I have a Vanguard in 30-06 and a 1500 in 6.5 CM. Found an add on knob at Desh Ind.
Here in Namibia you buy a rifle and then have to apply for a licence. Once that is approved (about 1 month of waiting) you can go fetch the rifle from the store. So... there I am. All I own is a Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk. 2 and I am dreaming of of long-range and PRS. I decide on 6.5 Creedmoor as the caliber I want. My dad and I are in arguments daily about how the Creedmoor is just a marketing gimmick and all that. 4 Months ago there is a sale on Howa 1500 Barreled actions at a local gun store. I find this channel and what I see about Howa's impresses me. I decide to take the plunge. A month later, I have my Howa 1500 Barreled action (26" Heavy Barrel) in 6.5 Creedmoor dropped into a Boyd's At-One stock. I bed the action and put pillars in the stock as well. I do some load development and I take my dad shooting a few weekends back. At the time I had a 6x fixed zoom hunting scope and this rifle but I start shooting steel at 600m and with every trigger pull, there's a hit. I let my dad shoot. Same story. The next day he buys THE EXACT SAME RIFLE in 6.5 Creedmoor. So, Steven/Stephen, your videos resulted in the sale of 2 Howa 1500's in a small African country. I hope you are happy now.
Great to hear!
You guys are very lucky. (South Africa) they have just extended our waiting time on licenses to 160 working days... congrats on your rifle
Yep and someone in Australia is going to buy one as well.
You most likely have your rifle by now but from the amount of information I have seen and read about the 6.5CM it is an excellent round for PRS & long range shooting it shoots flatter than the .308 and maintains supersonic speeds for longer ranges so I hope you have chosen the Howa in the UK there is a 14 week wait for the police to do their background checks and then they visit you to make sure you have a gun safe etc. before you get your FAC and can then go and buy a rifle but as soon asmy FAC is approve I will be buying a Howa APC in 6.5CM
6.5 Creedmoor is no gimmick. Very little recoil, accurate as hell, hits like a sledgehammer

Stephen - I bought my Howa 1500 largely based on your reviews and I have never regretted it. The Legacy warranty is "sub MOA out of the box with match ammo" and it has lived up to that name. Mine is the 6.5 CM. Beyond the 20 break-in rounds, I have a total of 181 rounds downrange while searching for a factory round it prefers. The average of those rounds is 1.2 MOA and includes some economy rounds. Settled in on Hornady American Gunner (140 grain) and the average of those rounds is 0.9 MOA for 96 shots. All with a box-stock rifle and factory ammo. I'm a big fan of the HOWA 1500.
308. with 147gr. Training cheap ammo makes sub MoA down the range. I can confirm that.
I watched this video a year ago. After this one i decided to buy a Howa 1500 as my first rifle. I bought the 308 and i am sooo happy with it. The way it is built is just bomb proof. Thank you for this video!!
Glad to hear it!
I have a Howa Rifle in .308 your review of the rifle in a disassembled condition was welcomed. Excellent detailed explanation of the features; I now have a much better appreciation and knowledge of this firearm. Thanks.
Thanks for watching David
dude!!!!!! that was an absolute amazing review. Amazing.
Thank you
Great stuff I just got a 1500 and it's bad ass and now iv learned a few more Valuable things I did not know from you Thank you Chris
Thank you for watching
Thank you so much for the detailed review. I was on the fence between Bergara and Howa and your video gave me the information I needed to choose Howa. Thank you again. Take care. -Phil
No problem
In good old days, like mauser M96, M98, US springfield M1903, Those bolt and bolt handle are all in one piece forged structures. Of course , it is not easy for machining. However, lots of companies started to make bolt and bolt handle in two pieces then welded ,soldering or screw together to save the COST.
true
One error I made. The bolt is forged one piece the receiver is machined.
Love the HOWA’s. I’ve got a number of them and I’ve done quite a bit with them on my channel (2 Clicks Up), which is worth a look. Their out-of-the-box accuracy and their reliability at the price point they are has made them hugely popular for years here in Australia. I use them for hunting, and they have not let me down. In fact, I’ve just bought a used HOWA 270 at a good price, which is a little project rifle. Good vid, by the way. Keep ‘em coming.
