show is a easier way for people who didn't grow up with it to be introduced to the material. I've actually been considering watching the movies because of this show.
The threat of the empire is the numbers of troopers not the individual trooper
Even though like 3 of them were competent searching for the droids in A New Hope, and even killed Luke’s family
*Stormtrooper punches baby Yoda* "Its treason then!"
when they took the helmet off I was like... nah put it back on...
There was something really underwhelming about it. I can't put my finger on it...
I was surprised how ordinary he looked
Same. What’s funny is if IG was going to take the helmet off then just do it off screen.
Think that would have worked better.
Double Toasted That’s the problem with us always knowing the cast for everything way ahead of time

People like different things ! I'm not crazy either about the Mandalorian ! Why is this a problem ?
I haven’t heard anyone say that they didn’t like the humor of this episode. Is this one of those Trumpish “people say”?
"People" are so spoiled, entitled and jaded these days. Just be grateful that this show even exists in these depressing times.

@@jesusriced ok. I dont get it but why not.
@@KnightofGascogne "just be grateful" Thats literally a command. But I agree with you lol

I'm going to miss Uncle IG.
Some starwars fans can never be happy, for years everyone know the Storm Troopers are the Puddys of starwars but god forbid anyone calls them out on it.
I thought the scene with the trooper's was fantastic. It added great humor, anger, and necessary death for punching baby Yoda!! Lol
25:45
I like it.
@ be quiet. Real fans 💪 are talking!
guys its a series, youre complaining about the middle episodes and the show being SERIALIZED.
8:57 I disagree. We were just as upset with Kuill's death as we were with Baby Yoda abuse.
I really enjoyed the season overall! It kind of dipped in the middle, but picked back up with that Prison episode. Can't wait for season 2!
Yeah, episodes 4-5 were kind of weak overall but the rest of the season was fairly strong, at least for a Star Wars property it was.
@@DoubleToasted_ Agreed!

Expect to see more in the future ;)
I absolutely loved this show. Season 2 needs to be 12 episodes to expand the dialogue. It would be cool if he comes across Lando Calrissian played by Donald Golover (age him up a little bit) or even Luke Skywalker played by Sebastian Stan. Maybe he could hand Baby Yoda off to Luke? I will patiently wait and see what comes next.
that hand that punched baby yoda was broken in 3 pieces and they got off easy...if i was there ...sheesh..
When they took off his mask I felt weird
Maybe in the baby's mind he sees himself as the protector of his new daddy.
When mando clan leader started hammering those stormtroopers best scene in whole episode for me

Baby Yoda is adorable. He is basically a green version of Gizmo from Gremlins.
38:15 DAMN! Bro invoked "The Holiday Special"!!! Now he's diggin' in the crates!

I'm outraged that they suckered punched him like that. He's a cute Yoda baby. You don't punch baby Yoda or baby Groot like that! That hurt my soul foreal though.
It's not that he never took it off. He never took it off in front of people. I'm sure had had plenty of time to shave.

I think the troopers must have accidentally killed Kuiill. I think they were probably aiming to stop him and then, whoops.
MAndalorian feels more true to the sense of adventure that Lucas kept trying to capture from those old radio serials than the last two movies
I’m not going to lie, I laughed my ass off when Baby Yoda got punched 😂

i think less people didnt like that first scene than you think. Everyone i listen and talk to, loved it
Yeah normally when he says some people its usually just him but so he doesn't get flack he makes it seem like more people are on his side.
Even the worst part of the episode is 100X better than any of the current movies.

What Cory didn't know was that the Mandalorian has a mirror under that helmet.😂😂
Baby Yoda getting abused got me outta my seat.😠😠
Lone Wolf and Cub is a clear influence ...
I don't think you can get around not having the force in some way. It's the core thing of star wars. That's what made it special. If not it's more like star trek. Just normal everyday people in space. The show doesn't have to be all about the force but it needs to have some connection to it.
My impression was the Storm Troopers didn't so much miss as Baby Yoda redirected the shots.
The Jedi have been around for thousands of years, so I'm surprised that Mondo had never heard of them.....
Rey and I believe Finn weren’t sure of the Jedi
Really? They’ve been around for a 1000 years and were just wiped out 30 years before TFA
