  • "Sheer Elegance: Surviving Strands of Ancient Maya Weaving" (v42418) documents the connections between classic Maya images of translucent textiles and what is produced today by Q'eqchi' Maya weavers of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, and Tzotzil Maya weavers of Venustiano Carranza, Chiapas, Mexico. This unique documentary project, produced by the nonprofit Endangered Threads Documentaries, highlights analysis by Anthropologist Christina Halperin, PhD, of the University of Montreal, of murals, painted pottery and carved stone from Classic Maya images (250 - 900 CE); discusses textiles in museums and private collections; and introduces numerous back-strap weavers of the style today. Narration is in English with Spanish translation running on the screen.