Over at Impact Shooting RUclips channel Piet recommended this rifle to start PRS. Just waiting for mine to show up at my local FFL. Really looking forward to taking it out to the range. Have also ordered an Oryx chassis for it as well. Am very pleased to see this video on the Howa 1500.
Thank you for watching. Its got great build quality
I purchased a Smith & Wesson 1500 Deluxe in .270 Win. back in the early 80s. They were fitted with Howa barrels. Beautiful gun. It will shoot 1 inch groups or less @ 100 yards all day long with reloads.
Excellent, informative video…worthy of a download as a new 1500 owner.
Glad it was helpful!
... good video, i whole heartedly agreed, Howa makes a solid, reliable rifle. I own two. If weatherby uses their action for their vanguard rifles, you know they are extremely good quality. I'm a hunter (whitetails in S Texas and mule deer in Colorado) and all that attention to detail translates to accuracy and in turn to clean kills...
Agreed. Thank you for watching
Howa vs Tikka?
@@sheldonjplanktonn sorry, I don't own a Tika... so honestly cannot compare
Got a safe full of HOWA’s. Love ‘em. Never ever let me down, and they’re dead simple to work on.
Agreed!
I have two they both shoot 3/4 to 1/2 inch consistently. They are great rifles. Feature rich for the money
Good solid dependable
We in SA enjoy this program alot. Presently it's difficult to get your license for you gun. The gunowners are not responsible for the crime. But on a better note. So nice to learn more about Howa. Thank you.
Your videos and knowledge about the product is the reason why we buy this specific gun range. Ower sales consultants are not so knowledgeable about the Howa 1500 range of rifles. Keep the good work up.
I have a Howa 1500 in .243 Winchester and love it. Super accurate coyote and deer rifle
Great informative video …thank you 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
I bought a Howa 1500 H7 chassis rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor a year ago, up to that time I had a Savage 12FV in the same caliber. Thought about upgrading the stock on the Savage at $500 but thought I would look around. I had a Howa 555 in 243 back in the day, absolute tack driver so I though I'd look at them again. Glad I did, got mine for $200 over the price of just the stock for the Savage. The 12FV was a very accurate rifle posting 1/3rd moa 5 shot groups if I did my part but that Howa with the same blueprinted handloads dropped my group size another .040" or so everything being equal. I have shot a best 5 round group sub-1/2 moa (1.360") at 330 yards with Hornady ELDm 140gr bullets. What's not to love ?
Excellent presentation. Well done.
Thank you kindly!
Thanks for the review.
My pleasure!
I was skeptical buying a used Howa 1500 from my local shop, but the day I got it out to the range... I don't understand why anyone would trade this firearm in! My Howa 1500 in 22-250 is my go-to varmint rifle more than my AR platform rifles now. Sub moa out to 400 with Nosler Varmageddon tipped flat bottom bullets in handloads are a dream to shoot with this. Even the what appeared at first to be a crappy scope, the Nikko Stirling, that came with it, performs great and holds true. Best $400 I've ever spent on a rifle.
Agreed
Several years ago I found a Howa 1500 in 243 at my local Cabela's on the used rack for under 300 US it came with a Scope . Best 300 bucks I ever spent on a rifle.
Just built a Howa 1500 in 6mm Creedmoor. Brownells had the barreled actions on sale for $250 and I couldn’t pass it up. I love the thing. I will say I’m not the biggest fan of the HACT trigger’s feel when comparing it to my CZ which has a beautiful single set trigger (at a slightly higher price point). But when I compare it to my remington there’s no contest. I will definitely be building more Howa’s in the future and maybe try out the timney replacement trigger.
@ Michael - I did a spring kit replacement with a kit rated for 2.0 lbs. Turned out to be 1 lbs and the sear would not hold with a 12" safety check. Be sure to do the drop test if you get down that low. (my kit was from www.gunbloke.com. )
My pops has a 6mm creed and the whole time of Rona that was the only round I ever saw in stock in stores
I love my HCR. Only thing I would change would be the bolt knob, I’d like a larger one for precision shooting.
