"The easiest method to sharpen a sword; hard to mess up."
Skall, you underestimate my utter incompetence.
Well, I didn't say *impossible* to mess up, so there is still room for glorious accomplishments of fail. :)
Joking aside, I bet you're too hard on yourself anyway.
진유리 You don't need to sharpen it, you can just end them rightly by throwing pommels.
Lojm Fox news
oops typo
That makes it a throwing knife combo. Vast improvement. End them bestly.
Last time Skall made a list like this Kult of Athena raised the price on all of his recommendations.
Or people started buying them and they had to adjust their pricing based on the demand coming in vs their available inventory.
ghost211323 If they were a hotel running out of rooms, yes, but a merchant usually orders more stock. They're dependent on manufacturers, of course, but a big fish like Athena surely has some clout with them. It's an unusual thing to do, price gauging yourself. Stopped me from buying. Well, that and the shipping oversea.
+Daniel van Slooten ikr 60 euros in the netherlands
its called supply and demand... if deman rises, so do prices
best yes
When you're so poor, that watching a budget sword showcase shatters your dream of owning a functional sword...
Jakub Masalski Just ordered two. But well they are Katanas... So more decorativ pieces to me...
I feel you
Tube98 I’m sure that made him feel better about his poverty and the inability to grab one. Knowing that you had two probably made him feel a lot better about his lack of one. Hahaha
Angron's Stepson Haha, what a dick lmao
Use a wooden stick. It's great fun and you can use it with friends that wear hockey gear.
"Budget Swords"
"200+ US dollars"
*Heart Breaks*
Get a job and save $20 a week for 10 weeks
High end swords are often a grand or more, $200 is very much at the low end of the range for functional battle ready steel.
And then you have to buy a decent scabbard...
@@Almighty_Mage I feel like that is SUPER underrated comment...A good scabbard is essential
The number 1 spot is just under $60
Suddenly reminds me how much mass produces swords go for, when I can easily get a razor sharp falchion from a blacksmith in poland for about 80 euros. Just yeah, mass produced stuff isn't the only way to go, you can find some awesome single person black smiths cranking out some awesome kit.
Link!
I would love a contact number or email of a good knife sword Smith with reasonable pricing.
Please, please give me the contact info for the 80 euro blacksmith. It would be much appreciated 😊
plss man is there websites to buy actual swords that work that ARENT katanas????
How do you use a sword with a fixed pommel? Just throw it pommel-first? I don't understand.
Murder stroke
Thrax Hunter Use the blade grabbing techniques instead!
Red Tamaguchi it's half-swording
Matoro Ah, yes! Thank you, I thought that was, but I wasn't quite sure and didn't want to look incompetent.
Red Tamaguchi You're welcome
Dammit Skall. I'm trying to be a responsible frugal American father and husband. I'm disturbed that my current edged weapons only include a nice Ontario knife company Marine raider bowie and a simple tomahawk. (I'm an American, my weapons mostly go "bang")
Trying to figure a way to justify a sword.
Defense against ogres? Goblins? The undead?
I'll figure it out, probably need to save up for an Albion War Knife.
My Germanic blood calls for it.
Mach Schnell!!
Defense against undead ogrish goblins... Quite essential.

Michael Pauly I like the look of the Albion yeoman. And I feel your comments in my soul.

Zombie Apocalypse!
I bought a Katana from Cold Steel, it only cost 1k (after 50% off) and weighs in at a cool 20 lbs, mostly because of the ornate spikey skull handle.
I literally loled, good job there
Now that is quite a bargain!
+Thomas Middleton Have you tested it on a full grown hog yet? It should split that piggy clean in half.
only if he weighs as much as lynn tompson. the fat stores samurai souls
I spilled my drink, thanks good sir
the cheapest katana can cut any high-end sword in half with the super anime power hidden within
especialy the unsharpend ones
andy897221 Only if it's zombie green.
