Whats the Difference Between 1st 2nd and 3rd Cut Hay? Does It Matter?

    First cut in my area has more seed heads than second cut which gives it a higher fat content. Second cut has more leaves and is higher in protein. We don't usually get a third cutting because the growing season is too short. I know horse owners who feed first cut in cold weather when the animals need the fat and feed second cut in warm weather when they are riding or working their horses.

      This is why regional knowledge is so important! I usually don't see to many seed heads in most cuttings, but it depends on the farm.