Send the bolt assembly to Short Action Customs. They have done two for me. The fit is flawless and the larger bolt knob looks like it grew there. Their machine work is impeccable .
If you haven't already found out there are 2 piece add ons that you can get if you weren't wanting to send it out
Thank you for the video 👍
No problem 👍
Seeing this today 8/12/23. The only issue I have with Hows Rifles. That I can't get more of them. So many options and choices. My 223 is one accurate rifle. It's to bad that Howa rifles doesn't receive the recognition it deserves.
Thanks for the review! I'm currently building a 6.5 Grendel in an MDT LSS Gen II chassis and a 6CM in a XLR Element 3.0 chassis. Love the Howas.
Thank you for watching
I agree with the assessment of Howa rifles. I bought a barreled action on a whim, for $270, and after once I got a stock and scope I tested it out. It’s not picky with ammo for one, and it’s made with quality. Affordable and quality made. I want to say they follow the CIP chambering? SAAMI is a North American/US chamber spec, so I wouldn’t be surprised if HOWA’s are CIP. CIP supposed has a longer throat and so it isn’t as ammo picky and doesn’t follow the principle of chasing the lands and get close with minimal bullet jump.
I want to do a Howage build in probably a 6mm ARC. We’ll see. I enjoy the content. Wouldn’t mind seeing you stretch the legs on a rifle at distance.
Thank you,
Isaac
Awesome
If you’re building an ARC get the mini action
Love my howa walnut stock howa 1500 308 win 🏆 good price and quality
Great video! I was looking to build a 6mm ARC bolt gun. I think I will go with the Howa barreled action and a KRG Bravo stock. I'm always looking for value.
Thanks
Great video! How much does the barreled action weigh?
I've been researching cheap quality rifles for a while, and was sold on the ruger American, with more research I have found the howa 1500 is around $300 cheaper than ruger, in Australia. I already have my first 3 different calibre howas picked out. But I would still like my 223 to be a little ruger ranch
Nice
I got 3 of them and they are all very accurate, much better value than the Tikka and Remington also
Agreed Rob
I love my 1500 lightning 6.5 creed. I got it with the hard plastic hogue stock for $320 a couple years ago. Haven’t seen them that cheap since.
Thats a good deal
What ammo it shoots the best and how big is the group with that ammo?
@@caesar5555 Honestly, everything shoots well. The round I chose to hunt with is the Winchester Deer Season XP Ammunition 6.5 Creedmoor 125 Grain.
@@derekkt49 define well.... .9 moa is not well at all. My well begins from .5 moa
@@caesar5555 Mine is an off the rack Howa 1500 lightning so I'll take .9 MOA
I love my 1500, it’s just a really great value, you get a lot of bang for your buck.
Best value out there in its class
The Howa 1500 action is basically a Japanese version of the Sako L61 and L579 action with a bit of Weatherby Mark V thrown into the bolt sleeve and a bit of Remington 700 thrown into the top receiver section for the scope base.
Yup
The HACT trigger is an excellent trigger for the price point on these rifles the same quality drop in trigger units cost an arm and a leg and some don't even compare on quality
@@lawrencemcginley9937 I can confirm that, the trigger is so smooth on 308. Recoil on 20" heavy barrel is in my opinion is pretty low due to overall weight which is pretty important on a Long Range.
I've seen you do a lot of reviews of the Howa 1500 - thanks! It would be interesting if Howa would make a "Model 1500+" or, maybe a "1600" that is higher quality with tighter tolerances, etc. It would be more accurate and would surely sell (people pay $1,300 for a Defiance Action in the Remington 700 footprint - and that's the Action only). Maybe if you reached out to Howa and asked, they might consider it... 😶
I don't have much pull but I can try.
awesome review, I love my howas just for the reasons you mentioned.
Thank you
Very informative. Thank you.