TheAnonymmynona Katanas can not be unsharpened. It's physically impossible.
and it has to have skulls etched into the blade
It also needs to glow a scary red light.
Thank you the review of affordable, reasonably priced blades for those of us on a severely restricted budget.
My parents got me the Gladuis for Christmas. I'm so glad I showed this to my dad. Thanks for making the video in the first place man!
5:33 my old sword "STING" here take it take it made by the elves you know
...I'm not sure that is a sword Bilbo...
1:43 so basically a starter lvl 1 sword both in looks and result.
And I still can't afford it xD
@@grayKT you can put 10 dollars aside every week and within a few months you’ll have it (assuming you have a steady source of income)
you might look at some of the "combat commander" lines from United cutlery. I personally own the Gladius from them and it was ~30.00 usd and it is nice and sturdy with a very sharp point (the weight of the blade was enough to pierce a soda bottle) the edge is not the sharpest but I've cut 3in wide saplings with no damage. the balance is pretty good. I have used some others from the same line such as the cutlass and tanto and both were very nice weapons as well for way cheaper than they should be.
Dagni ForgeFyre - I’d agree, I have one as well, no problems with mine whatsoever. I’m sure we don’t abuse our examples like skall would, but it would be interesting to get his thoughts on it compared to the Cobra Steel Kindjal or the Conder Cutlass.
CURVED. SWORDS.
Tristan Heath wololo
And it has a really good Damage.
DARKMOON. BLADE.

Hey Skall! There's a pommel arrow mod on Skyrim Nexus...

My question is this, have you done any videos about proper care and sharpening of swords?
ColonelEviscerator i think he did that
ColonelEviscerator I didn't see the link in the descrition like he said he would but I believe there is a video for that.
*****
Except there is no link in the desc.

Wasn't intending to come across that way, but you jumped off the handle so readily I really don't give a fuck how offended you are.
ruclips.net/video/jfD1_gHpraw/видео.html
I did buy a Musashi as an entry level and I do love it. It's not the cheap $50 one but it's not the super expensive either. I have a cousin who's a 5 degree black belt and weapons master and he said that he uses $100 Katana. Obviously skill plays very highly into him being able to wield something like that. But I do know that the modern steels are way better than what the original Katana's were made with so you can go cheaper and don't need a $3000 Katana. But I definitely want an every day home defense type sword. Love your channel +Skallagrim!!!!
Skall, great video, but I have a question...
How much do you want for that magnificent beard?
I must have one of my own.
LocJope well he gave three chickens and a fine cow for it, so theres no telling what it would take for him to part with it
I now imagine you having an environmentally controlled glass display case on a pedestal in the middle of your living room, with nice indirect lighting that adapts to the season and some power metal playing in the background, waiting to be filled with Skalls glorious facial hair.
Personally have a Musashi Iaito, the only annoying part is that I had to use a little fishing hook to get the plastic cover on the blade out of the saya because it got stuck to the inside during shipping. The fit is quite good, no moving parts, 2 pegs rather than the usual cheap sword 1, and the lock to the saya is quite reliably tight.
That intro, every damn time. It's so good.
Skal, serious question: What are your thoughts on Deepeeka?
I ask because I've heard a lot of negative things regarding them, but I received a Deepeeka rapier today as an early Christmas gift (my partner blackmailed Santa) and aside from a few rough areas around the handle that I was able to sand down smooth in a matter of minutes, the sword seems to be a really solid piece. Well balanced, strong construction, durable blade, and a nice leather scabbard to boot.
Do you have an opinion on the company?
5 years later bro. Tell me about it. I am thinking of getting a Roman Gladius form Deepeka.
It would be nice to see an updated version of this video, Skal.
avoid the Hanwei tinker, the nut frequently comes loose and rounds easily. Further if you are using it for HEMA, expect chunks to start getting taken out of your blade leaving dangerous sharp kinks.
Hanwei uses soft 1060 or 1045 steel.
@@J0HN_3_16 1060 is decent for a longsword, you wouldn't really wanna go much higher than that. But 1045 is definitely gonna bend quite easily
6:52 Is that a freakin' Follower Sabre from Dark Souls 3?
Farron Followers struggle with money, i see.
8:56 If you've ever played For Honor you might say that sword is *INCREDIBILIS!*
The honshu spartan seems like a good option. The handle has really nice ergonomics and grip texture, the blade itself wasn't ridiculously long but it still has decent reach and it's overall surprisingly high quality for a budget sword
Yeah, as long as you don't abuse Honshu products, they should be fine.
By abuse I mean wood, or anything harder than that.
Obviously if you bash it against metal or concreate, things will go wrong fast, but that's the same with super high end swords as well, or any knife.
5 worst swords that was over priced for quality?
I generally do my research before buying something, so I don't tend to end up with truly terrible swords. :)
Haven't you been disappointed with quality, a few times? Which I was getting at, maybe I didn't word it the best. Maybe your 5 biggest let downs. Even if overall grand scale of things they might not be the worst of the worst, but they didn't hold up to your expectations.
Dùbhghlas MacDùbhghlas
Occasionally, but I'm not sure I could get 5 together.
No biggie, just a thought.
Better talk about the good ones than the bad ones, those usually already are too much advertised.
3:11 Picked up one of their tinker spare sword blades and I have to agree with you, Skall. They're not bad for the money and they're nice for a bash. The missus wants to put a sword together but she doesn't have the forging experience and everything is currently buried after the move. We're trying one of those so I can put the crossguard and pommel together later while she does the handle from a nice hardwood and leather.
I’m very interested in an update to this for the "battle ready" swords. Maybe "Top 10 Under $300/600/1000." Maybe have different blade lengths and/or "categories," honorable mentions, really good but more than $300/600/1000.
The qualities of the Condor cutlass are due to the fact that, as a modern machete, it is built primarily as tool, it is made to last despite a lost of use.
And from my point of view a kindjal/qama is a long dagger not a sword.
I have the new condor Naval Cutlass. It's my favorite thing ever. Cuts like a beast 💪.
I appreciate your insights. very happy you made a video like this.
I saw your review on the Kindjhal and I must say... SOLD!!! On order as we speak! Thank you...
I love modern "tactical" swords (I really do like synthetic handle material like G10 and the like.) I have the Honshu Dadao which I haven't put through any rough tests but I'm quite happy with it and I really want the Cobra Steel Lakonia from the Cobra Steel line he mentions in the number one slot. I love the short recurved blade style of it. What I typically thing of when I think of a Gladius, but I hate traditional gladius handles so. The cheap modern tactical version of one is awesome to me.
I own the cobra steel sickle sword version and it's got rubber grip scales with a knife like exposed full tang. Thank you for introducing me to the cobra steel line.
The Kindjal feels like the choice blade of bandits, rogues, and cut throats.
Life in the Caucasus has never been a picnic!
Nah man the smallest weapon you get it will make you do double sneak attack damage
im going to watch the video first then write a comment
kingdomfox99 aaaaaand you failed
He successfully failed to fail.
Yellow Mask Dude ... I guess ... ?
BetaKuck nice profile pic
I have a cold steel Lynn Thompson saber with Rey handles I got at the parking lot sale for $95 marked number 2 with a nice leather sheath
Cold steel was sold to a cookie-cutter company and no more parking lot sales 😢I never missed one
The bush saber, as he said was made by condor. They are a known for machetes. I have a few of their machetes. That's how I started cutting. The Sword-machete hybrid is a good place to start. Cold steel has a few but I don't have personal experience with those.
finally budget swords! I've waited 2 years for this
Thanks for understanding how your subs feel about swords! We love them but the money is an issue for many
Thanks for the video Skallagrim. It made finding a Fathers Day present easy.