Have you shot new Howa Oryx .223? How is the barrel? It is described as heavy barrel.
Not the 223 but I have the 6mm it is a heavy barrel
Very informative. How does the bluing on the 1500 hold up to moisture or should it be cerakoted?
Its better than the remingtons bluing but if you hunt in wet condition often cerakote or stainless is better which they do offer now
I am thinking about this rifle in 308 or the Howa 1500 Varmint GRS Berserk stock. Both really nice. The problem here in Europe is the price of 6.5 creedmore is more than twice the price of 308. Nice reviews of this gun. I need to make a decision now.
Just get a 308 unless you plan on shooting beyond 800 yards on a regular basis
I can confirm that what Bullets4Bucks said. I just went 2 days ago to try used Howa 1500 Kryptek with Niko Stirling 16x44 scope. I have got it for 900euros as they are around 1500e new. That rifle with heavy barrel and good marksman shoots at 100 and 150 meters sub MoA. The bullets went in the same hole after 20 min. of shooting. Even if you go for used one try it out on a range and buy it. You wont regret it. Cheers
@@Bullets4Bucks I would say with better scope 800 yards and you could bang that metal plate all day long 😁
Retro props for the AND1 t-shirt
Great video! Thank you
Thank you for watching Chris
@@Bullets4Bucks I do believe I’m going with the Howa over the Remington 700 after watching this and several other videos.
@@chriscrisafulli798 i would
Hi, I bought a weatherby vanguard chamber in 243 win about 10 years ago and was very happy with it.
I find out howa was made in the same factory and what do you know I am buying a howa 1500 mini action stainless varmint chamber in 223 rem.
I just love the way they are build. And thet are very affordable for the quality.
Very nice!
Great video just what I needed to convince myself this is my next gun .
You said you have shot thousands of rounds just wondering what is the lifespan of these guns and when does it start to affect accuracy
Depends on which caliber, method of use and maintenance. I have yet to have one wear out on me though or go bad.
@@Bullets4Bucks How about 308. are those Howa 1500 good regarding lifespan?
@@The_Touring_Jedi yes very good
I believe that this action is in my Weatherby Vanguard.
It is made by Howa
I have a Howa 1500 with the old glory chassis and i love it. Its is a real tack driver even at 1000 yrds it holds up every time.
Awesome! Glad its shooting good
I just got one myself, I haven't got to shoot it. The feel alone is amazing and worth every penny.
@@Trigger11 great to hear
I have the same opinion. Never had an issue with howa and have one made in the 90s.
Never have issues with howa
Just got my 1st Howa1500 in .223 just waiting to get it on the range with some 55g fmj
Nothing wrong with Tikka's bedding system. Pair the Tikka with a steel lug, and it's solid. I'd like to see real-world examples of Tikka's recoil lug system causing accuracy problems.
I like Howa rifles, but Tikka is a cut above the rest. Tikka's tolerances are tight enough you can put a prefit on it. In fact, Tikka basically has a bunch of prefits already made that they simply pull from the shelf and put on during assembly. Howa does not have that capability.
I've worked for a few manufacturers and have seen this in person. I agree though, Howa is an excellent rifle.
Just from what I see the 1500 is better action that the Remington 700. Over my lifetime my family always bought Remington 700. Most were tack drivers but as time went on quality control sucked. Their varmint special rifles were less accurate than there standard barrel rifles, How's may be a game changer for me
Agreed
My two gripes against Howa, the firing pin hole in the bolt is too f@#$$%% big and I wish they would come from Howa with 24" barrel options for non magnum chamberings. Neither one is a deal breaker and I think they are like you said a superb value and almost bomb proof.
These features are mostly only seen on high end rifles and action. Howa's gotta be the best design and quality for a bolt action design for sure.
Agreed
Just tried one out 2 days ago used rifle Kryptek model 308.I can confirm it is very precise and for the money you get a great rifle that can compete with famous names on the market. Sub MoA at 100 and 150meters.