Has anyone heard of the Smokey Mountain Knife Works. it is a huge store with knives swords camping equipment and a "artifact room" on the lower level. they have regular items that are always available and they have vendor stalls. you have local, and not so local blacksmiths selling knives, swords, axes, and occasionally someone is selling pole arms. I bought a Dao for around $220 from a new vendor. it was pretty good and I have had it for 2 years and I have managed to chop down a Cape Myrtle Tree with it and its still pretty much new however after practicing the forms most mornings for about an hour and occasional test cutting the handle came unwrapped so i had to re wrap it and the blade looks almost brand new there is a little roll from the Cape Myrtle tree through.
#5 is CLEARLY the best because you can end him rightly
Thanks for giving the reviews for us budget-minded reviewers.
Thank you for uploading this I really like the second one.
It’s been 7 years since this video and he’s tested a lot of swords I wonder if he would update this list
Thanx Skallagrim! just made my first purchase from Kult of Athena. picked um a wicked cheap tanto
that 60 frames looks amazing! very professional!
i was thinking about modding my katana with crossguard and maybe pommel to make it superior. :D but... it would make it kind of a tinkering sword so... meh...
Tobias Kilian i really want the highlander katana
The Cold Steel 1796 light cav saber can be found online for just around $200 now too, it`s a decent one for backyard cutting.
Given the time period this vid came out, I'm surprised the Huawei 9260 katana isn't on the list. I got mine for $260CA and it's exceptionally well done for the price.
Appreciate your knowledge it's a big help, thanks!
your intro is so badass, feel like it should be up for longer...goofy thing to say but I just like it
Greetings from Azerbaijan. Khinjal and shamshir is used about 150 years ago in my country.
Condor has a thing with certain weapons ether sabers or Bowles it’s neat to see it.
I have a Bellota machete made in Columbia with a 28 inch blade. It works perfect for me as a sword!
I did some research on the Windlass scimitar/shamshir, and apparently Cold Steel's version actually uses the same blade, from the same manufacturer. Theirs has a better scabbard and fittings--the handle is made from whatever their fancy high-impact plastic is. With a little research, the Cold Steel model can be found for only a little more money than the Windlass version, with all the better stuff.
I recently bought a musashi zatoichi straight sarisaya for 60usd 1045 high carbon steel and I'm very happy with it
Skall you should make a video talking about your top 5 favorite/recommended makers to buy from!
Just wanted to say I thank you for sharing knowledge with us. Because there are so many guys on the internet, comes across as if they are the “Authority” on all things with swords! Can’t stand it! Once again thank you for coming across as , “This is what I believe, ...this...”!
I had a $60 Musha katana. Acid etched hamon, 1045 carbon steel, 3/4 tang. I put a permanent bend in it trying to cut through a green palm husk that was still nearly fully enclosed. All in all, it outperformed my expectations, and even after bending it back, it was still capable of being a competent gut ripper. The shitty pseudo-pommel came undone and needed gluing back in place.
-1/10 pommel inadequate for nuclear fission
Fascinating. I think I might get the Cobra Steel Kopis.
Oooh, wait - Postage to the UK costs more than the item itself, and it'll probably get confiscated.
I have the cobra steel lakonia and i love it.
It would be cool if you did a video like this, but for HEMA training weapons instead of sharps. I realize that's pretty difficult, given the number of different weapon types/trainers out there, but maybe something like "Top Steel Longsword blunt simulators" or "Top nylon arming swords" or something. Thanks for the great content as always- cheers!
I bought a $60 Musashi katana years ago. As swords go it's alright. I haven't used it much, but the fit is good and it keeps an edge.
Smh....
This was an amazingly helpful video.
As a person who would want to own a sword, would I be able to put a grinding belt on a table mounted buffer and use that to sharpen, and would a buffer be a viable way to cosmetically maintain a blade?
You run the risk of ruining the heat treatment with powertools. Requires you to be exceptionally careful and aware of your action,. But it can be done, if you cool the blade often and are mindful of only keeping the sword in contact with the wheel for short periods of time.
Demitrium u can use some wd40 for a quick shine but go with a clear coat car buffer
Demitrium to sharpen use a 270 to 100 grit sandpaper on a belt sander
+Spencer Burkhart I only have a table mounted rotary buffer. It's an old piece of junk my dad left behind.
It work for now
I'm eying up the xiphos and cobra steel, those two in particular are quite beautiful,to me anyway, and you yourself said they are quite well built, especially considering the price, and you are incredibly critical, which means they seem to me to be a good buy. gonna do a bit more research before I buy anything though
personally, I'd have preferred the viking sword by ronin over the Devils edge xiphos. IMO it's a bigger, better sword that is reasonably priced. but like I said, IMO
Try reviewing the Windlass Darksword. It's a functional fantasy design sword that I think would make a fun video! It's fairly cheap and hardly anyone has reviewed it. Keep up the good work!
With regards to cheap plastic handles, I have no problem removing a handle and making my own either with wood or cloth. I've honestly considered buying bare blades and making custom handles, I have the experience.
I bought the Cobra Steel Lakonia.
Fresh out of the box I gave the rubber handle a tug to see how strong it was and pulled it off with my bare hands.
I was planning to put on a new leather handle wrapped in leather cord anyway. I have just finished it and now I'm considering the best way to cover the Cobra logo with my own design.
The new handle has better grip and, because I made it that way, it fits my hand better.
Hm, that might be a lemon. It shouldn't come off so easily. But it's nice that you're happy with the new handle.
Skallagrim
I only have the one Lakonia, but it was fastened only with glue and plastic pins. As I said, I'd planned to change the handle anyways... I was paying for the steel. Your reviews weighed heavily on my decision to buy the Lakonia. You were very accurate regarding the steel. Thanks!
Nice. That's your 3rd top 6 undersold as a top 5.
Good video. Good presentation. Thanks.
Very informative. Thank you.
Nice list.
First sword I ever bought was an M1898 Dutch Naval Cutlass.
The basket hilt and some of the foible were cut off by a Japanese soldier though, and used as a machete.
3:44 reminds me of the Janissary’s Kijil sword from ACR lol
Polish saber is awesome!!!⚔
You actually look like a viking!
From Norway with love :)
That number 5 blunt ver is ideal to start practice with longswords imo.
I think this would make for a good series or yearly video.
I just got the Hanwei tinker longsword the other day. I love it, and plan on customizing the shit out of it
Good list, I prefer the Condor Dadao to the Cutlass but both arte good and affordable
You should check out the CS Gladius machete. I know you aren't a huge fan of CS, but the one I got seems rather well-made for the price.
ahh.. wish they still made the condor bush cutlass. man. i can't find any anymore and the new "naval" variant is double the price.
I got a nice short sword from an antique shop for 20 bucks. Like, it's really sturdy, steel, sharp, and has a decent amount of weight to it, but not too much. It's also got a threaded pommel and the handle is leather. All and all, I had no idea shit got that expensive, I might have gotten a great deal.
Great advice!
The Tinker longswords and bastard swords are out of stock everywhere. Hilt kits and spare blades as well.
I half expected him to take out a kitchen knife at the end and make a sarcastic review of it
Finally someone who pronounces Xiphos correctly
loved this kind of video!
I've seen an add for Windlass Cobra Steel this past month and the entire line of swords were made of stainless steel with a hardness of 48. The link Skall provided still advertises high carbon steel, but just thought I should make you all aware of that.
Hey Skallagrim, you should do the same set of videos for knives if you haven't already.
the devil sword thing look like the stinger, although it is much thinner then the actually stinger. Testing it by chopping wood is fine, but we won't normally chop wood with a battle sword. We could always have a small machete or wood chopping axe as a backup and those 2 items are cheap.
thank you. Ive been looking to find a longsword.
I buy some pretty good quality tactical knives microtech Benchmade Crkt kershaw sog Coldsteel and im a cook as well and I think almost ANY blade is better after a light sharpen even just a grazing polish at least after receiving it.
have the kingal and 2 of the others in the line and I love them.