I might have missed it in the review, can someone remind me if it's a 3 or 4 lug bolt, approx what degree bolt throw?? Thanks. Helps with scope clearance etc. Great review. This is the type of detailed assessment mfg need to have. Obviously resulting in sales. Well done sir.
2 lug bolt with 90 degree throw
2 lug
Awesome rifles.
Yes they are
I bought a couple Rem700s and not one of them were as accurate as my Howa 1500 and it was almost 1000 euro cheaper there's such a good accurate rifle out of the box
I believe it
Is this the same receiver for all their model? I have the Howa 1500 hogue basic model heavy barrel. if this receiver is the same then am gonna put in a wood stock just to make it even better but if not I’ll just leave it as is as my budget gun
They have a mini short and long but yes essentially
Man after watching this, seems one good thing after another!! I’m bout ready to say screw the MPA PMR and get this! Where can I get a black tspx?is this the same inside the tspx ??
The mpr is still a better rifle, but you pay more also. Not sure where to get one as the last w years have been a zoo
where would you find a replacement bolt or do with the bolt if you get one that is loose or wobbles somewhat?
Call legacy sports international
Imo the Vanguard has a tad better fit and finish and a lighter trigger fit some reason. Oh and the one I have I had to send back and it was deemed messed up and they sent me a new rifle.
It's easy to adjust the Howa 1500 trigger lighter. There's even a really simple mod to lighten it even lower than the adjustment screw allows. From my observations, the cerakoted Vanguard actions felt a little smoother because of the coating. Maybe there was a little more attention to the details but I didn't have a Howa side by side with a Vanguard.
Looking for a bolt action 6mm ARC after watching your video I believe I'm sold of a 1500 Howa
Ive never had a problem with Howa but I just watched a guy on you tube that could not get the bolt to work and could not get a group I will not mention his name but it should be easy to find....as I remember Howa use to or maybe still does make the Weatherby Vanguard and Ive had several of those with zero problem
They still make the vanguard and at one time made sako and weatherby mark v
Can you review or recommned a video for the howa mini 223? Looking hetting the 223 howa mini TSP X chassis.
My 1500 in 6.5 CM shoots sub moa. I'm very happy.
Nice
You didn't mention the bolt handle extension. My bolt knob is machined with the handle. Was there a change or was that done after market?
This was a model they did in like 2019 they no longer do

I don't think you can beat this rifle for 1500 dollars. I have a short full barrel that will shoot a consistent .7 to .5 MOA at a 100 yards and is deadly accurate up to 400 meters. The only rifle I have that will out shoot it is a Ruger model one in 7 Mag .

I am about 95% sold on getting a Howa barreled action. Can you provide any information regarding the free bore? I have heard it is longer than it needs to be, so too much jump that will affect accuracy. But I suppose you can hand load longer than SAAMI.
Idk about any other cartridge but I have the mini action in 223 and it has more jump to the lands with factory ammo than I thought it should. The magazine is longer than the 2.26 inch Sami spec so I’m able to hand load them longer than Sammi spec so it’s not a problem on my mini action. Idk about the others but the magazine clearance might be on their website hope that helps.
Is such rifle after 300 shots risk to buy as used or should I go and get it? Any advice what to watch for before buying used? They are pretty expensive here in Europe, new one Kryptek model 308. with Niko Sterling scope are around 1500$.
If its 300 rounds of handloaded ammo it could be. Or if it was 300 rounds nonstop. Generally though it should not be.
@@Bullets4Bucks No the ammo used was not handloaded and the rifle is couple of years old. I guess it was used occasionally maybe hunting and some training. Need to check. But Kryptek Howa looks awesome with bull barel to be honest. Let's hope it performs the same.
@@Bullets4Bucks Hi there, I havd just tried the Howa 1500 Kryptek...woow what a rifle. With 147gr. Training ammo we made sub MoA at 100 and 150 meters. The bullets went in the same hole and on 150m they were touching each other. Niko Stearling Gameking 16xr44 a cheap scope. The trigger is so smooth and recoil is next to nothing in my opinion due to heavy barrel. We had 30 shots and at 25°C outside temp the barrel was not even warm enough. Ofcourse I bought it for the range shooting and to be honest I almost made mistake and bought Night Train Moosberg. This rifle is excellent piece of craftmanship. 👌
They are known as the Japanese sako for good reason!
My dad has a 80's vintage Weatherby Vanguard 8n 300 win mag that is a pretty good rifle, after addressing the muzzle jump issue with magnaporting. I took one on a trade in 2010 that was almost new, chambered in 243. That was was straight up junk. I couldn't get it to shoot anything. Including reloads. I'm sure some of this was due to it having the absolute WORST trigger I've ever felt. It felt like there was sandpaper on every friction surface in the trigger group. Once you had powered through the ocean of sand and creep, the pull was between 5 and 6 lbs and broke like oatmeal. I recouped my money by selling it, and felt guilty the whole time about putting that thing in anybody else's hands.
@@robertmajors1737 my friend you got bamboozled

The weatherby vanguard is made by howa yes
I know is a 2yr old video. But is that a standard barrel or a heavy barrel. I’m trying to get into precision shooting and the Howa 1500 in 6.5 creedmoor is what I’m looking. I want a heavy barrel but they’re sold out everywhere.
Depends on model... it is a medium heavy I think. It come on models at the time.
What action or rifle is the $1500 to $2000 range would u suggest as a upgrade over Howa 1500s?
With so many custom actions on the market thats a loaded question. I would look at high end kimbers, weatherby mark v and expensive model 70s and sakos. Fierce firearms makes good rifles also. As far as customs i am not going to open that can of worms.
Stick with the Howa get a new stock may be a HACT trigger if yours doesn't have one also look at barrels is yours still shooting accurately how much life does it have left you can upgrade the Howa but make sure you do it properly
Howa 1500 Kryptek 308 comes with HTAC trigger you wont regret. 20"heavy barrel is way to go
I have an ultimate shadow Winchester model 70. I love the rifle. How does howa compare in quality ? I have 2 howa rifles ( 308 and 30-06) and when I go hunting 9 times out of 10 I will grab my howa. Lol.

@Mr. Mcguffin look up brownells video on bolt polishing
Or it might of been midway usa
It makes me feel like this video is like 15 years old because of the And1 shirt.
Lol.. that shirt probably is
Thanks. But its like reviewing a knife and not showing how it cuts........
People sleep on the Howa and spend nearly twice as much on the Remington 700, for essentially identical performance.
Yup
Why does no one mention barrel twist when doing the reviews
It is 1 in 8. But depends on caliber
@@Bullets4Bucks Could you maybe advise me. I am looking to buy a Howa 1500 in 7 mag, but it is only available in 1in10. Another youtuber mentioned that Hornady's manual recommends a 1in9 or faster if you want to shoot above 160gr. I will use the 7mag to shoot shorter ranges in dense areas so would like to be able to do 175 gr. Would the 1in10 twist ratio really limit me to shooting only 150 and 16gr bullets? I cannot think Howa would make a rifle that would limit you that much. 175gr is a pretty popular and readily available factory load.
@@francoisdevries1 You may need to look at the throat too, those heavy bullets are pretty long.
Can you tell me your opinion on Howa HS Precision vs Weatherby Vanguard S2?
Weatherby is 300$ cheaper in Canada, and as far as I can read, are pratically the same as a Howa except for the stock."
Can you give any insight as to why I can justify 300$ more on a Howa HS precision vs a Weatherby Vanguard S2?
Absolutely, the s2 has a cheap synthetic stock with pillar bedding. The barrel is not free floated and the stock flexes. Thing ruger american quality. The Howa HS precision comes with a fiberglass and kevlar reinforced stock. The stock has a full aluminum bedding block. Zero flex and very ridged.
The rifles are identical only the bolt is straight fluted on the Vanguards. No real difference. Both are made by Howa in Japan.
The vanguard stock isn't worth 100 dollars if you ask me. The hs precision is msrp 400 and its worth every penny.
@@Bullets4Bucks looks like I'll be buying an hs precision in the next couple weeks. Luckily my local store has one !
